Hopewell Elementary School PTO - Service Learning
A Day of Service
Hopewell Elementary School's 2nd Annual Day of Service will be held on Friday, January 13th.
On Friday, January 13, 2010, HES will begin the day with a Whole School Meeting at 9 a.m. A representative from each grade will give a brief overview of the service project that they will be working on in support of their community partner. Each grade will have a two hour window to work on their service projects. Projects scheduled to take place include:
Kindergarten - Fleece pillows, blankets and valentine cards for Habitat for Humanity's East Trenton Center.
Fourth Grade - Blankets for pediatric cardiac patients at CHOP and New York Presbyterian. In addition they will be writing valentine's to children in the hospitals.
Fifth Grade - Creating a bandana design for The Miracle League. The design would be printed on bandanas and sold at the concession stand during Miracle League games. They will also be creating friendship bracelets to sell at February Fun and other school functions. The proceeds from the bracelets will be donated to The Miracle League.
More projects to come!
Classroom Service Learning Projects
There have been some wonderful service learning projects taking place in our classrooms this fall/winter. Here are some highlights:
PreSchool/PreK and Kindergarden - Our youngest students led the school in a huge collection of Halloween candy for the clients of Habitat for Humanity's East Trent Center. The bags and boxes filled the back of an SUV!
1st grade - With the theme of "Hometown Heroes," our first grade classes have been sending care packages for troops that are stationed in Afghanistan. In the sidebar you will see a picture of Chaplain David Leung Kahler, Captain, United States Air Force, and the father of Isabelle (3rd grade) and Gabriel (1st grade). He is seen opening the care package. To learn more about how these supplies are used for the troops, please read the following article: http://www.manas.afcent.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123278423
3rd grade - The third graders have been learning about the importance of land preservation through their partnership with D&R Greenway. In the sidebar you will see a photo from their hike on the St. Michael's property, located across the street from HES.
5th grade - The fifth graders are busy with fundraising plans for their new partner, The Miracle League. Please see the link to the Miracle League's website for more information about this wonderful organization.
FILL THAT TRUCK!!!
On the third Wednesday of every month, the HES Service Learning Team conducts our monthly "FILL THAT TRUCK!" food drive for the East Trenton Center. Any donations will be very appreciated! Items in need are as follows:
Peanut Butter, Canned Soup, Canned Fruit and Vegetables, Boxed Pasta, Oatmeal, Diapers, Baby Wipes
We will also accept new or gently used clothing and household items. If you would like to donate your truck/van/SUV for a collection and delivery to the ETC, please contact Jennifer Caputo (jencap@gmail.com). On behalf of the ETC, a big THANK YOU to our students and their families for your ongoing support!
