Journal Entries!

National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival

So below is a collection of journal entries I did on my phone throughout my vacation... I went with Maddy, teacher here in ZJG, and Madison, a teacher in Jiaxing through CIEE who was on my flight.

I'm waiting in the train station in Wuxi and a train just past by-it got me super excited. I love trains. I think this is going to be such a great trip. China is a wonderful place and this is a fabulous experience I'm only a month into!!   Oct. 3 10:04 PM

So I'm laying here on the train. It's unlike anything I've ever experienced. To the left of me is a bed like mine, maybe two feet wide and most definitely not longer than five and a half feet. I have a pillow and a blanket although the blanket is under my knees partially and my purse is at my feet. Below me are 2 beds exactly like my own and kitty corner is the same. To the right there is a wall, on the other side of the wall there's Madison and then next to her is Maddy. I'm sleeping with my head toward the aisle, beyond my head is the luggage rack holding my oversized and overpacked backpack along with our shoes holding our glasses. I can't believe I had the impression we'd have a small little room to ourselves!! Lol well I'm perfectly content and think this is a wonderful experience, how many people can say they took an 11 hour train ride sleeping in a 2x5.5 ft bed with 6 other people in the immediate area and probably 6 other areas the same?!? It's absolutely the experience of a lifetime. And with that I'll try and get some sleep. Oct. 4 12:07 AM

So it's only 7:26 and were already off the train, we've been to the bathroom and are back in line trying to buy our return tickets. I was woken up this morning by a man hitting my shoulder wanting my ticket. It wasn't even 7:00 yet, definitely not 11 hours like I had thought-more like 8! Anyways we got a tourist map already too.  She said 5 I said 1 she said no so I started to walk away she followed and said 2 so I said okay :-) my 1st bargaining experience. But I'll admit I read somewhere that you can get them for 1or 2 so I'm not sure if I would have thought to do that if I hadn't read about it. I'll have to try again with souvenirs. So the bed wasn't too bad, I think it may have been more plush than my bed at my apt. Although I did end up using the blanket as it did get cold eventually. I must have woke up at least once an hour but fell back asleep immediately. I think it took me a while to fall asleep in the first place. I was listening to my relaxing music and remember waking up when the last track ended so I'm not sure how long I had slept for that time. Oct. 4 7:35 AM

So that was while I was on vacation, now that I'm back, and yes this is definitely delayed seeing as how it's Oct. 19 and I got back Oct. 7 but better late than never!

So day by day-

Oct. 3-This was the day we left for our vacation.  We caught a bus out of ZJG at 3:30 to go to Wuxi.  This took about an hour and a half.  Within the first few minutes on the bus the driver was rather horn happy-he honked his horn at everything.  I decided I should count how many times he honks his horn, by the time we got to Wuxi it was over 75 times, I stopped counting!  It was crazy, what made it worse was we were seated directly behind the driver, needless to say my head was aching by the time we made it to Wuxi from the loud, obnoxious horn.  Once we arrived in Wuxi we found the train station so we knew where we needed to be later that night and decided we should get some dinner.  Rather than go on a wild goose chase with our bags (mine was pretty heavy) we decided to crash at McDonald’s, which was right next to the train station.  We had a great time playing cards to pass the time.  We eventually headed over to the train station around 9 since our train was to leave at 10:46 or something. We ended up waiting around til 11:30 when our train finally got there. We were unsure what to expect about our train but it worked out well.

