Growing Serving Loving

Family Purpose

As a family we are dedicated to Growing, Serving and Loving in these ways:

Growing together as a family and individually as children of God.

Serving our Lord above all else.

Loving everyone God places in our lives.

Zechariah 4:6

6 So he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty.

Jeremiah 29:11

11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
   and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Philippians 4:6

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Whats happening in our day to day lives.

I am enjoying your site, your comments, the wonderful pictures, and I especially enjoyed the gypsy story though I would caution you about perpetuating stereotypes.

What a great website you've created!  Nice job.  Now, the details on diapers and washing off poo were great, but I like some of the other details on your blog better.  Love, Lynda

Hannah and Oliver were discharged today, both doing
well, Hannah wiped out, Gary and I wiped out (labor
and delivery and me staying in the hospital with
Hannah and Oliver meant minimal sleep, Gary taking
John to the hospital and spending several hours
there, and John, very ill, disappointed in missing
out on the bonding that should be happening, today
was their wedding anniversary, father's day and
Oliver 3 days old, so he missed out on bringing
Oliver home, introducing him to the dogs, and his new
life adventure.  He is quite ill, a blockage in the
same place as in March, but not resolving nearly as
quickly.

So Hannah and Oliver are doing well, figuring out
each other's cues.
We're tired but thrilled with Oliver and deeply
hoping things turn around for John, looking forward
to Hilary's arrival tomorrow a.m.  Baby doc
appointment tomorrow afternoon, so a wipe out day for
Hannah, and we'll also be visiting John.  Oliver has
stepped up to the plate and daily works hard on
improving his breast feeding/latch game.

All will be well.

Things are going well.  Oliver last night got the
drift that a
little sleep for parents is helpful.  John
is looking a lot better, ravenously hungry, because
just how filling is chicken broth?  Hannah is getting
perkier every day, wearing her own jeans, getting a
little cheek color back, is now 35, or, as she puts
it, "advanced maternal age".  I think it's likely
Gary and I will leave tomorrow.  This precious new
family needs to establish themselves and that's
easier done with privacy.  We'll see how tonight
goes.  But we're only an hour away.

Just so you know how utterly adorable he still is,
I've included some pictures.

I like the idea of a family reunion; It would be nice
to have Harri and Les's kids Colt, Tim, Greg &
Christine, their baby due 10/31/2009 and  (don't have
their emails--but Harri can you add it to the mass mails)

I personally would prefer a lodgish type place.  Long
ago we went to Kalaloch and rented a couple of those
bigger cabins--that approach worked pretty well.
People could handle their own breakfast and lunch,
there are restaurants for dinner. or one can order
in, i.e. catering.

There are cabins also at LaPush.  There are rustic
cabins LochAerie resort on Lake Quinault.

A pretty pricey place is Sleeping Lady which has
fabulous food and individual cabins.  The food is
served family style, there are meeting rooms, it's a
little eastern so the weather is good, there's room
for hikes, biking, it's a lovely setting.

Fort Worden has those big wonderful houses that hold
a lot of people, it would probably take two or three.
It's fun to play in the bunkers, Port Townsend is
nearby and fun to visit.

I will try to come wherever and whenever.  I prefer a
lounging atmosphere with lots of opportunity for
interaction, altogether as well as informal.

Make sure everyone's emails go to everyone.

I don't want to spend a lot of time cooking and
cleaning.  We could stay at a monastery and fast.
But I do enjoy eating, especially with friends and
relatives.

If we were to cruise in Alaska
again I want to go one way and visit Denali at
beginning or end.  When thinking about cruise prices,
there are families
of 4 or 6 and you have to do the math, such as 6
times $800 equals $5400.
Just over $100 a day is great for 2, but times 4 or 6
can be daunting.

I agree that a place where we can gather
is essential and I think the porch at the National
Park Inn where we’ve
had some good times would be a bit cold in June, for
instance. J  Feeding this many
people would be a lot of work unless everyone is
willing to pitch in - think
about the clean up!  So some sort of conference place
with meals and
central lounge would be desirable for me.

