2012 Gaels Got Talent Competition - a St. Patricks Day Fundraising Event
GGT, the competition, is targeted at non professional artists. There are two categories - group and individual. Winner from each category gets to play on stage at the 2012 St Patrick's Day event. For musician or group starting out its a great opportunity to play in front of such a big crowd - they can utube it, promote themselves with it, put it on their website, encourage promoters to come and see them in action etc. The idea is to get a different cross section of the community interested in attending St Pats day in the park - encourage all ages to get involved and as the professional talent on the stage elevates year on year build the GGT competition into a sought after event.
Last year we had 22 entrants. Some excellent talent. Best group went to Castlecomer and best individual went to David Wilson. As you know 2011 was cancelled and these artists didn't get to perform - we have arranged for them to perform next year and be part of the 2012 celebrations.
This year we will beholding auditions on Saturday 4th February 2012 at the Gaelic Club onDevonshire St where the top 10 acts from the auditions will go through theFinal. The Final on Saturday 3rd March 2012 at the Penrith Gaels. TheFinals night will be held as a fundraiser for the St. Patrick’s Parade andFamily Day Committee with donations being taken at the door, raffles and lotsmore!
The Committee haverecruited three judges who are familiar with the music industry and areinterested in hearing new, fresh acts and passionate about giving amateurartists the opportunity to showcase their talent. Again this year there willnot be any charge contestants to enter.
Contestants can register their interest or enter by logging on to our website www.stpatricksday.org.auand completing the entry form. If you have any questions or comments please donot hesitate to contact me on this address or on 0410 998 344.

Siúl 2010 Coogee go Bondi
Join a social walk as Gaeilge (in Irish) along the coastline from Coogee beach to Bondi beach on the October long weekend, Sunday 3rd,with members of the Irish Language School Sydney.
Come on this scenic walk with us, and speak, or hear, a bit of Irish along the way.
The walk starts at 10 am from the steps of the Coogee beach swimming pool, on the right hand side of the beach as you look out to sea.
Along the route a stop will be made at the magnificent 1798 Irish memorial at Waverley, and a short talk about its history will be given. This memorial is a must for anybody interested in Irish history.
The walk finishes at 12.30 pm at Bondi where you can enjoy lunch and maybe take your first swim of the season.

Guys
Thoroughly enjoyed the inaugural first brekkie last week – what a fantastic idea of yours to get this up and running. Having lived in Sydney since ’95 I have now found all my initial Irish friends and comrades have returned back to the Emerald Isle. The last number of years have been particularly more isolating, as I gave up my work when our two “high maintenance toddlers” arrived, It has not been easy having no immediate family network close by. So guys, hearing about the Irish Brekkie Club could not have come at a better time for me here!
Usually the idea of sitting down for a casual get-together with a group of strangers would not be my “cup to tea” but I had a lot of fun and enjoyed getting to know you all a little. Meeting people from your homeland does provide a certain “connection” that immediately allows for an instant understanding of your culture, background, sharing of mutual jokes … not to mention an appreciation of “bacon and cabbage” …
I look forward to upcoming brekkies and am very flexible with future ideas for get togethers. Thanks again. Gladys

