Life is a train of moods like a string of beads; and as we pass through them they prove to be many colored lenses, which paint the world their own hue, and each shows us only what lies in its own focus.
Don't let the destination get in the way of the journey. Stop along the way to smell the roses and take some pictures.

Looks like you're finding your photography niche. You are capturing intriguing things to look at with your nighttime photos. Love it!
9/19/2010 1:57:58 PM - 002009989961
Because the roads are narrow and there is a state law limiting the number of full size vehicles on the island. We were told that there is something like a seven year waiting list.
9/19/2010 1:17:24 PM - 002001319666
Thanks for sharing photos of your trip to Catalina Island. It looks like an interesting place with plenty of activity. I like the boat photos. Do the locals have to use such little vehicles because the roads are narrow?
6/12/2010 7:55:09 PM - 002001319666
Wow! That is a long time to download. You'll get the hang of all the controls over time. I really like the quality of the photos.
6/11/2010 7:08:26 PM - 002009989961
I have alot to learn about it. The controls are different than my other ones. I needed to use a tripod for the night shots. It takes a long time to download. The pictures are 4' x 6' and 8-10MB each. I did a photo shoot at the golf course this morning at sunrise. The 120 photos took over an hour to download.
6/11/2010 1:37:43 AM - 002001319666
The new camera you had at Grandma's in Lake Havasu brings a whole different feel to your photos...very nice!

Were you in Oregon for work or fun?
1/24/2010 2:20:39 PM - 002009989961
I took over 900 pictures. It is hard to pick just a few to share.

No, these were taken last week between the 20th & 22nd.
1/23/2010 12:50:19 PM - 002001319666
I love the life quote above. Were the newly added pictures of Oregon taken around 1997? Chris and I are currently planning another road trip for the end of August to Crater Lake in Oregon, the Oregon coast and Redwood National Forest.

That is wonderful news! I am glad that your car is fixable.
9/28/2009 4:45:17 AM - 002009989961
I am glad to report that my car is fixable. The adjuster said that all but one of the dents can be pulled or popped out except for one on the trunk lid. It will require a little conventional repair and repainting. They already gave me a check and they will also guarantee the work done to it if I use one of their select dealers. The dealership where I purchased it is an approved repair facility. I am very thankful!
9/26/2009 1:38:14 PM - 002001319666
So, is the hail damage to your new car fixable?

You know the Opossum I told you about in my other comment? Jenna and I just finished skinning it. That trap's coming in pretty handy.
Thanks,

The Bass Pro Shop reminds me of the huge Cabelas store in Nebraska we visited when we lived in Ft. Collins. Thanks for putting the family photo on here.
11/21/2008 12:43:42 PM - 002001319666
Those are such pretty chickens! The calf is adorable. There doesn't look to be much meat on that deer. It is hunting season up here too...for elk. Elk is tasty. Dead elk is all the talk around here at the moment. Someone usually gives us a roast. I made up a yummy sweet and sour recipe for wild game. Maybe I will send it.
11/20/2008 2:02:56 PM - 002032953908
I'm glad you are enjoying the fowl and the dead animals. :)
11/16/2008 5:51:15 PM - 002001319666

Jen,
There is a fabric part that Katie is making that connects to the holes on each end and makes it into a baby hammock.

Sandy is so talented. :) You and she make a good pair.

I really love the sunset photos you put on here. I like the "olden days" photos too. Where is my CD?

Dad,
Thanks for sharing the airport museum. It looks great! What a fun project. Great ribbon-cutting photo. Love your "The Journey" quote.
Have a happy day!
9/14/2008 1:42:52 PM - 002001319666
Good Morning, Dad!
I love all the bird photos that you recently posted. I haven't seen quail or roadrunners in years!
I love the "Reality" quote! There is definitely something about nature, being in the open air that brings healing to the overworked mind and body. I commune with the Lord while enjoying his creations...the mountains, streams, trees, rocks, grass, butterflies, birds and all sorts of other wildlife. Hiking here in Colorado brings me a fresh sense of awe in the Lord and how he created all the natural resources for animals and man to survive. I wish you could join me next week on my hike to Maroon Bells. I am hoping I will not miss the spectacular change of colors there. All it takes is one snowfall to knock all the yellow leaves off the trees. Speaking of which, the higher elevations got snow this week. The snow completely melted off the tundra just 2 weeks ago and now they are white again.
Did you get the tile finished? Is Sandy back home? Did she take pictures for you to post?