Oct. 4-So after maybe 5 hours of “sleep” we arrived in Tai’An (much sooner than we thought we would).  We ended up getting our return tickets after waiting in line for a good 45 minutes at least.  Well I waited off to the side while Maddy and Madison got the tickets.  Turned out the only available return train was the next day, Oct. 5 at 8 or Oct. 10 which was too late since we had to be back to teach on the 9th.  We found our way out of the train station to try and find a bus to take us to our hostel.  After looking a few different places, “talking” to some locals, we found where the right bus stop was and which stop was ours.  Well riding the bus didn’t go quite as smoothly as we thought it would.  We ended up missing our stop, so we had to get off the bus and get back on the next one going the direction we had just came from!  It was hard because the bus stops were hardly marked and if they were it was in like size 10 font on the side of a post.  All in all we made it to the hostel got our room, refueled on some peanut butter sandwiches, and discussed our plans for our 2 days there.  We ended up getting lunch at a place that was recommended in the guidebook before visiting the Dai Temple.  The restaurant was known for dumplings so we ordered some but were unsure how much to order along with another dish, and if we would need a 3rd dish. The server told us that we should get 3 dishes so we did, and ended up with WAY too much food.   The dumplings came out last after we’d ate a good portion of potatoes and some delicious kung pao chicken.  We had 2 full plates of dumplings and hardly finished one.  All things considered, it was a good lunch but I’m not quite sure why our server thought we could manage to eat all of that and didn’t recommend that we only order 2 dishes.  We visited the Dai Temple next and spent about 3 hours there.  It was huge and there were a lot historical statues and whatnot to check out as well as a performance by an “elderly” group.  It was pretty entertaining.   After the temple we went to a Hot-Pot restaurant, this was my first time at one.  It was really good. We ended up accidently ordering some type of brain…it said flower brain, which I guess, is also or close to what they call broccoli or cauliflower but definitely not in this case. We got them to take it away which is good because we surely weren’t going to eat it!  We had some type of pork, bean sprouts, mushrooms, and “spinach” which wasn’t what we thought it was going to be-it was more like fish meat balls or something… but I liked the Hot-Pot J  After dinner we thought it’d be a good idea to go back to the hostel and get a bit of sleep before climbing the mountain.  We didn’t end up getting back, showered, and into bed until 8:30 or so which didn’t allow for too much sleep since we were getting back up at 11:30 to head to Mount Tai. We left the hostel about midnight after maybe 2 hours of sleep and that’s stretching it!

Oct. 5-We arrived at the foot of the mountain at 1 and were able to get our tickets for half price by showing them our student ID cards from our US universities.  It was 60 Yuan instead of 120.  We stopped at the halfway point to sit and have some peanut butter sandwiches and put on warmer clothes although we were sweating so much it was getting colder and colder as we approached the summit.  After 3 hours of burning thighs and playing a geography game to keep our minds off of our burning thighs, as if that was possible, we ended up reaching the summit at 4:05.  It was over 6500 steps to the top, I found 50 Yuan at the summit as well! It was so cold at the top! They had big Russian looking coats you could rent out but piled on our hats, scarves, and gloves to keep warm. We also had a milk tea to pass the time and heat ourselves up.  They say that everything increases in price as you go up the mountain-I paid 8 Yuan for a milk tea at the top that I saw for 2.5 at the supermarket a couple days when I came back.  It’s a huge money making opportunity up there.  We had to wait around until 6 or so for the sun to come out and it was crazy how many other people were there!  Out of all the other people we only saw 2 people with Wisconsin sweatshirts on and 1 guy from Germany, the rest were Asian! We had done something that was truly a Chinese holiday activity J  We ended up heading back down the mountain around 7:30.  At the halfway point Madison and I took a bus to the bottom.  Going down the mountain was just as painful as going up! It was terrible on our knees and calves! There was the constant fear going up and down of missing a step and tumbling down all of them taking out several people at the same time. We got back to the hostel around 9 and attempted to get some sleep.  About 1:30 we got up, got ready and went to get some lunch. The guidebook had mentioned a bakery and it was only a couple blocks from our hostel so we went there, it was delicious! After the bakery we went to find this church that had been mentioned in the guidebook, I think we found it but it was not open so we took a couple pictures and headed to get an iced coffee at McDonald’s…not your typical iced coffee either, this had ice cream on top! It was pretty good and that definitely says something since I don’t care for coffee usually!  Although to add ice cream kinda makes it more of a dessert and I don’t even know if I’d classify it as coffee then!  We got some stamps for our postcards, went back to the hostel and hung out there before leaving for our 8:00 train. One of the hostel workers/owners actually gave us a ride to the station so that was great, we didn’t have to deal with the buses or cab it there with all of our big bags-or at least me with my big bag.  So we got to the train station with a couple hours to wait.  I forgot to mention when we got our return tickets the only thing they had available were standing tickets. We weren’t quite sure what to expect with this one but we knew it couldn’t be too good.  We figured it was a rush to the train cart so we waited in line well before they’d let us go just to make sure we could be 1st.  Once they opened the gate we ran to get the platform but a worker stopped us and we all had to wait so I thought “Great, we’re at the front of the line, this lady will take us to the platform and we’ll be able to get on 1st and grab any open seats.” Boy was I wrong, we all lined up, then she started us walking and before I knew it everyone was racing around us so we started running-keep in mind our legs have already had intense exercise from climbing the mountain-we had to run up a flight of stairs, then down a hallway then back down a flight of stairs. OUCH. It hurt. But that wasn’t all; we had to run even more! Our train car was the 1st one so we had to run all the way down to the end of the platform, but the tricky part was that it wasn’t marked where the cars would stop so we spaced ourselves out somewhat but then the train started coming and I was closest to the end so I bolted to the doorway. Not that it helped too much because when I got in I wasn’t sure which way to go and there were SO many people on the train already.  We found one seat and didn’t think it’d get too much better than that so we settled in there and planned on rotating with the seat.  I decided I’d sit on the floor for a while which wasn’t so bad, people had expected me to get up for them to walk by but it was much more work and didn’t make any sense so I just had them climb over my legs and it worked just as well if not better since I didn’t have to get up constantly. After about 2 hours I decided to stand and stretch my legs when a man offered me his seat.  So I took it and talked to him for a bit, he was university student who was heading back to college.  I continually asked him if he wanted his seat but he kept telling me “you sit, you sit” so I did.