I’ve been to CAL POLY Pomona a couple of times
for a scrapbooking retreat.  They have a retreat
center complete with motel
type rooms, a dining room with 3 meals a day and
different size conference
rooms.  But we need a place like that set on a shore
with something
besides bad air outside.  Cal Poly has cute animals!
J  that is, beef and
lamb on the hoof.

How about if everyone finds a price for
the place they think would be most fun and
accommodate the crowd the best and
get back to us with a price.

Hi everybody! Greetings from Cambridge,
England! Some
random

thoughts regarding a potential reunion:

Peter and I are happy to go with the flow, but we are
not campers. We

don’t own tents or other camping equipment. We have a
strong

preference for accommodations with real beds, hot
showers, and flush

toilets.

Tom’s idea of multiple RV rentals is intriguing. We
have never stayed

in one, but if our criteria above were met, we would
consider it.

Having arranged family reunions in the past, I want
to remind everyone

that although big group meals are lovely, I have
found them extremely

difficult to arrange. So keep in mind that some sort
of venue with

all meals included is infinitely easier to organize
(e.g., cruises,

ranches, lodges, or camps with a meal plan).

One issue I have with Ocean
Shores is that dogs are
allowed on that

beach, and I’ve seen people there let their dogs use
the beach as a

public toilet. So if families with children are
imagining their

little ones building sand castles on the beach, they
might want to

reconsider. Here’s an article I read from today’s
International

Herald Tribune on the topic:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/21/health/research/21haza.html

Those of you interested in an Alaska
cruise might check out the

options and prices at http://www.vacationstogo.com.
I’ve never

purchased from this website, but I find it a useful
tool to see what

the going rates are for different itineraries. For
example, deal

#27922 is a 7 day Alaska cruise on the
Sapphire Princess, round trip

from Seattle,
with a starting price of $749 per person. This is a 5

star ship. So for $107 per day you get a room, all
meals and snacks,

and transportation to and from Alaska.
Peter and I were on this ship

for 12 days last year in Australia
and New Zealand
with our daughters,

son-in-law, and grandson. Our 2008 Christmas card
photo was taken by

one of their ship photographers. Our grandson was 7
at the time, and

he LOVED their kids club. He begged to go to the kids
club every day,

and preferred it to any of the excursions we took him
on. Celebrity

also has a sailing on June 11 for $749. Carnival has
one for $509.

There are lots of choices. If we go this route, I’d
probably also

check with Costco. I have booked a cruise through
Costco before. And

if we book as a group, we can probably get 1 person
free for every 8

paid, or something like that, or a category or two
upgrade, or free

travel insurance…

If it were up to me, I’d rather do a one-way Alaska
cruise starting or

ending in Anchorage
(Seward). That way, those of us who are

interested could stay a few extra days and take a
pre- or post-cruise

trip to Denali National Park.

Peter and I will be on the Oregon
Coast for a conference in
October.

We’re staying at the Salishan Lodge. I don’t remember
the conference

rate, but I think it included meals. I can check when
I get home.

With a group of about 30, we might be able to
negotiate group rates at

a number of different venues.

I agree with Lynda that June might be a little early
for Ocean
Shores,

and it might be too early for Alaska
too. I think June is the best

month in Southern California. July, August,
and September are better

in Washington.

Does anybody have an interest in a train trip across
Canada, or Amtrak

along the West Coast, sleeper cars and all? I haven't
priced it out,

but that might be fun.

I feel like I’m at Hogwart’s (for those of you who
have read Harry

Potter). Here’s where we're having dinner tonight:

Yes to this.

I'm still rooting for San Juan Island, Ocean Shores, Yachats, Yosemite, Alaska,  or Italy, not in that order.  But I'm ready to order.