Dad,
The quality of the slides to digital image is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
I just figured out how to get our Alamosa vacation photobook onto your website. It is at the bottom.

Dad,
Love the mushrooms. Looks like you took some of these photos when we met up in Ouray, CO in 2006. I recognize the yellowish rocks and water of Mineral Creek. My favorite mushroom picture is img_5875/Photo 13.
9/1/2008 3:53:37 AM - 002001319666
Dad, I love the hawk pictures. You really got some good ones of the adult flying in the air and some sweet baby ones in their nest.
Why don't you add the Alamosa photo book to your site? I tried to add it, but I don't have access. I will send it to you and you can figure out how to get it on here if you want to add it.
8/31/2008 3:31:28 AM - 002001319666
Dad,
I am thrilled that you were able to turn the 35 year old slides into digital images! I can't wait to see them all.
If you want a good wildflower book, look up Wildflowers of Colorado Field Guide by Don Mammoser with Stan Tekiela. ISBN # 1591931614. I have it and it is a great book. I got it in Telluride, CO in July. It is the best flower book I have seen. It is pocket sized with 428 pages. The last page is a ruler on the edges. It has colored sections in the book. If you are looking for a yellow flower the pages are marked on the edges for easy finding. Includes an index/checklist and what page to look.

New England Vacation
We planned this trip last year with Jennifer & Christopher. They did all of the investigating where we should go and where we should stay. We saw alot in eleven days and are now trying to recover before going back to work. They flew direct from Denver and we flew from El Paso to Houston where we changed planes and then on to Baltimore and on to Boston. We were both supposed to arrive in Boston at 4:30pm. Our plane was 10 minutes late and theirs was 10 minutes early, so they were waiting at our gate when we arrived. We got a taxi to our hotel and after that it was walking or the "T" for the next two days. We then picked up our rental SUV and headed for Vermont where we stayed the night in Stowe. Next day was sight seeing along the way to Bar Harbor, Maine ( pronounced BAA-HAA-BAA) where we had rented a great cottage for a week. We then drove back to Boston through New Hampshire where we stayed in Portsmouth for two nights. Had a great trip, took over 5,000 pictures. It will take awhile to sort them all out so there will be journal entries with pictures as I get to them.
Bella Beast Roller Queen (by Sandy)
Nathalie, a co-worker of mine, has started skating with a girl's roller derby team. All of us at Century 21 were shocked when she told us she was going to do it. We went to her first competition and these are a few of the shots Jerry took of her. She did fabulous! She said beforehand that skating in front of the crowd was going to make her nervous, but if it did you would never know it. What fun! Can't wait to see you next time Nathalie.
RVing in the Texas Hill Country
We traveled the the backroads of Texas Hill Country from April 10-17th. Our first stop was in Junction at the South Llano River State Park. From there we headed south on Hwy 83 through Leakey and then Hwy 337 to Vanderpool to Lost Maples State Park where we spent Sunday night. Hiked a little, biked a little. Rained during the night. Monday morning dropped back down to Hwyy 337 and made our way through Medina where we caught Hwy 16 north to Kerrville (Very scenic drive through the mountains with clouds down to the ground) continuing on to Fredericksburg where we spent Monday night. Rained again through the night. Tuesday we took Hwy 290 east through Johnson City and Dripping Springs to Austin. We stopped at LBJ Ranch and toured the Texas White House. We spent Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the heavily wooded and lushly flowered McKinney Falls State Park. (Pictures to follow as I have time to sort). Thursady morning we headed south on I-35 to New Braunfels where we made a wrong turn trying to find Historic Gruene, got stuck in traffic on the backroad after the train passed and the arm didn't come back up. Oh well, we're on vacation. We kept trucking on to Boerne where we spent Thursday night. Rained hard getting there and all through the night. There was flash flood warnings and all of the area schools were closed. Friday morning we started towards home through Comfort, an old and quaint town. We stayed Friday night back at South Llano River State Park in Junction. Saturday morning we got back on I-10 west where we took a backroad through Sheffield and Iraan. I will go into more detail as time permits. We took over 3000 pictures, so it takes a while to sort and pick the favorites to share. We have the birds posted. To follow we have butterflies, lakes, streams, waterfalls, flowers, doors, windows and others interesting items. We still need to identify all of the flowers that we can.
