Welcome - How to Join

Welcome to this share site for the fledgling Irish Society of Botanical Artists! Here we can post photos of our work, links to our individual websites, and create a forum for discussion using a message board.

If you are a botanical artist active in Ireland, you can join in by following the instructions under the SIGN UP button on the menu or by emailing marie.stamp@hotmail.com if you have any difficulty.

We are using this website (as a supplement to email) as a way of sharing information for the time being. It's free and has photo-sharing, comments, newsletter and email functions, as well as a message board, a calendar and the opportunity to link to your own website if you have one. There's no spam, and no security issues, but shutterfly will occasionally send you marketing emails, so be forewarned.

We look forward to meeting you!

How to use this website - Please Read

Hello friends,

it looks like most people have been able to figure out this website, but a little birdie tells me one or two people haven't.

Not everyone likes figuring out computer stuff on their own - so I'm here to help. It won't happen magically if you do nothing, so please get in touch with me by email at marie.stamp@hotmail.com and I will help you sort out any difficulty you have.

I've prepared a few notes for you below, which may be enough, but if not.... don't be shy!

1. What this site is for:

This site is a communications tool for members and that's about it. It has a lot of functions on it and it's free, secure, and doesn't require a webmaster, but at the same time it not a web presence, and is not a substitute for a proper marketing tool

As a communications/publishing tool just for ourselves, it provides a weekly newsletter, photo storage, a calendar, links to our own websites, and a message board. These functions do not normally come with free website software, so this is why we are using this website for now.

This site is more secure and private than other kinds of tools such as twitter and facebook. It is more secure than WordPress or blogs, therefore eliminating spam and the need for anti-virus patches etc.

Of course, we can email each other directly rather than use this site, however this site does not display our email addresses -making it more private - and it also archives our messages so we can always refer back to them, and new members can read back over any information or discussions they missed out on.

2. Who can use the website

EVERYONE WHO SIGNS IN can use every function on this site - photos, calendar of events, message board... Anyone who has the website address can send a request to join the site. I can control who joins the site, but so far I have not seen a reason to refuse anyone who has asked!

Nothing that you enter on the website will be posted unless you sign in.

3. How to sign in

You have to sign in with the user name (most likely your email address) and password that you used when joining the site. If you forgot your password, click on that and the system will send you a prompt to re-set it.

If it does not recognise you at all, then you have not signed up yet. If this is the case, you can follow the onscreen instructions for doing so (the Sign Up) button from the menu. If you are used to using the internet, this will be quite intuitive to you. When the system asks you for a password, you just make up your own password specific for this site.

If you are less technically-minded and have nobody else to help you, I can sign you up and give you a password which of course you are free to change afterwards.

4. Adding content

  • Adding photos:All members of this website can upload photos. This function works just like Picasa Web and other online photo storage services. If you have done this before, you will see the same prompt structure for adding albums or if you want to add photos to an existing album (there is already an album for Yanny for example) you select that. You can then select to upload photos from your computer. Photos will appear on the website momentarily.
  • Adding comments to the message board: Click on message board, and underneath the comment you want to reply to, select reply and a dialogue box comes up for you to enter your text. Remember that if you have not signed in, your comment won't come up. Note that comments will appear in real time on the website and will be emailed to everyone.
  • Adding news and calendar items: Click on the heading and follow the prompts for adding text. You have to have signed in for your text to appear. For these functions I have left the settings at a weekly mailing because otherwise there might be too much stuff in our inboxes.

I hope this helps, and that you will let me know how you get on.

Head Band Handsfree Magnifier

After seeing Susan Sex's headband magnifier when we met at the Botanic Gardens on 8 September, I bought the Optivisor DA-5, made by the Donegan Optical Company – 2.5x magnification at 8 inches. If you get a higher magnification, you have to be closer than 8 inches, and if you get a lower magnification, you can be further away. For instance, 2x magnification requires a distance of 10 inches. The good thing with the Optivisor (which, I think, is exactly the same as Susan's) is that you can buy other lenses for it, so if the 2.5 didn't suit, you could get replacement lenses of 2x, or whatever. Also the lenses are glass, not plastic, so they are much clearer and sharper. I bought mine from 'Polish It' a seller through Amazon UK, and it cost £49.95 sterling, but there are several Amazon sellers to choose from. It's not as heavy as I thought it might be, and very easy to adjust so that it fits well. It will be a great help when working on fine details.

Steering Committee to meet in October

For those who were able to attend on the 8th of September, our first painting outing and masterclass with Susan Sex was a very enjoyable event. We are looking forward to more events that bring artists together at the National Botanic Gardens and elsewhere. Perhaps you would like to organise an event, or contribute to the development of our group in some way?

Right now we have a core group of 5 volunteers who will meet back in the Gardens on 23 October to spend some time working on how to establish our association. Between now and then, you might like to get the discussion going by contributing to the message board here on this website. Remember you cannot interact with this website unless you sign in! If someone wants to be a member of the site they just have to send a request to join (from the home page).

The 5 members of our "steering committee" are:
Shevaun Doherty
Oonagh Phillips
Holly Somerville
Marie Stamp
Lynn Stringer

Your feedback is welcome and appreciated, as are offers of support, and recommendations for additional members.

Happy painting!

A share site just for us!

Welcome, botanic artists of Ireland! This is a closed, secure website, open only to members who have been invited. It's a free and easy way to share news, photos, links and messages among the members of our group. I've been using it for years.

My suggestion is that we keep it going for a year and see what people think of it, and if we find it useful or not, and if someone else wants to take it on.

If you want to order prints or other photography products using this website (cards, calendars etc.) you might find a few marketing messages from Shutterfly in your inbox. If you are not interested, just delete them.