I could handle Sleeping Lady, wherever that (she) is, Fort Worden (was that for Worden George ...?)  or P. Townsend but could use just a tad more info.  Tyvm. : )

Regarding States Inn and Ranch on San Juan Island:

Possible number of participants:  33 give or take

Betty, Ray, Shirley, Rosanne, Gary, Lynda, Liz, Peter, Tom, Gretchen,
Harolee, Les

Andy, Karin, Meredith, Kristian, Karen, Jon, Hannah, John, Hilary, Tim, Jon,
Colt

Mikaela, Madeline, Abigail, Aislinn, Micah, Nathan, Emma, Audrey, Oliver

States Inn & Ranch looks great.  They say they can accommodate up to 28
persons.  Adding up their max occupancy comes to 30.  Breakfast comes with
the rooms, lunches and dinners can be arranged for additional $$.  The best
thing to do would be to talk with them and see what can be negotiated
regarding price for all rooms plus meals for a set number of days - and we
also have to have in mind how many days.  To minimize cost, I would suggest
3 nights, dinner on arrival day, 3 meals other two days and only breakfast
on checkout morning.  That said, some people might want to stay longer.

Using listed prices on web page, and assuming everyone will participate
(which is unlikely), the total cost for the group looks like:

I estimate all rooms at listed prices and our group of adult/child mix:
$1610 per night - rooms and breakfast.  Keep in mind adding lunch and dinner
will increase the cost.

The logistics of how to fit everyone, and have it not be overwhelming
cost-wise for families with children, would be a challenge.  I would be
willing to give it a try if the majority of people are interested in this
venue.  If every person listed above actually came, which would be a
miracle, we would have to talk the owners/operators into allowing an extra
child under 13 in two of the rooms and be willing to put a roll away in
another room to accommodate all single adults.  I actually have worked this
scenario out on paper.  Keep in mind though, that at face value, the people
with more children could be paying way more per adult because they need the
larger, hence pricier, rooms.

All that said I would really love to go here, on San Juan Island.  If there
is interest, then next step is to talk with someone at the ranch.

I believe Ray is still looking into the Oregon coast.  I have no negative
feelings about anything suggested so far.  I really like the pricing at the
Banff place Gretchen and Tom came up with.  I can go with chilly better than
hot!

I believe an Alaska cruise with Denali Park, even though it is calling my
name, is probably impractical for a part of this group.  Perhaps we could
get those interested in giving a cruise a go again together in 2011?

One other thought.  I know of a conference center run by the State of
California Parks system with motel type rooms and gathering rooms and all
meals in a dining room.  It is called Asilomar.  It is in Pacific Grove
which is between Monterrey and Carmel, California on the coast at the lower
end of Monterrey Bay (where John Denver died)  It is in one of the most
beautiful areas of the Central Coast.  The scenic drive down highway 1 past
Big Sur and San Simeon is just south.  In San Simeon there is a beach with a
very large colony of elephant seals.

Just thought I'd throw it out there with the other ideas.

Although I love Yosemite, I think it would be difficult to plan for so large
a group, and hopefully we will have a large group!

First order of business:  determine whether the last week of June is the agreed upon calendar.  I was one of a chorus of people cautioning about cool temperatures in the PNW at this time period.  We have wonderful suggestions, a plethora or venues.  We need to know if we'll be meeting in early spring or late summer, folks!

Hi all!  This is a Google docs application which I just tried to share with everyone.  The hangup is:  you need to be signed up for Google apps.  Oh, well.  If this were the case, the spreadsheet could be viewed, shared and edited by everyone.
Here is the link:

Check it out, let me know if you can access and if you would like to add data. Thanks!

Tim was able to view.  The new link below should allow you to view AND edit.  Don't try this unless you have a Google account because it won't work.  Indicate automatic save.

The last week of June next year was the time certain people said they are able to participate.  I don’t want to do anything anywhere hot and I know Betty doesn’t want hot either.  So I would prefer not to go anywhere unless it is somewhere like in July or August.  I was talking with a friend last evening who was on an cruise two weeks ago and the daily temperatures were in the mid to high 80s.  Cool is a perfect hiking condition also.  The trick is to have an indoor, warm enough, big enough place for people to gather.

Our parameters seem to be:  Meals, or at least breakfast and dinner, included; gathering spot like a lounge or great room; and as inexpensive as possible so the most people can participate.

