Wow! What happened to the month of January? We sure had lots of fun filled activities! In February we are looking forward to celebrating Marcey’s and Randy’s birthdays and welcoming some new friends. With love in the air we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with cookie decorating and of course making some adorable valentine’s to share with our loved ones. The Girl Scouts are going to come for a visit and we sure do enjoy having them here. We also will be going to the Aviation Museum as well as Veteran’s Museum. Every day is a special day here at Ingleside!

 

We are starting out January surrounded by our loved ones and special friends.  We toasted the New Year in and reflected on how blessed we all are. We watched the Rose Parade and admired the beautiful floats.  Many different kinds of seeds and flowers were used to create these spectacular floats.  Amazing!  The Rose Bowl football game was exciting of course, some of us were cheering for the Wisconsin Badgers and others for the Oregon Ducks but the Ducks took it this year 45-38. Go Ducks! This month we are looking forward to celebrating Marie’s and Jane’s birthdays, learning about the Atascadero City Hall and doing some armchair travel to Africa. Lots to look forward to for sure!

Dashing through the Ingleside Holiday Party oh what fun we had, listening to the Cuesta Choir sing the most beautiful holiday songs; our ears were filled with joy! We enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by our wonderful chefs, followed by mouth watering desserts! The conversations were flowing, laughter was shared and lots of hugs were given to all! Oh what fun we had on this special night!

This week we are busy getting ready for Christmas!  We took a ride on the Ingleside sleigh and headed over to pick out our tree. It is beautiful and smells really good! The elves are busy getting the decorations up and it looks so festive. The smells from the kitchen are delicious and our tummies are happy! We even ate some candy canes and sang some Christmas songs!

We extend a great welcome to Linda who will be taking over the Ingleside Activities Program.  

Linda has a background in education and has also worked in the activities department for another assisted living community.  She lives in Paso Robles, loves to take walks with her dog and husband and enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time with her two children.   She is eager to meet you all, and is planning some fun and interesting activities for our community.

A few months ago I stumbled across the concept of Laughter Yoga...basically breathing and laughing.  Studies have shown that laughter can do a lot to improve one’s health, such as: alleviating pain, reducing stress, boosting immune function, aiding in restful sleep, and improving cardiovascular health.   

So we thought we'd try it. I was referred to Caity McCardell, a certified laughter yoga instructor, great “laugher,” and genuinely warm human being.  I knew from the get-go that she would be great for our residents.

Today was our second Ingleside Laughter Yoga Class, and with six residents and two staff members participating, I’d say it was a success!!  Marie, Helen C., Lois, Marcey, Hank, and Don were wonderful participants! 

Helen is still convinced that the best part of the class is watching Caity laugh.  “She has a great way of laughing,” she has repeatedly told me.

And Marie really enjoyed that two of the men participated in our group and seemed to really enjoy themselves.  She said, “I liked watching the men laugh.  It was nice.”

As for me, I think it is amazing that with the right energy, a little encouragement, and a safe environment, our residents had so much fun and really let the laughs flow.  They respond really well to Caity.  So much fun!  Can't wait to have her back!

Arthur Benny, affectionately known to us as "Art," entered into rest February 11, 2011 after a year and a half as a member of our Ingleside family.  He will be greatly missed.  A true gentleman, in every sense of the word, Art will be remembered for his spontaneous dancing, his sense of style, and his inherent way of making people smile.  Our thoughts are with his family at this time. Goodnight Art. We will miss you.

Today it was blustery out, so we bundled up and headed to Morro Bay for some sightseeing.  With all the rain, everything is so green.  All the regulars went along...Ralph, Don, Jim, and Betty... plus Marcey and our new resident Lois.  The highlight was bringing Skyla with us (our Ingleside dog)!  We saw boats and barns and even stopped to get oranges!  How fun!

Marie and Betty made a shopping trip to the Goodwill Store on Tuesday.  Marie found some pretty tops, and we went for lunch afterward.  Mmmm...In-N-Out Burger!  We wrapped up with a scenic drive and found some furry friends...check out the pics!

We celebrated two birthdays this past week. Helen and Ralph. Most of our residents really enjoyed the celebrations with balloons, music, cake and icecream and lots of fun!   