Family Tradition
When I was growing up it was tradition to make homemade donuts while we watched the Rose Parade. So, I got up this morning and made donuts. Now, what do I do with them?
Cash For Clunkers
We had been looking for a new car for Sandy for some time and when the "Cash For Clunkers" came along we decided to take the leap. We have looked at all the brands except the Camry up until last night. I mean we looked at it some time ago and have been narrowing the list. It came down to the Camry or the Accord. We ended up getting more for the money with the Camry. We didn't get to the dealer until about 7 pm and they close at 8pm. They got breaking news that the program was so successful that it was closing down at midnight. They stayed and did the paperwork for us because it all had to be filed by midnight. We left the dealer with the new car at 11pm. We are both dead today.
Bandalier National Park
The pictures of Bandalier National Park were taken by Sandy. This was part of our Chama vacation and her first attempt at photography.
Chama, NM Trip
We left for Chama,NM on April 18th. We met Jennifer & Chris in the afternoon. We stayed in our RV at the Little Creel Resort. Jennifer & Chris stayed at a motel about 1/4 mile from us. We took day trips to Los Ojos, Tierra Amarilla, Brazos, New Mexico. We also went to Pagosa Springs, Pagosa Junction, Colorado. Jennifer & Chris headed for home on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday we headed for Los Alamos and Bandalier National Park. We stayed in the National Park campground and hiked the trail around the cliff dwellings on Thursday morning (Pictures to come). We left about noon and headed for San Antonio, NM where we stayed overnight. Friday morning we left for Ruidoso, stayed overnight and headed to El Paso at about noon on Saturday. Of course we stopped and smelled the roses along the way. A picture speaks a thousand words, see the picture albums to the right.
Extreme Makeover Home Edition “Sincerely El Paso”
As soon as I heard that Extreme Makeover was coming to El Paso I applied as a volunteer electrician. A few days later I got a call telling me that I was selected and asked if I could work on Saturday Jan 17th from noon to 6 pm. I ended up working with 2 other electricians from noon to 8pm. It was a rewarding experience. For the 8 hours that I worked on the house I never saw anyone get mad or upset. Everyone had a job to do whether it be skilled labor or just keeping the jobsite clean, delivering supplies or making sure that the workers had food and drink. Everyone was treated equal . It was true teamwork where each team member was just as important as the other, where cooperation was a key factor in making the project come together. Each person had a small piece of the puzzle that resulted in a complete house at the end of 105 hours without anyone really being overworked.
Bass Pro Shop
We started the day at Bass Pro Shop in Springfield, Mo. (the headquarters). The man in the picture with us is John Morris, the owner and CEO of Bass Pro Shops.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_Pro_Shops The Springfield store is over 300,000 square feet and is alot like Disneyland. He is an amazing man. Very nice. He let each of the kids pick out something for a Christmas present. We then went to Lamberts Cafe where they deliver the rolls to you by pitching them from across the room.
http://www.throwedrolls.com/ozark.html Lots more to tell, but it will wait until another time. We'll be going to the Amish farm tomorrow to pick up milk.
Ice Cream
Jenna reminded me that I didn't say anything about the ice cream. We went to Ava 13 miles away for ice cream and Walmart. The drug store is the same as when I was a kid. It had a lunch counter that also served ice cream. Their prices got stuck in a time warp. Ice cream for 5 cents a scoop. Jeff got to be the big tipper. Fifteen of us got 2 scoops each, Jeffs hands the lady two bucks and says "keep the change". The lady says, "Oh thank you"
On The Farm in Missouri