Speaking for Ray and I and our kids, the income of our four families is down from 2 to 3 years ago and in the present economic environment will not recover any time soon.  I suspect that may be the case for some others on our list also.  So if we’re serious about doing this next year, cost is a huge consideration at least for a segment of the family.

There are rustic
cabins LochAerie resort on .

A pretty pricey place is Sleeping Lady which has
fabulous food and individual cabins. The food is
served family style, there are meeting rooms, it's a
little eastern so the weather is good, there's room
for hikes, biking, it's a lovely setting.

has those big wonderful houses that hold
a lot of people, it would probably take two or three.

But I do enjoy eating, especially with friends and
relatives.

If we were to cruise in
again I want to go one way and visit at
beginning or end. When thinking about cruise prices,
there are families
of 4 or 6 and you have to do the math, such as 6
times $800 equals $5400.
Just over $100 a day is great for 2, but times 4 or 6
can be daunting.

I agree that a place where we can gather
is essential and I think the porch at the National
Park Inn where we’ve
had some good times would be a bit cold in June, for
instance. J Feeding this many
people would be a lot of work unless everyone is
willing to pitch in - think
about the clean up! So some sort of conference place
with meals and
central lounge would be desirable for me.

I’ve been to CAL POLY a couple of times
for a scrapbooking retreat. They have a retreat
center complete with motel
type rooms, a dining room with 3 meals a day and
different size conference
rooms. But we need a place like that set on a shore
with something
besides bad air outside. Cal Poly has cute animals!
J that is, beef and
lamb on the hoof.

How about if everyone finds a price for
the place they think would be most fun and
accommodate the crowd the best and
get back to us with a price.

Hi everybody! Greetings from ,
! Some
random

thoughts regarding a potential reunion:

Peter and I are happy to go with the flow, but we are
not campers. We

don’t own tents or other camping equipment. We have a
strong

preference for accommodations with real beds, hot
showers, and flush

toilets.

Tom’s idea of multiple RV rentals is intriguing. We
have never stayed

in one, but if our criteria above were met, we would
consider it.

Having arranged family reunions in the past, I want
to remind everyone

that although big group meals are lovely, I have
found them extremely

difficult to arrange. So keep in mind that some sort
of venue with

all meals included is infinitely easier to organize
(e.g., cruises,

ranches, lodges, or camps with a meal plan).

One issue I have with Ocean
Shores is that dogs are
allowed on that

beach, and I’ve seen people there let their dogs use
the beach as a

public toilet. So if families with children are
imagining their

little ones building sand castles on the beach, they
might want to

reconsider. Here’s an article I read from today’s
International

Herald Tribune on the topic:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/21/health/research/21haza.html

Those of you interested in an
cruise might check out the

options and prices at http://www.vacationstogo.com.
I’ve never

purchased from this website, but I find it a useful
tool to see what

the going rates are for different itineraries. For
example, deal

#27922 is a 7 day cruise on the
Sapphire Princess, round trip

from ,
with a starting price of $749 per person. This is a 5

star ship. So for $107 per day you get a room, all
meals and snacks,

and transportation to and from .
Peter and I were on this ship

for 12 days last year in
and
with our daughters,

son-in-law, and grandson. Our 2008 Christmas card
photo was taken by

one of their ship photographers. Our grandson was 7
at the time, and

he LOVED their kids club. He begged to go to the kids
club every day,

and preferred it to any of the excursions we took him
on. Celebrity

also has a sailing on June 11 for $749. Carnival has
one for $509.

There are lots of choices. If we go this route, I’d
probably also

check with Costco. I have booked a cruise through
Costco before. And

if we book as a group, we can probably get 1 person
free for every 8

paid, or something like that, or a category or two
upgrade, or free

travel insurance…

If it were up to me, I’d rather do a one-way
cruise starting or

ending in
(Seward). That way, those of us who are

interested could stay a few extra days and take a
pre- or post-cruise

trip to .

Peter and I will be on the
Coast for a conference in
October.