We have gone on some wonderful outings in the new bus. Our first trip was to Morro Bay to see the rock and enjoy a wonderful lunch. We have also visited Avila Beach, the butterflies at Pismo and the Pismo Pier. We have enjoyed some lovely scenic drives including Orcutt Rd, Highway 1 along the coast, and Santa Margarita Lake.  

Another exciting trip included the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo for lunch. Yummy and lots of fun.

These past weeks we headed to Paso and attended an Art and Jewelry show and the Horse cutting show at the Fair grounds. 

Our next adventure will be to the "Gardens at Avila" for lunch.  

We are enjoying some lovely outings in our new Ingleside bus. This week we drove to Avila and enjoyed lunch while viewing the beach and awesome waves. We enjoyed a scenic drive home through Edna Valley and enjoyed the beautiful green of the hills and the many grapes growing in the area.  Last week we drive to Morro Bay and ate lunch at a local resturant overlooking the bay and Morro Rock.  

In the evening when everything has quieted down the residents enjoy a good book read by caregiver Dani.

Today Ruth, Art, and Eilleen joined me in a visit to the Atascadero Public Library. We checked out quite a good variety of books and also a couple movies to watch over the weekend.

We are loving watching the leaves change. Yesterday we took a scenic drive up to Paso Robles, and got to see many beautiful and brightly colored trees.

Today we will be going over to the Flying Dutchman in Morro Bay for lunch. Delicous fish and chips.

Today Ingleside would like to wish Art a very Happy Birthday! Hope it is a great year!

Yesterday Eilleen, Art, Pam, Al, Ruth and Hank visited the River "k" pumpkin patch in Paso Robles. We picked out pumpkins to carve, and corn and squash to decorate with. We had never seen so many pumpkins of different shapes, sizes and colors. After exploring the patch and corn maze we sat down at the picnic tables for lunch. The weather was beautiful too.

We would like to welcome Chris and his dog Baby Girl to Ingleside.

Since it has now gotten colder and rainy we have changed our weekly Farmer's Market trip to a Starbucks Coffee trip the last couple of weeks. Who doesn't love a warm cup of coffee or tea on a cold day. Many of the residents really look forward to our coffee shop outings.

Yesterday Ruth, Eilleen, Pam and I went to the San Miguel Mission. We took the self guided tour and even got a sneak preview of the newly restored church. It turned out very beautiful!

Last Thursday we visited the Paso Robles Pioneer Museum. Eilleen, Ginny, Pam, and Art all really enjoyed stepping back in time. The museum was filled with special things that reminded everyone of childhood and growing up. The displays even included a large selection of old cars and horse buggies.

Today Ginny, Jenny, Marcey, Pam, Virginia, Marie, Eilleen, Art, and Hank rode the train from Paso Robles to San Luis Obispo. It was a beautiful, scenic ride with views off the side of mountains, Cal Poly, The prison and quite a few ranches filled with animals. Everyone had a wonderful time and want to do it again.

Yesterday we took a trip down to Avila Valley Barn. We had a picnic lunch, browsed the store, ate sorbet, and fed the animals.

Wednesday we went to Farmer's Market and listened to music. Today we ventured down to Arroyo Grande for a picnic at a great little park and to the movies. Jenny, Art, Marie, Ginny, and Pam enjoyed watching Julie and Julia the movie.

Ingleside would love to welcome our new resident Arthur. We look forward to spending time with him and getting to know him.

On Wednesday evening we had a lovely time at the Templeton concerts in the park. We listened to big band music being played while watching swing dancers, a perfect after dinner event. On Thursday Eilleen, Ginny, Jenny, Hank, Virginia, Pam, and Marcey had lunch at Player's here in Atascadero, an Italian restaurant. Tomorrow we are looking forward to visiting the Paso Robles annual olive festival. It has been a fun week with more to come!

Yesterday we had a visit to Miner's Hardware to pick up some flowers, so today we planted them. We planted everything from small pots to big pots and hanging baskets too. They all sure did turn out beautiful! The residents loved their gardening day.

The ladies (Jenny, Ginny, Pam, Marcey and Eilleen) joined me on a trip over to the coast today. Our first stop was Morro Bay for lunch by the beach, from there we took a scenic drive up highway 1 to San Simeon. We drove past Hearst Castle and stopped off at the elephant seals. Marcey said " those are the biggest animals I have ever seen in person." It was a very fun afternoon!

