Welcome

Welcome to iWhittle! Website of the Pleasant Grove Woodcarvers. We are a group of men and women who enjoy getting together and “making chips”. If you would like, call what we do woodcarving or whittlin’. Although there are many very talented woodcarvers in our group, it is not a prerequisite to joining us for fellowship. As a fact, there are several non-carvers who are in regular attendance. We love and encourage visitors. We know if you come once, you will come again. The atmosphere is very relaxed and congenial. We meet every Monday (except holidays) in the Chandler Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church of Pleasant Grove in Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Our normal hours are 8:30 until we just can’t hold our knife any longer……usually around 3:30 or 4:00 pm. Mostly we just come and go as we need. Lunch is furnished each Monday by a different woodcarver on a rotation basis.

Please be sure to visit our picture album to view our members, carvings, and visitors.

Q & A

Q.What kind of wood do we use?
A. Most of us use northern bass wood from Heinecke wood products.com
Q.Can I use my pocket knife to carve wood?

A. Well yes you can.  I think that's how most all of us got started, but remember that you will have to lower the bevel of the edge on the knife from 45 to somewhere around 18 to 23 degrees. Remember that a knife that will shave hair want always cut wood.

About Flip

Welcome fellow woodcarvers and woodcarving enthuse.  My name is Phillip Johnston (aka Flip). I am a resident of Adamsville, Alabama.  I am an iron worker by trade. I am a member of Pleasant Grove and Tannehill Woodcarvers clubs.

I have played with woodcarving on and off since the age of eleven. I was introduced to carving by my Paw-Paw, Carl Wadsworth (aka Buddy). Paw-Paw was a skilled cabinet and furniture maker.  He also got great joy out of making children’s toys. He made popguns, sling shots, and rubber band guns.  He sold these toys frequently at Tannehill Trade days. He also did birds, chains, and boots. So, my connection to woodcarving is deeply rooted.

One thing I have learned is that woodcarvers are always eager to help others learn the skill of carving.  I have discovered that there is a brotherhood amongst woodcarvers that is second to none. Woodcarvers are definitely my kind of people!

I have a deep love and respect for all types of wood carving. But, my favorite carving is character carving. I have been steadily carving for six years and I would not trade my experiences for the world. It is a way of life for me. Outside of being a husband to a wonderful and beautiful wife and a daddy to the two most precious girls, there is nothing I would rather do.

Most of my success as a woodcarver is owed to the assistance of the club members, and a lot of trial and error.  I have never taken a class from a professional teacher, but I have relied heavily on the many books that I have bought over the years. After all one can never have too many books.  I have always believed the old saying “Knowledge is Power”.

Well, enough about me.  I would love to hear from you. So, if you are ever in Pleasant Grove on a Monday, we would love for you to stop by and check us out. We meet at the Chandler Family Life Center at Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church.  We meet at 8:00 am till whenever….

So come and visit us!

God Bless and War Eagle.