Oct. 6-About midnight I started to doze off and would doze off for about 20 min each time waking up with a cramp in my next.  I didn’t bring my neck pillow since we had a sleeper train on the way there and I didn’t think I’d need it!  Once again about 3 AM I asked him if he wanted his seat and he said if I wasn’t tired he’d take it.  So I gave it back to him, stood for about an hour then the people around our 1 seat left and the 3 of us were able to sit.  We had thought we’d be back in Wuxi by 4 since it didn’t take very long the 1st time but of course when we’re not in a sleeper car it would take longer.  The train kept making random stops and would sit in stations for 30 minutes or so.  The lady across from me while I was sitting kept putting her feet up right next to my legs and there was a disgustingly in love couple next to her so it was quite the trip. Also it wasn’t air conditioned so there were times I could have sworn it was 100 degrees in there with no ventilation and about 100 people-you can only imagine…We finally made it to Wuxi around 8 AM.  We were tired, hot, hungry, and sore.  We resorted once again to the McDonald’s for breakfast.  We had booked a Super8 motel since our bus tickets were for the 7th so we had a day and a half to spend in Wuxi.  One we ate breakfast we went to find a cab to take us to our hotel but then I saw it was kinda just across the street but of course it wasn’t quite that easy to get there.  About 25 min later we’re at the reception desk being told they don’t have our reservation and we should go around the corner to 7 Days Inn (or something)…frustrating! So we go there and they don’t have any rooms available.  We see a 25 story or so hotel across the street from the 7 Day, looks expensive but at this point we’d already been turned down 2x and figured we’d try it.  We walk in and are amazed, it’s beautiful, clean, and so nice.  Turns out its 488 for a room with 2 beds but they’re not very big so we get an extra bed for 200-total bout 100 US…not too shabby.  We checked in, showered in their amazing shower, and crashed. We hadn’t had a full nights sleep since the night of Oct. 2 and it was now Oct. 6.  We slept from 11 AM to 6 PM and I’m pretty sure the only reason we woke up was because the room attendant knocked on our door!  So we decided we probably should get some dinner, we went to Ajisen Noodle, apparently it’s a chain all over the world, and they have seaweed salad!!!! It was so good, not just the seaweed salad, but the pork and rice dish I ordered was stupendous as well.  After dinner we went and got some water and decided we’d just relax in the hotel room and explore Wuxi the next day.  The hotel gave us a card for a free soda or juice so we went and got some chocolate mousse to enjoy with our soda.

Oct. 7-We slept in…even though we had gone to bed at midnight we still slept til about 10, and that’s after sleeping for 7 hours the DAY before…that just tells you how sleep deprived we were!  The hotel had a baggage check so we explored Wuxi with the luxury of not having to lug around our bags.  We were going to go to Lake Tai but apparently it’s quite a distance from the city so we went shopping instead. There wasn’t really much in the guidebook to see in Wuxi.  I ended up buying a winter coat that’s super cute and heavy so it should be good.  It was only 300 Yuan (roughly $36) this was especially good since I didn’t bring mine!  Yadda, yadda, yadda, not too much more exciting stuff happened the rest of the day. We caught our bus home at 7 ended up going to a different bus station in ZJG and were unsure of where we were but turned out we were pretty close to our school.