We had such a blast at the California Mid-State Fair! We went yesterday at 10am for senior day. The residents enjoyed walking around viewing all the booths, visiting the live stock barns, and of course a corn dog!

The California Mid State Fair is here! We are so excited to be going on Tuesday the 28th for senior day at the fair. Also today we will be visiting the Farmer's Market and tomorrow going on an outing to Paso Robles Pioneer Museum. This morning the resident's got to decorate hand bags as a craft.

Hank, Jenny, Ginny, Pam, Marie and Marcey went out to Coldstone Creamery for ice cream after lunch today. Perfect on a hot day like today.

Today we would like to wish Hank a very Happy Birthday! We are going bowling and out for pizza to celebrate.

Today we made and decorated new door hangers for a craft. Eilleen made a flower, as did Jenny and Pam decorated a turtle. Danielle helped and made a special one for Jane as well. All of them turned out very cute! Also today we will be visiting the local farmer's market, we will sample all sorts of fruits, vegetables and even wine if we want to. then take a seat in the shade and listen to a local band play.

Wow, a busy and fun week! Filled with lots of crafts, events and activities at the facility. Including Jan playing the harp on friday for happy hour. The residents really enjoyed it. Also we had our weekly outings to the Atascadero Farmer's market and the library. While at the Farmer's Market the residents got to listen to a local band play and Jenny even got up and danced. On Thursday, Pam, Eileen, Jim, Marcey, Jenny, Hank and Marie had a big day. First stop the Pismo Dunes. We drove out onto the sand, unloaded a big picnic lunch and everyone ate while listening and watching the waves crashing in front of them. Picture perfect. Second stop the Avila Pier. We sat on the pier and watched the biggest sea lion any of us had ever seen sun bathe and swim around. And man was he loud! It was a wonderful day and everyone had a blast! Can't wait for next week, it's gonna be a fun one as well!

Hank and Eilleen enjoyed an outing to the library to choose some books and DVD's. They both really enjoyed it and we watched one of the DVD's last night. 

Yesterday Eilleen and Ginny made some geat smelling candles.  

Eilleen and Shirley played scrabble last night and Eilleen won again! She is truly amazing with scores sometimes in the 300's. She has won the last 5 out of 6 games.  

We had fun today with indoor Volley Ball in the big room. It was very competitive! 

Later in the day we made clay wind chimes that will be painted and fired next week.

 

We grieve with the Graham family over the loss of Reggie. He was such a treausre and brought great joy and laughter with him and is greatly missed by us all. He reminded us every day how important it was to make someone smile. We still smile whenever we think of you Reggie and we miss you very much.  

Ginny has joined us at Ingleside. She enjoys the company and good food and activities and is a pleaure to have. Tonight it was a very close scrabble game between Giiny, Eilleen and Shirley with Henry helping withour spelling now and then as required!   

Dave Malloy came today and sang some wonderful songs we all enjoyed  

On Sunday February 1 Henry moved to Ingleside. He is a History teacher and comes with lots of interesting experiences. Eilleen is a teacher also so they have some very interesting discussions on their teaching experiences.

One of our residents, Eilleen, got the pleasure of going to farmers market with Shirley today. They brought back beautiful roses that were arranged in a beautiful manner and placed in each of our residents' rooms.

We made door hangers as one of our crafts. Eilleen made one that said, "knock first". Jamie (our caregiver) helped out with this. Jen (another one of our caregivers) helped our residents make pin cushions. On Sunday night we played Scrabble, enlarging our vocabulary.

We made Valentine's Day cards today. Eilleen made one for Reggie and Reggie made some for his family. Our residents enjoyed creating and decorating the cards. We also had some tea and snacks as a group together.

This afternoon we made bird feeders from peanut butter and bird seed. This got our fingers sticky. Travis and Ielleen hung the feeders in the garden Once we had washed our hands, we went for a walk in the garden to see our newly-created bird feeders.

We had 2 guitarists (Jennifer - our caregiver's - brother and boyfriend) play for about 2 hours today. Caregivers and residents alike enjoyed their playing. We would welcome them to come and play for us any time in the future.