Hi there!
**Welcome to the home of the Irish Brekkie Club – as featured on 2FM and RTE radio one**
Who are we?
The Irish Brekkie Club is a non profit, monthly social gathering of barry's-lovin', soda bread-eatin' Irish lads and lassies who've gained their aussie permanent residency and/or are in the process of settling for the long haul in Australia.
Are there any criteria for becoming an Irish brekkie clubber?
As mentioned above, the club is for Irish folk: those who were born and raised in Ireland and moved to Australia in their 20s – 50s. They've gained their aussie permanent residency and/or are in the process of settling for the long haul in Australia. Sense of humour and general social skills also beneficial.
What's the aim?
To bring Irish who are in the same boat together for a regular dose of craic, good food and a regular fix - just a dash - of 'home'. Best case scenario is you make a few new buddies who understand what you're saying at normal Irish speed of 90 miles an hour. We mix it up a bit throughout the year with gatherings for friends and family too.
Are we saying that all things Irish are just a bit better?
Crisps, yes. Weather, no. And when it comes to the rugby, it's head to toe in green all the way. Truth be told, there's loads to love about Irish life (old friends and family usually top the list) and there's loads to love about Aussie life. Living in Australia offers us the fantastic opportunity to meet, live, work, laugh and learn with others from a multitude of backgrounds and cultures. The warmth of the people, the food, the music, more festivals than you can shake a stick at, nevermind the sunshine; there's always something happening to expand the mind and nourish the soul! The Brekkie Club exists so Irish folk, who don't usually stumble upon other fellow-folk from Ireland through work or play, get the opportunity to meet up with others in the same boat. For a few hours once a month we get together, share stories and have a bit of craic (without having to slow down or explain the lingo!) - preferably out in the sunshine, over that quintessential aussie institution; the big brekkie. To sum it up: we're all about appreciating the best of both worlds.
What's the general demographic?
Age-wise, the majority would be early to late 30s, but we still have loads who join up and come along who are in their late twenties, forties plus a few fifty-pluses too. Otherwise, it's both lads and lassies, partnered and single, north and south, have kids / no kids, straight and gay...the list goes on. A few things common to all: the love of a bit of banter, partiality to a laugh, interest in both Australian and Irish culture – and of course a decent cuppa.
Is it always the same crowd?
Usually 50/50, regulars/newbies.
Where do we meet?
We mix it up throughout the year to keep us all interested; outdoor brekkie bbqs, cyo (create your own) local brekkies and the odd thirsty night too.
How can you join the club and stay in the loop?
But what if you're just not into the whole 'Irish scene'?
Whether you live for Guinness, can't play Gaelic to save your life, or prefer just a dash of diddleedee in your life – this is the best place to meet a diverse bunch of others. Perhaps like you, they've arrived fresh off the boat or just feel a bit homesick. Others have been here a good while – having said goodbye to many a friend over the years returning to the Emerald Isle.
When's the next brekkie?
Check out the club's calendar on left for the upcoming gathering or go to 'About Us' to hear more about the story behind the birth of the club.
"Sounds great! Maybe I'll make a few business contacts...or what about a promo opportunity..."
The brekkies are about personal friendship pure and simple. If professional networking and making business contacts is more your cuppa tea, the Lansdowne Club do a fantastic job with events throughout the year. Re: promotional opportunities – the IBC's annual raffle gives relevant brands/businesses the opportunity to donate prizes and win potential punters over!

Sat, 30th October – Hallowe'en night
Hi folks,
There's been some talk of late that we should have a few drinks to mix it up a bit. So this month we're switching from rashers to rum and heading to an 'Irish Hallowe'en Night' at Randwick Rugby Club, Coogee on Sat 30th Oct. Entertaining on the night will be Green Jam – a crackin' band who play everything from U2 to Crowded House and Van Morrison. Fancy dress is optional, but there will be prizes for best male/female costume! Cocktail food provided too. Tickets are $30.
Another great reason to come along is because the night is in aid of Ailish and Davina's 800km Bike Ride for children's charity
"Hands Across the Water". The pair of brekkie clubbers have organised the whole evening as one of their many efforts to raise the mammoth amount of $10,000 each. They'll deliver all the money they raise at the end of their cycle to children in Kao Lak, Thailand, who were orphaned by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. So let's hit the tiles and help them on their way! Hope to see you there (and remember – if you've yet to come along to the brekkies or don't really know anyone yet, never fear – just drop us a line...there are plenty of newbies every month)!
A limited number of tickets available online, so nab yours quick!:

An Aussie friend told me today that the WEA in Sydney city is running a course from Feb to March called: Ireland – Celtic to Christian: 700 BC to 700 AD. (I took the hint as had previously displayed my terrible memory/ignorance when asked about the Celts). More info here.

Hope you've all had a fantastic Christmas. Folk have been asking about the next brekkie...so FYI: we're gonna have the next gathering in February. With Christmas/NY lots of folk are still back in the emerald isle plus Dee and I are happy to have a wee break to recharge our organisational batteries. Keep your eyes out for the Feb details in your inbox and looking forward to seeing you all then!
Happy Chrimbo and 2010
Hi everybody. Brekkie on the Boat on Saturday was great fun – thanks to all who came along. Without you lads, Dee and Sinéad would still be sitting in a café somewhere, slurping tea and wondering where all the other Irish permanent residents are hiding in Sydney. Happy Christmas and here's to a fantastic 2010 for all brekkie clubbers & their friends and families. See you all next year for more monthly doses of rashers and craic.
P.S: Thanks again to Jason O'Sullivan for the Wolfe Tones tickets (and to Adrian, who won the tickets, for enlightening us with one of their songs on the boat) and Eamon Eastwood for the Taste Ireland voucher. Much appreciated! And to all you rockin' brekkie clubbers for the fantastic pressies.

Thanks to all for making the bbq brekkie great. Fantastic bunch of folk, great weather, delicious food, some impressive batting/throwing. What more could you ask for.
Thanks so much for all the scrumptious food you brought to share. Think it's fair to say that it was a fine spread of both food and folk.
December brekkie in the works, so keep your eyes peeled for the details in the next few weeks.
See you all soon, and feel free to spread the word to your Irish friends.

Emigration from Ireland is exceeding immigration...

...for the first time since the mid-1990s. Of the 65,100, however, who emigrated in the year to April 2009 (in comparison to 57,300 immigrants) – only roughly a quarter were Irish citizens. Are most coming to Australia? Recent stats have shown that the Australian Government has issued 22,788 visas to Irish citizens for the year to June 2009 – up by 33% from 17,120 in the year to June 2008.
Some interesting points on the issue of emigration here in yesterday's Irish Times article, by Ruadhán Mac Cormaic.