Really long entry and rather detailed but that’s how I remember my vacation.  I really enjoyed it and feel like we did a pretty authentic Chinese vacation and that makes me happy.  We got to experience the sleeper car, standing car, and much more.  It was really great to get away for a couple days and see a different part of China. It was also some good girl time! J Always good to have that!

One month!!!

So I had this great entry when to post it and it disappeared...guess I'll try it again.

I've been in China for one month exactly! Thoughts and impressions....

1-The people in ZJG are great.  They are so friendly to me, a foreigner who can hardly communicate with them.

and now I'm now I'm trying to remember what I had on my other one but just getting frustrated, I think it's time for bed and I'll add more tomorrow.

Here's what I finally came up with to add...

A couple things that I’ve noted over my 1st month here

1-It never gets old seeing the kids (4-7yrs) on the playground while walking to class and have them rush up to me to practice their English which mainly consists of “Hello, Good morning. Nice to meet you, and what’s your name.”  It brings a smile to my face every time.

2-It is definitely a learning process not only for the students but for myself as well, I think this will continue throughout the year.  I tweak my lessons throughout the week which works well but I always feel bad for the classes who have my 1st lessons.

3-I still can’t imagine living my teenage years as they do.  They’re up every morning by 6 at the latest, attend school all day, and I’m not entirely sure but if they leave (some live on campus) they don’t leave until 9 PM.

4-China isn’t a HUGE culture shock.  Sure, some things are different-squat toilets, baby bottoms everywhere, being charged for a plastic sack at the store (why isn’t the US doing this?!).   And I realize these are all minor superficial differences but all in all I’m doing well with EVERYTHING.

5-My town is very clean and the people living here are very friendly.  A smile is often returned on the street, even a “Ni hao”.  There are definitely times where people will look at me for longer than a couple seconds and are so curious about me, the foreigner, which they’ll point out.  In the grocery store people will look at me, then instantly look at my cart to see what I’m buying.  It makes me smile.

6-I can’t get over how cheap things are here.  A taxi ride is about the equivalent of $1.30.  A bottled water is usually not over 30 cents.  A meal at the school cafeteria is about $1.  It’s just hard to believe how inexpensive items are here.

Learning the Ropes (or attempting)

So this past week has been quite the learning experience...

Monday-Woke up early to go to breakfast at 7, its actually not too bad getting up early, it's nice to have a bit of free time before class rather than rushing :) Last Thursday a girl from my class invited me to go listen to CDs with them during dinnertime so as I was leaving my last class Monday she approached me in the hall.  I went and listened to CDs with her and 2 other girls, who are in Richard's class...they were pretty funny.  One of them tells me they read a passage from this book and asked if I would read it so of course I said sure.  So she tells me we'll read it after the next song, and towards the end of the song she says we read it over the intercom so the ENTIRE school hears it.  I suggest to her that we alternate paragraphs but she tells me there are words she doesn't know so she'll read the 1st and last paragraph.  So I end up reading this speech by Michael Jackson...I was really curious about it so I looked it up and  I found out it's actually a lot longer so I picked out what I remembered reading and included it below-it's actually not too bad!

Tuesday-I start new lessons on Tuesday so it was the 1st day of the new lessons, they went alright.  I had my youngest students (7th grade) draw the animals we discussed last week in their environment/habitat and describe the picture to the class.  I let them hang their pictures in my classroom so now there's a bit more color!  My 8th graders learned about traveling last week so I had them do an activity with flags.  They had to partner up back to back, one would be the artist and the other would be the describer.  I gave the artist a blank sheet of paper and the describer a map of a South American country...this worked pretty well for this class so now I have "flags" hanging on the wall with the animals.  The point of this lesson was to have them practice their speaking skills and listening skills.  My oldest students (I had promised a song) listened to the Backstreet Boys (they love them) and I had them fill in the blank with the lyrics then paraphrase each lyric.  It also worked pretty well.