We left El Paso at 8:30 Saturday Morning and stayed in Wichita Falls, Tx (625 miles) at a nice city owned RV Park for $10.00 per night with hook ups. The next morning we left Wichita Falls at about 9:30 due to the time change. We got into Mansfield at about 4:30 (400 miles) and were able to get the 5th Wheel set up before dark. Gas along the way has been $1.81 to $1.73. It has been nice during the day but as low as 26 degrees at night. The new furnace has been working great. Monday and Tuesday we worked on installing electric and sewer to our RV site on the farm. Most of the day Tuesday me and Jeff spent most of the day running around. We started out for the Amish farm for milk and stopped at 3 hardware stores looking for a part we couldn't get locally. We had to go to the bank in Springfield so while we were there I tried to get a new battery for Sandy's phone. They didn't have one in stock and it turned out to be cheaper to get a new phone. On Wednesday a friend brought over a deer as a gift and taught Jeff how to clean and dress it. All the dogs and chickens were happy with the bones and scraps.
Devils Hall Trail, Guadalupe Mtns
We took a friend on a hike to Devils Hall in the Guadalupe Mountains today. The Guadalupe Mountains are 100 miles from El Paso which took us about an hour and a half to get there. The hike was about 5 miles round trip and took us about four and a half hours. That counts stopping to take 476 pictures and having our lunch on the trail at the Devils Stairs. We continued to the Devils Hall and beyond after lunch. As you can see in some of the photos, the trail is pretty rough in some places. We had to walk around and over some large boulders.
Week In Review
My sister & BIL were passing through on their way to the Dallas area to see their son & family Friday a week ago and stayed overnight and left early Saturday morning. We took them to Cattleman's @ Indian Cliffs Ranch. We all enjoyed. On their way back they arrived on Thursday night and stayed until early Saturday morning. It was a short time but we had a good visit and showed them around town a little bit. My latest project between my usual chores and cleaning the ductwork out was to make this baby sling for Jodi. My DIL will make the sling portion for the baby. Apparently the ducts had never been cleaned before. I found two wrenches and alot of roofing nails in the duct.
Air Traffic Control Tower Cab
When I was at Laughlin-Bullhead International Airport we purchased this tower cab from The contractor that built the new Air Traffic Control Tower at Lindbergh Field in San Diego. This cab was going to be demolished and we found out about it and purchased it for $20,000.00 and paid another $10,000.00 to have it disassembled and delivered to us. It was my problem to figure out how to put it back together again. It was originally a kit so it all bolted together but I didn't have the blueprints. It was like putting together a puzzle. The parts only fit one way. It is five sided and identical to the tower at El Paso International. Because of the topography of Laughlin-Bullhead the tower is only three stories high but is 130 feet higher than the runway. The contractor installed the airport employee completed cab on top of a two story building that he built. The airport then equipped the cab with the FAA specified equipment. This was operated as a FAA contract tower. I think I have a picture of it completed. I'll have to search for it. I found the completed picture, although it is not very good.
Sandy's Tole Painting
Sandy is a self-taught tole painter. We bought a few books and she learned how to side load the brush and so forth. I don't have the patience for it myself so I make the wood part and she does the painting. The corner clock was a present for Jennifer. The broken chair came out of the trash and was painted at the request of a friend as a going away present when they moved to Oklahoma City. The little bear was one of the first things she painted along with the rabbits. The drop leaf table was for me. It has sat next to my chair for 15 years. She painted a table cloth on it. The chair with the tall back I built and she painted 20 years ago when we lived at the Grand Canyon National Park. That was the very first item she painted along with the matching mirror. They were for Jennifer. The little girl book shelf was for Jenna, our first grand-daughter. The fake window with the curtains and light bulb are on our storage shed. The planter was made for Sandy's mom about 20 years ago along with a matching mirror that hangs above it.
Building The Indoor Hot Tub Room