We are delighted to support a new Club forming in Sydney - The Irish Brekkie Club! - brekkies for Irish lads and lassies living in Sydney. As heard on 2FM's Gerry Ryan show and RTE Radio One's Tubridy show! The gatherings are for permanent residents or those in the process of putting the roots down.
The clubs goal is to connect as many as possible who are in the same boat – at a different Sydney café each month – for relaxed chats 'n laughs over brekkie 'n' barry's (if we can smuggle it in). Sep brekkie full to the brim, but Oct brekkie date to be announced soon! Essential to book. **Sep brekkie booked out**
Hi guys,
All last 5 spots have been taken, so to all others: we're really looking forward to meeting you at the October brekkie. As mentioned yesterday, we hadn't expected such a big response from emailers and facebookers – so we're sorry we maxed out so soon due to space. Alas, never fear – the October venue will be large enough to comfortably accommodate a larger group. Watch this space for an update on the deets.
Sinéad :)
**Only 5 spots left**
***ONLY 5 SPOTS LEFT, as of 9.30pm, Sun 6/9/2009 ***
-------------
Hi brekkiers,
Hope everyone's had a splendid weekend! Re: the Sep brekkie: due to an overwhelming response from people – through both direct email and the facebook group page – we're almost at max capacity for September's brekkie. .
We have 5 spots left, so if you'd like to come along on the 19th, please post a comment on the Wall of the Sep '09 invite facebook group page (**please don't click 'accept' to the invite as we'll be unable to track the final 5 spots**) or email us directly: irishbrekkieclub@gmail.com First in best dressed!
Big apologies guys, but the response has been a little unprecedented – and absaloutely fantastic at the same time. Rest assured the October brekkie will be at a location big enough for the whole crew. We're already onto the case – and really looking forward to it
Talk soon!
Sinéad :)

Aussies n wee ones too?
Hi brekkiers, A few folk have asked Dee and I about bringing kids 'n aussie partners along to the brekkies. For now, the brekkies are especially for the grown up paddies and paddiettes among us. We'll prob run a 'bring an aussie' brekkie, as it'd be great to meet your other halves or friends at some stage too – but we wanna meet you first! We've also suggested to a few parents in the group about organising a Parents & Bubs brekkie. From what we can tell, there aren't many regular daytime gatherings like this in Sydney for Irish from all kinds of backgrounds (unless you're big into GAA or set dancing and then you're flyin'). Many of us have good aussie friends – but we want to give ourselves the opportunity, for a couple of hrs a month, to meet other Irish in the same boat (ie settled or thinking of settling) where otherwise we may not get the chance to. The idea is to kick back, enjoy the food, craic and company – and talk in our foreign-speak as much or as fast as we fancy! See you at Poppy's on the 19th! Sinéad :)
Support for Sharon Commins: still in captivity, hopes for release v. soon
On 3rd July, Sharon Commins (32) from Clontarf in Dublin was kidnapped – along with a co-worker Hilda Kawuki (42) – from the GOAL compound in North Darfur, Sudan. The Irish Times has been publishing updates on the kidnapping ever since. Here's the latest, which sounds pretty positive:
Anyone who wishes to offer words of support can head to the facebook page 'Freedom for Sharon'. Having been in Sharon's year in secondary school myself, I can only imagine what her close friends and family in Dublin are feeling at the moment.
On behalf of the Irish Brekkie Club here in Sydney – Sharon, we hope that both you and Hilda are doing well and look forward to hearing good news of your release very soon. Sending lots of love and warm hugs your way.
As heard on 2FM and RTE radio one!
Hi everyone.
You may have heard we've been waxing lyrical over the airwaves. If you missed it, you can download our two interviews from the last 2 days on Irish national radio on the links below. Was a fantastic opportunity to spread the word! Think I managed to get the hang of my 'normal' accent by the time Tubridy called ;)

Thunderbirds are go.
A BIG thank you to everyone who came along to the inaugural Irish Brekkie Club brekkie this morning – especially those of you who braved the great unknown and arrived solo. Congrats on your lucky dips by the way! Dang it, I had my eye on that Walnut Whip. Time flew and before we knew it, over 2 hours had past – conversation and tea was still aflowin' – and we were yet to settle the bill. Now that's what I call an Irish get-together.
Chalk down the date for September's feed – Sat the 19th. Café to be confirmed. Sign up and ask to be added as a member to receive a weekly or monthly update (whichever you prefer). Remember that as a member, you can view, comment, email any/all other members and contribute to the website with anything from youtube videos or recipe ideas to an ad for a babysitter or an idea for an IBC event. The possibilities are endless – go make it your own!