Wednesday-Started out alright but then had to become the meanest teacher.  I had explained the map activity to a class and they started.  Well they were showing their maps and talking in Chinese, so I took everyone's piece of paper and told them to have a seat. I explained the point of the lesson was not to copy the map, it was to use your English skills! I told them that we could try again if they wanted, otherwise we'd write papers and read them in front of the class-boring right?!  I let them try again and it was just as terrible as before so I had no choice but to take their papers, once again, and get them back in their seats.  I told them: I had other classes who had done this activity without any problems so they should have been able to handle it, I thought we could do a fun activity but since they would not listen we were writing papers and reading them to the class, and that bad behavior doesn't get rewarded, sorry to the students who were behaving but your classmates ruined it and maybe next time we can have a fun class.  I made them write about their parents and themselves.  I was mean. But hopefully they will have learned a lesson and will listen next time.  I feel bad at times since they're in school so much and don't have a lot of time to be kids but if they can't listen for a fun activity then I have no other choice.  The next class did the flag activity and they were much better, although they weren't quite as secretive with their maps as they should have been they were not holding them up for their partners to copy (or at least what I saw).

Thursday-That's today! I was super pumped to sleep in since I've been getting up early to go to breakfast.  I got to sleep til about 9:15 when Marsha, my co-teacher, called me and told me I'd be going to get my residency permit and visa sorted out at 1:20 today and my class at that time and the one after would be cancelled...So that's the story about this week's classes....

MJ's Speech

Tonight, I come before you less as an icon of pop (whatever that means
anyway), and more as an icon of a generation, a generation that no
longer knows what it means to be children.

Those of you who are familiar with the Jackson Five know that I began
performing at the tender age of five and that ever since then, I
haven't stopped dancing or singing. But while performing and making
music undoubtedly remain as some of my greatest joys, when I was young
I wanted more than anything else to be a typical little boy. I wanted
to build tree houses, have water balloon fights, and play hide and
seek with my friends. But fate had it otherwise and all I could do was
envy the laughter and playtime that seemed to be going on all around
me.

I used to think that I was unique in feeling that I was without a
childhood. I believed that indeed there were only a handful with whom
I could share those feelings. When I recently met with Shirley Temple
Black, the great child star of the 1930s and 40s, we said nothing to
each other at first, we simply cried together, for she could share a
pain with me that only others like my close friends Elizabeth Taylor
and McCauley Culkin know.

I would therefore like to propose tonight that we install in every
home a Children's Universal Bill of Rights, the tenets of which are:

1. The right to be loved without having to earn it

2. The right to be protected, without having to deserve it

3. The right to feel valuable, even if you came into the world with nothing

4. The right to be listened to without having to be interesting

5. The right to be read a bedtime story, without having to compete
with the evening news

6. The right to an education without having to dodge bullets at schools

7. The right to be thought of as adorable - (even if you have a face
that only a mother could love).

In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world
filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled
with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with
distrust, we must still dare to believe.

To all of you tonight who feel let down by your parents, I ask you to
let down your disappointment. To all of you tonight who feel cheated
by your fathers or mothers, I ask you not to cheat yourself further.
And to all of you who wish to push your parents away, I ask you to
extend you hand to them instead. I am asking you, I am asking myself,
to give our parents the gift of unconditional love, so that they too
may learn how to love from us, their children. So that love will
finally be restored to a desolate and lonely world.

And so ladies and gentlemen, I conclude my remarks tonight with faith,
joy and excitement.

From this day forward, may a new song be heard.

Let that new song be the sound of children laughing.

Let that new song be the sound of children playing.

Let that new song be the sound of children singing.

And let that new song be the sound of parents listening.

Together, let us create a symphony of hearts, marvelling at the
miracle of our children and basking in the beauty of love.

Let us heal the world and blight its pain.

Time flys!

So it's been over a week since my last journal entry and it's been 3 weeks that I've been in China! It's crazy to believe, it's gone by SO fast!  They had Teacher's Day Thursday and I got a lamp, flower, card, and a lil rabbit from my students, it was very sweet of them! Then, on Saturday, the school put on a dinner for us with SO much food! I had turtle, pig intestine, fish, my own crab, dumplings, and much more! The turtle was pretty good, I definitely did not like the pig intestine though!! Hopefully I'll get some pictures up soon.  They also had karaoke although I didn't sing, everyone that did was a great singer! It's probably a good thing I didn't ruin their streak. :)  Anyways, this week classes went better and I've learned what works and what doesn't work but I know I still have a lot to learn.  I have become somewhat of a mean teacher but that's what works best, I've also been bribing my students with candy...anything that gets them to talk is good.