We’re staying at the Salishan Lodge. I don’t remember
the conference

rate, but I think it included meals. I can check when
I get home.

With a group of about 30, we might be able to
negotiate group rates at

a number of different venues.

I agree with Lynda that June might be a little early
for Ocean
Shores,

and it might be too early for
too. I think June is the best

month in . July, August,
and September are better

in .

Does anybody have an interest in a train trip across
, or Amtrak

along the West Coast, sleeper cars and all? I haven't
priced it out,

but that might be fun.

I feel like I’m at Hogwart’s (for those of you who
have read Harry

Potter). Here’s where we're having dinner tonight:

Greetings, Everyone!
You can view the spreadsheet using the links I sent.  If you have a Google account of some sort, you already have permission to access and add to the chart and can likely edit directly from one of the Google links I sent earlier.  There are no elite groups here -- I have not limited user participation.  You may not even need a Google account to edit, but I'm not sure about that.  At the very least, you need to be able to get to the document on Google either using the links or going through Google itself.
Please feel free to access!  If you need a little encouragement:  go to Google.com.  Up at the top of the user bar, select "More," go to "documents" and you should then see the document.  If not, let me know.  Thanks!   The greater the participation, the happier I am.  Yesterday, three people were adding data or making modifications simultaneously across about 2500 miles. Makes my technologist self joyful.
One final request:  no hacking, please.
Love,
Lynda

Aha, I already had a member ID with google, but the link from Lynda’s email took me to a pdf version of the spread sheet and I was unable to type into it.  The link at the bottom of this email took me into the doc as a spreadsheet and I can add information now.

Regarding States Inn and Ranch on San Juan Island:

Possible number of participants:  33 give or take

States Inn & Ranch looks great.  They say they can
accommodate up to 28
persons.  Adding up their max occupancy comes to 30.
Breakfast comes with
the rooms, lunches and dinners can be arranged for
additional $$.  The best
thing to do would be to talk with them and see what
can be negotiated
regarding price for all rooms plus meals for a set
number of days - and we
also have to have in mind how many days.  To minimize
cost, I would suggest
3 nights, dinner on arrival day, 3 meals other two
days and only breakfast
on checkout morning.  That said, some people might
want to stay longer.

Using listed prices on web page, and assuming
everyone will participate
(which is unlikely), the total cost for the group
looks like:

I estimate all rooms at listed prices and our group
of adult/child mix:
$1610 per night - rooms and breakfast.  Keep in mind
adding lunch and dinner
will increase the cost.

The logistics of how to fit everyone, and have it not
be overwhelming
cost-wise for families with children, would be a
challenge.  I would be
willing to give it a try if the majority of people
are interested in this
venue.  If every person listed above actually came,
which would be a
miracle, we would have to talk the owners/operators
into allowing an extra
child under 13 in two of the rooms and be willing to
put a roll away in
another room to accommodate all single adults.  I
actually have worked this
scenario out on paper.  Keep in mind though, that at
face value, the people
with more children could be paying way more per adult
because they need the
larger, hence pricier, rooms.

All that said I would really love to go here, on San
Juan Island.  If there
is interest, then next step is to talk with someone
at the ranch.

I believe Ray is still looking into the Oregon coast.
I have no negative
feelings about anything suggested so far.  I really
like the pricing at the
Banff place Gretchen and Tom came up with.  I can go
with chilly better than
hot!

I believe an Alaska cruise with Denali Park, even
though it is calling my
name, is probably impractical for a part of this
group.  Perhaps we could
get those interested in giving a cruise a go again
together in 2011?

Hi, everyone.  Karen Osborne is thinking about creating a blog for our reunion planning.  On the blog we could embed the chart, post pictures and converse.  Good idea?  She says she can create one with no password required.

Also, Tim thinks that price sounds like the limiting factor for many -- so getting firm price limits might be the best next step for the options we have listed.  In some cases, costs have been posted, but we probably need a bit more detailed planning about the actual accommodations and variant possibilities as well as meal options if meals are not included.  Please contribute data for your suggested venues if you haven't already.  Details, please, when you get the opportunity.

