August 26 Update...
Wow! The first two days of school really zoomed by! One thing that was nice this year was not having to spend quite so long on routines & procedures as these kids pretty much know how things run with Mr. Puttmann & me! ;-)
We’ll have a newsletter next week Friday. We’ll start spelling and AR AFTER Labor Day, so no need to worry about those things yet. We DID talk about how the kids might want to get a head start on a chapter book already and everyone had a chance to check out books from our classroom library. Look for some actual homework in math/science/social studies next week.
Remember that you can check homework and spelling lists on this website.
Also, we’ll continue using our Twitter account and would love to have parents follow along at http://www.twitter.com/mrstgskiddos . 5TG spent some time today FINDING some of our followers on our maps in the planner. Two favorites would be Ireland and HAWAII! We were also surprised to see that Iowa’s Director of Education is now following us now, too!
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. T.G. J
Welcome to 5th Grade!
We had a great first day of 5th grade and we're looking forward to a wonderful year!
No School = No Spelling Test!
Because we don't have school on Friday, Nov. 5 (due to parent-teacher conferences), we won't have a spelling test this week either. SO, spend some of that extra time studying your basic math facts instead this week!
Northwestern Play
The third through fifth graders are planning on attending the Northwestern Play on Thursday, September 30. The performance is at 12:00 p.m. and it is on Asian Folk Tales. Make sure to ask your son/daughter about the play.
Become a "Member" of Our Site!
Parents and grandparents may request to become a "member" of this "Small Steps & Giant Leaps" site. Members have access to more of the site's pages and features. Contact Mrs. T.G. if you need help figuring out how to become a member.
Welcome Back!
We had a great first day of school! Ask your 4th or 5th grader to tell you about getting to meet all of their teachers and visit each classroom for a little while.
Also, just so you know, we'll be updating pictures on this site throughout the year. Our first batch of new pictures should be posted this weekend or early next week. Check back often!
DRA Testing Info
We will begin our fall round of the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) September 8. This assessment is an in-depth look at each reader's individual progress. The three areas it measures are reading engagement, oral reading fluency, and comprehension.
Each student will read part of a DRA book out loud to me, answer a few questions right away, and then finish reading the book independently. After reading, the student completes a written summary of the book as well as answering a handful of questions designed to uncover deeper thinking about the text.
The whole process takes two or three days for each student to complete: one 10 minute session with me, and then two or three periods of independent work time during our Reader's Workshop time in class. Working with two, three, or four students a day on this, I hope to complete the testing for all 35 students by the end of September, testing individual students in between whole group, small group, and individual instructional time during our 60 minute workshop time each day.
The results of these assessments will be available for you to view at our fall conferences in early November. If you wish to see results before then, simply email me and I'll be happy to send a photocopy when results are available.
Formative Reading Assessments
I (Mrs. T.G.) have begun working with the fifth graders one-on-one during our Reader's Workshop time. Right now I'm doing some formative assessments with each student ("formative" signifies that these will be used to guide instruction),including a list of 50 sight words for 5th grade and a quick story on Saudi Arabia which the student reads aloud and answers comprehension questions. These two beginning of the year assessments give me a baseline for where each child is at in his/her basic comprehension, reading accuracy, and fluency. After I get through these quick assessments and gain a basic understanding of each student, I will administer a more in-depth assessment called the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). This will really help me hone in on what each student's individual strengths and areas for improvement are. (I will be sharing the results of these assessments during our first parent-teacher conferences in early November.)
First day!
We had a great day in 5th grade! There was a LOT of explaining, but the kids were good listeners and we broke up some of the "talk time" with some "game time"! 5TG also took some pictures--5P will take some tomorrow.
Ask your child about what they enjoyed most about the day!
See you tomorrow!
Small Steps & Giant Leaps is Launched
Welcome! I (Mrs. T.G.) am so excited to get our year off and running with an updated web site. I'm going to try out this shutterfly site for a while this year (mainly because it's FREE and easy to use) until I can afford to update my good 'ole www.mrstg.com the right way--the way I WANT it done (which isn't free). I"m calling this site "Small Steps & Giant Leaps" because I think we take small steps toward learning each and every day and within those steps is the possiblity of giant leaps for the future. I am quite certain that among these students is a future doctor, farmer, teacher, vet, beautician, author, trucker, professional athlete, and lawyer. I am so blessed to get to work with them this year as they take those final steps of elementary school. What a privilege! Please don't ever hesitate to call, email, or stop by if you have questions or comments. I am looking foward to a great year!
-Mrs. T.G.