This week I made pasta that I had bought from the grocery store and it was fabulous.  It was so different to eat with a fork! I'm pretty sure it was the first time I had since I arrived.  I really want to start cooking more or going to the Korean cafeteria.  We checked that out for the 1st time last week for dinner.  It was GREAT, I had some really good curry and a little bit of kim chi that was a bit too spicy for me.  Maddy and I also checked the breakfast out Friday morning, I got up at 6:45! Breakfast is early, but it was good too.  They had some rice porridge, what I like to call "pound cake", and some sesame bread type thing.  Hopefully I can get on their eating schedule. It was early to get up but I was definitely hungry for lunch, they usually eat lunch by noon or so then have dinner at 5 which is all a bit early for me but if I start the day early that should help regulate my eating time with theirs.  I'd really like to go to dinner more, it's pretty good and it saves me money to eat there.

We have a holiday coming up, October 1-8 but I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do yet.  Apparently traveling so so chaotic during that time so that makes it difficult to decide what to do, I want to do something though.  Who knows.  I also need to start planning what I will do on my break inbetween semesters.  I've been told we have from mid Jan to Feb. 25, and hopefully that's true! I know South Korea is in there somewhere and I can't wait!

Here's to getting in shape!

Madeline and I just got back from a GREAT run, we ran for about 30 minutes! It was a good way to work up some real sweat versus sweating while doing nothing because it's so hot out! We found there's an ecological garden that sounds like it would be amazing, hopefully we'll go tomorrow.  I feel so good right now and want to get back into shape and hope to go running at least a few times a week!

School today was alright, I've realized not to expect students to volunteer rather work my way around the room and leave them in their desks so that they will speak up and to the entire class.  Before I had them coming to the front of the room but then they would just talk to me and everyone else would talk as well. I'm still not quite sure how to keep them from talking while I'm talking...I need to figure out some really good interactive games I guess.

Well I got myself a new bag/purse today, I had my SIGG in mine and didn't thread the lid right so  a bunch of water leaked out and the bottom of my bag was sopping wet! I gave myself my own birthday gift and got a black and white polka dot across the chest bag, its much bigger than my other purse!

Anyways, Leah just called! :)

1st day of teaching

Whew, it's been a long day! Woke up this morning before the alarm went off-seems to be happening frequently here, so that would have been around idk 6 or something insane, haven't been sleeping the greatest lately...could be the weird dream I had where a live snake jumped on my head after I squished the guts out of a dead snake...So alarm was set for just before 8.  Anyways, showered, got ready, went down to breakfast and had some onion flatbread pizza type thing, some fluff bread (I'm sure there's a real name for it that I don't know, along with oh well pretty much every other thing I eat!), some rice porridge, and a strawberry type juice box.  All in all, pretty good, something in my stomach at least!  So I had to be at school at 9:30 this morning and we planned on walking since we realized it wasn't too far of a walk, we left at 9 and it was already warm out! Thankfully, it was only about a 15 minute walk! But of course by the time I got here (school) I was sweaty...ugh. Anyways, met up with my co-teacher, Marsha, Chinese native, who teaches some of the same classes but the actual grammar, reading, writing part of English.  She led me to this classroom and told me that it was my classroom for all my classes! Great but disappointing at the same time.  She gave me my own key for the room which makes me feel like I have some power and like a real teacher actually! But it's disappointing because the classroom lacks technological advances I feel could be helpful to enhancing the students learning.  I have a blackboard, that's it.  So much for the PPT I had made huh?!  But I made do with the blackboard, it was simply intros today, so I told them who I was, my love for sushi, favorite color purple, graduated from Uni of Iowa...asked them to discuss with a partner who they are, what hobbies they have, etc.  They then would come up to the front of the room and introduce each other.  This went fairly well although I had to pick students to come up since not everyone would volunteer.  Some of my classes we had leftover time so I tossed around a little football and had them tell me one fact about themselves, these ranged in "I have a father to I have 6 cousins to I am a boy" :)  We also played hangman and I asked students if they could go anywhere in the world where they would go.  Some responded with the US, not an immense amount, Japan, Australia, one said home so I asked why and he said "for a rest" poor kid!  Another said the park to play, another said Shanghai.  This really surprised me that they would choose somewhere so close and nothing exotic.  One child even said he wouldn't go anywhere!  The last class I had was Junior 3 Class 8, meaning last year of Junior so probably 9th grade, class 8 meaning highest level for that group.  They were quite the rowdy bunch, I had to tell them to be quiet a number of times with nothing accomplished in the end, even threatening to send them to the headmasters office!  So after my 1st day of teaching, I have mixed feelings.  Wiping of the blackboard today I just smiled to myself and felt like a real teacher, thought maybe this is something I'd like to do...but at the same time am disheartened by the whole situation-I am teaching roughly 500 kids. I teach 3-5 40 minute sections per day with 20-25 students in each.  I won't be able to know these kids, I won't even know all their names, I just hope they are able to get something useful out of their limited time with me and wish I get to know these students.