I was going through alot of old photos recently and ran across a few pictures of the 300 square foot hot tub room I added to our house in Golden Shores. This again was before digital. I actually didn't know I had any pictures. I don't have any in-progress pictures. I am always too busy building and forget to take pictures until it is too late. The pictures in the next column are scanned and didn't turn out very good, but they are all I have. I was looking at the building permit and see it took me about 50 days from the time the permit was issued until I got the final. I thought that seemed like a long time and then I remembered that I was only working on it after work and on weekends and I could only pick up materials on the weekends. Also it was in the summer and even though alot of the work was in the shade, when it is 120 degrees it is hot. Chris and Jennifer were living in Lake Havasu City at the time and Chris being in the insulation business offered to insulate for me. Other than that I did all the work myself including digging the underground electric service by hand 2 feet deep and 100 feet long. I think I got sunburned that day. Anyway we enjoyed having the 8 foot by 8 foot hot tub indoors. In Golden shores it is too hot in the summer to enjoy it outside and too cold in the winter. An added benefit was it didn't get dirty from the blowing sand. When we sold the house it still looked brand new. With all of the windows and the humidity the plants loved it and thrived. We had a corn plant that a friend gave us back in 1986, we had moved it several times. It bloomed and had a very strong perfume type fragrance. We researched and found that these almost never bloom in captivity. I have a picture of it somewhere. I will try and find it.
Chickens & Turkeys
These are 35mm pictures that I scanned. We raised Silver Laced Wyandotte, Rhode Island Reds and White Turkeys when we lived in Arizona. In these pictures the chickens and turkeys are only a couple of months old. The turkeys would come to Sandy when she called them. In one of the photo's there is a turkey sitting on her knee getting it's neck scratched. What do you think about Rooster Cogburn? Isn't he handsome?
Jennifer's baby Pictures
These are slides from when we lived in Alaska. The quality of the pictures are not the best but I'm glad to have them. I digitized them just recently.
El Paso Int'l Aviation History Museum
We have been putting this museum together for a few months. It follows a chronological order from 1928 to the present. Lolita assembled all of the historic items and decided what to use and the arrangements. I had the beacon removed from the roof of the terminal building and converted it to be able to operate on display inside of the building. The DCB-36 was originally installed at the airport in May 1931. We had a new one installed on top of the Air Traffic Control Tower in 2004. Building Maintenance, the welder and electricians completed the modifications to the building and I sewed the curtains that surround the monitor that plays a slide show of 100 historic photos of El Paso International Airport.
Recycle House
We ran across this house in Antonito, CO. It is made of all recycled materials.
Katmai Alaska
The Plane is the one I talked about yesterday that flew us from King Salmon to Katmai and picked us up 10 days later. And no. that thing that looks like a cabin on stilts is not where I stayed, it is where you keep your food so the bears don't get it. One of the orange tents was my home for ten days.
Junior Photographer
Here is where Jennifer got her start. I think this was 1973.
Mushrooms From Katmai National Monument, Alaska
As I mentioned yesterday, I have been digitizing slides from up to 40 years ago. These mushroom pictures are from 1976. I am pretty happy with the results. It is a little time consuming but worth it. They were taken at Katmai National Monument in Alaska. At the time I was living in King Salmon, Alaska. I took off from land on a sea plane and landed on the lake at Brooks Camp. I camped there in a tent for 10 days and ventured out from there as far as "The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes".
Mushrooms
I have been digitizing slides from nearly 40 years ago and find that my interests were the same then. I have pictures of waterfalls, animals, birds, mushrooms, wildflowers and barns. I also found a picture of Jennifer at 2 years old taking a picture with my 35mm on a tripod. That must be where she got her great photography skills. Hope you enjoy the mushrooms. It is hard to pick just a small amount to share. These were all taken in Colorado in 2006.
Red-Tailed Hawks
I was fortunate enough to discover this hawk’s nest on June 12, 2008. At the time of discovery the nest had three little fuzzy babies in it. They were actually quite large for birds that were probably only a week old. I followed their progress through July 11th. The next time I checked on them they had fledged and were all gone. Sorry the pictures didn't enter in order. The 2nd picture is one of the babies.

