Ideas for Screen Free Activities

Winning Recipe created by 2nd Grade Student

Second grade student Erin W. participated in a contest sponsored by Sodexho. Healthy recipes were on the menu for students to create. Erin faced her first round of competitions at Jackson and eventually ended up as the 1st place winner. Next, Erin's award winning recipe was put to the test during a district wide contest. She faced many tasty recipes and successfully finished with 3rd place overall. Try out her special recipe.

1 15 oz. can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 11 oz. can whole kernel corn, drained
1 t. minced fresh jalapeno pepper
1 avocado, chopped
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
1/4 c. chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 c. diced red onion
juice squeezed from 2 limes
Tortilla chips (we prefer the dipping kind, that are shaped like small cups)

Combine all ingredients except avocado. Cover and chill for at least two hours. Add avocado just before serving.

Skating to a Healthy Heart Beat

Thanks to STAR SKATE, Jackson students and their families spent a couple of hours having fun and skating for a healthy heart on February 16th!  Mrs. Graves came out to support the fundraising event by doing the "Hokie Pokie" and "Rolling the Dice". It was a blast!

Jackson PTA supports Heart Healthy activities for students and families, especially as we close out the month of February, which is Healthy Heart Awareness Month.

According to the American Heart Association AHA, more than 17 percent of all children in the US are overweight -- that's about 12 million children. An additional 12 million children are at risk of becoming overweight. While children are eating more and weighing more, they are exercising less. Also, during the winter months, physical activity is further restricted by cold weather, forcing kids to engage in more dormant activities such as watching television, playing video games or going to the movies. AHA statistics report that almost one in four children do not participate in any free-time physical activity, and a typical American youth spends four to five hours a day watching TV, using the computer or playing video games.

In a drastic effort to change these statistics, parents and families are encouraged to make significant lifestyle changes to promote a healthy lifestyle. It's not easy for kids to say no to fast food and other unhealthy snacks, nor is it easy to get them to participate in heart stimulating activities when they're accustomed to sitting in front of the television. Hence, when making lifestyle changes the results are better if everyone in the family participates.

The Roller Skating Association, RSA and its member skating centers located throughout the U.S. offer families an affordable solution to get moving and have fun. Roller skating is an excellent indoor activity that is equal to jogging in terms of calories burned and muscles used. In fact, just one hour of moderate roller skating burns 330 calories for a person weighing 143 pounds. Not only is roller skating safe and great exercise for all ages, it's also great fun for the entire family.

"The best part about skating is kids love rolling around to their favorite music for hours; parents don't even have to bribe them away from the television to get active," said Joe Champa, president of the Roller Skating Association International. "Skating centers throughout the country offer clean, fun and affordable family entertainment, while providing a great workout at the same time."

For more information and suggestions on how to become more active and promote a healthy heart, please contact the American Heart Association.

Jackson raises $$ for the American Heart Association

Last year Jackson raised over $8000.00 for the American Heart Association. Help continue the fight against heart disease. Visit the www.americanheart.org/jump to join fundraising efforts and learn more about the program. Students will be able to participate in Jackson's "Jump Rope for Heart" Money must be turned by Thursday, Feb. 23rd. They are learning all about the heart and heart-healthy lifestyles this month!

Did you know if you exercise less than 150 minutes per week, you need to increase your activity level. Regular moderate intensity physical activity helps keep your heart in good condition.

When you are inactive, you burn fewer calories, you are at higher risk for cholesterol problems, blood sugar and blood pressure problems, and your weight is often harder to manage. If that’s not enough, physically active people nearly always report better moods, less stress, more energy and a better outlook on life. http://mylifecheck.heart.org

Old Fashioned Sugar Plum Recipe

Sugar plums, wholesome and humble, are easy to prepare at home – combining nuts with once exotic spices and dried fruits.  This is basically a homemade Lara Bar.

Ingredients:

· 1 cup shelled walnuts

· zest of 1 orange or ½ tsp orange extract

· 1 tsp ground cinnamon

· 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg

· 1/4 tsp ground allspice

· 1/4 tsp ground coriander seeds

· 1 cup chopped pitted dates

· 1/2 cup chopped dried apricots

· 1/2 cup chopped pitted prunes (dried plums)

· Coarse granulated sugar or dried coconut, optional

Toss the nuts into a food processor with the zest of one orange, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, coriander as well as chopped dates, apricots and prunes.  Pulse the mixture three to four times to combine, then process the dried fruit, nuts and spices until a paste forms – about four or five minutes.  Depending on your food processor, you may need to do this in two batches.  Transfer the paste to a mixing bowl and form the sugar plums by rolling about one tablespoon of the paste in the palms of your hands until a round ball forms.

Dredge the sugar plum in either granulated sugar (Sugar in the Raw works great because of its large crystals) or dried coconut.

Variations: You can substitute any nut or seed for the walnuts such as pecans or almonds, you can used different dried fruits such as dried apples, figs or raisins to replace some of the fruits and you can use the spices of your choice such as anise or ground cardamom to replace the coriander.