On a much brighter note, I now have a permanent (at least hopefully) place to live! We moved all our stuff in about noon, but could not unpack due to classes.  So later today I was able to. It's a nice place, I think it's 3 stories.  I'm on the 2nd floor room 203.  I have my own living room equipped with computer, desk, internet, HUGE shelving unit, full bathroom and good sized bedroom with an amazing air conditioner! It also has a TV, maybe full or queen bed-definitely not the most plush, I would love to get a memory foam or eggshell mattress...Also 2 nightstands and 2 large closets...such a waste I don't have more clothes to fill them!  Anyways, I'm exhausted and my back hurts.  I don't have class until 10:55 tomorrow but there is a loudspeaker that goes off so we'll see how well I'll sleep through it.  Good night!!!

8/25/09

Today was a busy day, Chinese lessons-which im having the time of my life with, talks from experienced teachers, the US consulate and we went downtown and walked around the Bund. We also went to Jujubee Tree, a vegetarian restaurant, and it was delicious, much better than last nights food! After that we saw the most amazing acrobatics show, it was mindblowing…anyways its late and my roommie is trying to sleep…I just wanted to get something in!

1st entry on plane to China

8/23/09 7:17 US time, 8:17 Shanghai time!

So I’m sitting on the plane, listening to Nickelback (of all bands), “If today was your last day” on their channels….saving up my iPhone power I guess…. I’m yawning but I really shouldn’t be tired. I’ve slept pretty much the entire flight with the exception of the last hour or so and waking up.  I’m not sure how well that’s going to treat me once we land, which is maybe an hour and a half from now, it’ll be 9:30 or so.  I didn’t even necessarily feel that tired but I know my body was exhausted. Having woke up at mmmm drink cart, sorry distraction…so woke up Friday morning around 9 and went to bed Thursday around 1:30 or so I hadn’t gone back to bed until the plane.  I slept from Cedar Rapids to Chicago but that’s only a mmm snack cart….haha so CID to ORD is maybe 40 minutes, maybe it’s a food cart, I smell food…I slept the flight from CID to ORD then landing in ORD found out that the plane had been delayed until 3:00 instead of the 10:34 it was supposed to be-frustrating as you can imagine since I landed before 8 AM! Within 15 minutes it was then delayed to 5:00, wooo hooo .  Didn’t honestly bother me too much I suppose, I did see if I could get upgraded of course not but instead I got a $15 food voucher so I parked myself at Chili’s for a bit, it was the only sit down that was relatively close and my bags were kinda heavy.  The $15 got me a mushroom swiss burger, fries, lemonade and a water to go pretty much, it was only $1.03 charged to me…So before I went to Chili’s I took a nap, it was maybe 2 hours, 10ish-12ish.  I found 4 open seats so that worked pretty well, I put my one bag under my knees and the other bag under my head, put my earbuds in and that was it…I think its breakfast they’re serving, I see yogurt so far…I’m hungry! The dinner when we first got on was eh…chicken, rice, veggies, although the chicken was chewy/fatty at times so I didn’t eat a couple pieces, the salad was good, it was sesame ginger dressing and some good green pieces…”turkey sandwich or veggies w/ noodles, arrival time 9:45”  def getting the turkey sandwich!  So it was okay food, a really good oatmeal raison cookie thing but yeah other than that it was no Osaka sushi that’s for sure…Its’s food though!  The food cart’s almost too me….yum yum…. 7:29 US time

Yo Jess,

I checked out your pics from the vacation. Way cool! Is that temple that you visited a Buddhist temple or just a historical site? I think my favorite pics are the ones on the mountainside with the blue and violet lights. Either it was morning or evening. Very beautiful either way. I sent some time in Wuxi also, but I visited a park where they reenacted famous historical battles on horseback. Good times. See you soon. I’m thinking about heading your way this weekend if y’all are down.