Many thanks, everyone!

Love, Lynda

Hi all,

We go to Sunriver, OR, near Bend, almost every year.  We’ve stayed in vacation rental homes ranging from 3-5 bedrooms, depending upon how many come.  We have to do meal planning and preparation, which is manageable for 5-10 people.  But last count, we were talking about accommodating 37 people:

Betty, Ray, Shirley, Rosanne, Gary, Lynda, Liz,
Peter, Tom, Gretchen,
Harolee, Les, Greg, Christine, Janalyne

Andy, Karin, Meredith, Kristian, Karen, Jon, Hannah,
John, Hilary, Tim, Jon, Colt

Mikaela, Madeline, Abigail, Aislinn, Micah, Nathan,
Emma, Audrey, Oliver, and baby due 10/31

My favorite home in Sunriver is a 5 bedroom with a big playroom (#3 Hummingbird Lane).  But finding 5, 6, 7 bedroom homes is harder than finding 3 bedroom ones.  It seems to me we would need a minimum of four homes with 4 or 5 bedrooms each to accommodate 37.  Getting them next to each other, or even on the same street would be nearly impossible.  Organizing communal meals for 37 would be daunting (for me at least).

I have never booked these Sunriver homes, but my understanding is that there is a cutoff date around June 14 where before the homes are cheaper and after you pay the summer rates.  So should we go this route, we may want to take that into consideration.  Also, many if not most homes require a weekly rental.  There is also a cleaning fee.  Still, this option is much more affordable than staying in a hotel.  This year the home we stayed in was booked through ReMax Sunset Realty.  www.SunriverLodging.com  541-593-5018 or 800 541-1756.  We’ve also stayed in homes booked through ResortQuest.

I’m not advocating for Bend or Sunriver, so I don’t want to do the research for it.  But I’m offering up the above because I’ve stayed in the area many times.  If I were to do the research for it, I would start by calling ReMax.

Love, Liz

P.S.  Did a reunion website ever get set up?

Hi all,

2 weekends ago we Tom, Tim, and I traveled to the San Juan's in part to escape the heat.  We visited the States Inn on San Juan Island and West Beach Resort on Orcas, two of the choices noted on the spread sheet for possible family reunion sites.  Tim posted some photos on his flickr account if you are interested.  We had the privilege of having the "J" pod of Orcas travel in front of our ferry boat , which came to a standstill in the waters closer to the Anacortes side, so the pod could travel through safely.  We saw about 15 of them; quiet an experience!

We found that the States Inn would be $1400 per night for max of 24 persons.  The price only includes breakfast.  The family run place was small, but quaint, and would provide good home cooking.  However it was basically off the road in a pasture with not much to do unless you drove to other places on the island.  Other meals could be provided but at a cost of $18-25 per person for dinners.  So we concluded it would not be worth the cost.

The West Beach Resort on Orcas Island has cabins and the option of tent or RV camping adjacent to the cabins.  By late June they require a weeks stay,  so the cost of cabins might be prohibitive.   Beach front cabins which typically are 2 bedroom with 4-6 max persons would be anywhere from $189-209 nightly, so for a week $1323-1463. The Farmhouse cabin which holds 7 persons and has a large gathering area would be $289 per night, or $2023 for the week.  It may be booked already.  When I check the day prior to arrival it was still available the 3rd week of June.   RV camping is $38 per night and camping in tents $33 nightly.   Cabins are all equipped with kitchens so cooking could be done by various families.   The place would be wonderful for a reunion but the cost, due to the weekly rental requirement plus the cost of travel by ferry,  seems out of a comfortable price range.

So we propose something else...

I have been looking at Bend, Oregon and will report back after I have made phone calls,  but it looks like larger home rentals would be feasible at a much lower cost.  Plus the area has activities galore for all ages:  shopping, museums, white water rafting, canoeing/kayaking, parks, hiking etc.  It also would be closer for the family traveling up from CA.  I will pass on any information soon.

Love, Gretchen