We left for our annual vacation Saturday morning August 9th. The first night we stayed at the Santa Fe, NM KOA. Very nice RV park. We got in early so we rode our bikes around the park. Grandma got a massage. It rained hard through the night and Grandma had a leak that got the corner of her bed wet. She had to dry it out with the hair dryer. I got up on the roof in the morning and found a small crack in the base of the skylight and patched it. No more leaks the rest of the trip and we had some really hard rains along the way.
Sunday, August 10th we stayed in La Veta, CO. at Mary's RV Park on the Highway of Legends. It was a small park in a residential area. No fence around it. Our space was next to the road. As I was looking out the back window, I could see deer across the street eating the leaves from a tree in someone’s backyard. Early the next morning I was sitting at the table having my coffee and a Momma, Daddy and baby deer walked right by our trailer. We explored the town on our bikes riding by the train depot, down main street and down the residential streets. We stopped to look at a house with a "for sale" sign on it, and of course Grandma always checks the doors. She found an open door, so we got to see the inside.
Monday, August 11th we continued on the Highway of Legends. It rained most of the trip. We passed through a town called Stonewall. As we came to it, it looked like a big stone mountain, but as we passed it I noticed that it was very narrow, like a wall, hence the name. We stopped in the rain at a lake and had lunch. Continued on the Highway of Legends to Walsenburg where we caught HWY 160 to Alamosa, CO. Decided that we didn't want to spend three days there before we met Jennifer and Chris there and then another four days with them so we went over the mountain (10800 feet) to Pagosa Springs and spent 3 nights at the Blanco River RV Park on the Blanco River. We had fun riding our bikes around the RV Park. We took day trips from there to see different waterfalls. You will notice that there are no waterfall pictures under Silver Falls. That is because the road was closed due to an avalanche, so we rode our bikes. Didn’t make it all the way to the falls because there would be a lot of hills to climb to get back to the truck. Some of the horses in the pictures were taken on the roads to waterfalls.
Thursday, August 14th we headed to our final destination of Alamosa, CO. to meet up with Jennifer and Chris to explore the Great Sand Dunes National Park. We met them for dinner that night.
Friday, August 15th we packed a picnic lunch and headed to the dunes. We spent some time at the Visitor Center where we learned the history of the Dunes. It was cold and windy. We decided to take the four wheel drive trail. We crossed the river nines times in each direction. Saw a herd of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. Lots of wildflowers. It rained most of this trip.
Saturday, August 16th we went on the Rio Grande train from Alamosa, CO to Antonito, CO where we changed to the Cumbres and Toltec narrow gauge coal powered steam train to Osier, CO where we had a buffet lunch. The weather there changes very fast. It was cold on the first train. The second train was comfortable all the way up. Just as we finished lunch it started to rain. By the time we boarded the train back to Antonito it was hailing and it hailed about halfway back. I don't remember how many miles it was on the steam train, but it was 7 or 8 hours. We went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner.
Sunday, August 17th we went back to the Dunes. We had a picnic lunch and Grandma, Jennifer and Chris climbed to the top of the Dunes and played in the river while I took pictures of them and of wild flowers.
Monday, August 18th we said our goodbyes and each headed home. We went through Chama, NM and ended up staying in Belen, NM.
Tuesday, August 19th our final leg of the trip back to El Paso. We stopped at a large sporting goods store in Las Cruces, NM and looked around. The next stop was Camping World in Anthony, TX and then home.
Here is where Jennifer got her start. I think this was 1973.
