Serata #8, Final Class Recap, Notes & Festa – 15 luglio 2009
Una serata eccellente! We studied the Italian version of the menu for Ristorante Joe’s and practiced words and phrases for ordering food. Finally, ready and armed with the right words (and very hungry) we all marched up the street to Joe’s for the real deal – ordering in Italiano.
Good food, good fun, and lots of photos! I’ve just posted them in a new album on the website – haven’t done weeding out yet, so if there are any you absolutely can’t stand, let me know! Know also that you can order prints directly thru the site from Shutterfly. And if you were to go to the www.shutterfly.com website and sign up for a new account, they may still be offering 25 free prints as a sign-up bonus.
We also decided on next Friday, July 24th, at 8pm, as our nite to go to see the play “I Take This Man” at the Patio Playhouse in Escondido. Our own Sabato designed the sets for this very funny play that has received good reviews from the North County Times. Tickets can be bought in advance. Reservations: 760-7466669 or www.patioplayhouse.com . Please confirm with me that you plan to come. I’ll be in touch between now and then to coordinate a meet up point prior to the play.
A presto!

Serata #7 -- Recap & Class notes – 8 luglio 2009
We started out reviewing ‘cibo e gastronomia’ using our homework food collages as a basis for conversing about likes, dislikes, and preferences. Nice work on the collages – bravi!
We then began on conversations and questions to talk about vacations, ‘le ferie.’
We worked some more on Mina’s song “Mille Bolle Blu” practicing pronunciation, meaning, and doing a fill-in-the-blank activity. Congratulations to all on your bubble-blowing prowess – new pictures are on the website!
Our final class of the series is this next Wednesday – please arrive on time (7:15) as we will be going to Joe’s Italian restaurant for the final portion of class and have much to do in our final serata.
Homework: Study the Italian menu and decide what you will order at Joe’s.

A note on “Geografia & Storia” on the website:
Complimenti to Giorgio, Barbara, Stefano, and Chiara who have already added their region info to the website. After everyone has added their info, as a class project, I can compile all entries and print a copy for everyone. We’ll have our own in-house guide to Italy!

Serata #3 -- Recap & Class notes -- 10 giugno 2009
Buon giorno! Our third class saw us doing a review quiz on greetings//small-talk/getting-to-know-you conversational phrases studied so far. Good work on the ‘scripts’ you wrote and presented to the class!
We also learned a new greeting conversation, including the very important phrase ‘Ho bisogno di una vacanza!
Next we translated “Gloria” – which was a living lesson in poetic license! Is it a love song or a political/idealogical commentary? Boh! Unless we come up with a way to contact Umberto Tozzi, we’ll never know!
The playlist for the music compilation “Italiano with Jodina, CD2” is below.
Compiti di classe (Homework):
Group the nouns from the song Gloria into 2 columns: masculine and feminine. If in doubt about any word, check it with the online dictionary … link on the home page of this site.
And just for the fun of it, I’ve added a link to Laura Branigan’s English version of “Gloria” on YouTube. Enjoy!

Sicily - Sicilia . . . The largest mediterranean island, was the world's first multicultural society. The first inhabitants were Elymi, Sicani and Siculi, then the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greek, Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Goths, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and British.
The city of Agrigento in Sicilia is full of archeologial wonders. Within the ancient Greek city is the valley of the temples, with the Temple of Concordia (goddess of harmony), Temple of Zeus (god of sky & thunder), and others some dating back to 5th Century BC.
Sicilian is actual considered to be a distinct, separate language from Italian, not just an Italian dialect and both are based on the everyday speech of ancient Rome.

La Isola di Sardegna, frequently referred to as Italy's Hawaii, is well known for it's beautiful aqua blue and emerald green waters, it's natural habitat and it tourism industry. While all the coast line is beautiful, the Costa Smeralda is most known to the wealthy and well known, with American celebraties such as Bruce Willis and Tom Cruise and family visiting the area in recent years.
Aside from the beaches, much of the terrain is mountainous and rocky, with granite being plentiful. Wrought iron furniture such as table and wine rack, with granite tops, are very popular in the region. Many of the inland residents are sheep and goat herders and pechorino cheese (made from sheep's milk) is a local favorite.
Also inland, over 7000 nuraghi (cylindrical rock huts) can be found. They range from very simple one room mounds to elaborate multi room buildings. These are the homes of the native people in the region and many can be toured.
Cork is another staple in the local economy, and is used not only in the bottling of wine, but also used for products such as purses, shoes, photo album covers, serving trays, and decorations.
Sardegna is a beautiful island with many fun traditions and if you have the opportunity to see it !I would highly recommend it.!

Le Marche
Many tourists visit Le Marche for its natural beauty and most of the spectacular inland mountain country remains unscathed by the worst excesses of the 20th Century.
You'll find some of the most impressive mountain scenery to the south of the region amidst the Monti Sibillini, whose peaks are often covered with snow until the late spring.
The Frasassi caves are some of the most spectacular limestone caves you are every likely to visit.
Limestone again is the leading player at the Furlo Gorge, a dramatic natural pass through the mountains that has been in use since prehistoric times.
Most of Italy's Adriatic coastline is stubbornly flat. Monte Conero, just south of Ancona, is a rare exception - a high limestone mountain that plunges into the sea and guards a handful of delightful little bathing resorts.
The best mountain views to be had in the north of the region, on the doorstep of Urbino, are around the giant Monte Catria. In spring the upland meadows are carpeted in alpine flowers.
Recanati, the birthplace of the most beloved Italian poet of all time: the tender, bitter, unhappy and sublime Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837). It is difficult not to feel moved when visiting the building where the poet spent his childhood and adolescence.
Le Marche is Italy at it's most unspoiled.

Abruzzo:
• This region offers a staggering array of delicious home-cooked food, some of which you may never have seen before.
• Abruzzo's little-known capital, L'Aquila, is a beautiful city in an even more picturesque mountain setting. It makes a great base for exploring the region.
• High mountains, broad valleys and a strategic location: it's the ideal recipe for castle country.
• Abruzzo's jewel is the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, an unparalleled haven for wild animals, trees, flowers and travel-weary tourists.
• Few parts of Italy are better organized for camping than Abruzzo.
• Kids will love the thrill of tracking a spectacular underground river in Abruzzo's Stiffe Caves.
• Whether you like the seashore or the mountains, hill towns or river valleys, you're bound to find something that pleases you on this driving tour through eastern Abruzzo.
• Abruzzo is studded with convents and monasteries. Some are works of art, others have a world-class location and others offer an interesting alternative to staying in a hotel.

Serata #2 Recap & Notes
Buon giorno!
In class #2 we reviewed and practiced greetings and the alfabeto/pronunciation. We learned how to spell using the Italian alphabet and continued with vocabulary and phrases for 'Getting to know you,' and continued with Italian history and geography.
Complimenti (good job!) to all on their mini reports on the various regions of Italia. Molto interessanti!
I think for now, the easiest way for you to add your regional info is to add a comment to this page. See my example just above this comment that you are reading now. If you need any guidance on this, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Ci vediamo mercoledi prossimo,
