This was a secluded campsite along the Skyland Horse Trail in Shenandoah National Park May 2012
Sunrise Ocracoke Island
After our backpacking trip in Shenandoah Park,we traveled south to the Outer Banks of NC via ferry. We camped on Ocracoke Island here and rose early the next morning to see the sunrise.
Kayaking in NC
Near Duck,NC,we kayaked 3 miles across Currituck Sound out to Monkey Island and back. Wes is a good kayaking dog!
Evening White Sands National Monument
On our fall trip 2012,White Sands was amongst our early destinations. The sand is a dazzling pure white. One has the illusion of hiking in snow, save that it was over 90 degrees F!
Hermit Trail Grand Canyon
The Grand canyon was our 2nd major stop of the fall 12 trip and I spent 8 days hiking various inner Canyon trails. I began my descent into the Canyon via the rugged Hermit Trail.
Wesley hikes the Rim Trail
Dogs aren`t allowed below the Canyon Rim,so Wes had to be boarded while I was backpacking down there. After my hike,he was happy to hike the rim trail with me. This trail runs from Grand Canyon Village 6 miles out to Hermit`s Rest and back.
High Sierra Lake--Yosemite National Park
We traveled on to California after our Grand Canyon hiking and explored the trails in Yosemite National Park. This particular trail led to the sunrise high sierra camp.
Sunrise High Sierra Camp
The actual campsite was a few miles past the alpine lakes. It overlooked a high sierra meadow.
Wesley at the base of Half Dome
A long trail led past vernal and nevada falls to the base of Half Dome. We were about 8559 ft elevation at this point. The sheer face of Half Dome soared several hundred feet higher still but required climbing via cables so not possible with a dog. We could gaze down the sheer granite cliffs to Yosemite Valley far below.
Wesley at Tomales Point
After Yosemite,we journeyed on to the Pacific coast of Calif. Here we hiked the Tomales point trail in Point Reyes National Seashore. The trail led 4 miles out to this rocky ocean overlook.
Wesley at Tomales Point
Leaving California,we traversed Donner Pass via I-80. An early Oct snowfall dropped a few inches here and we hiked the roads and trails around Donner Lake.
Murphy Trail Canyonlands Utah
We passed thru Utah headed back east and hiked this trail in Canyonlands National Park. We reached this plateau overlooking some canyons via many long switchbacks from the mesa above.
Grand View Point
Grand View point lies at the end of the road in the Island in the Sky unit of Canyonlands. A 1 mile trail continues on along the mesa rim. We had hiked down there the previous day on the Murphy Trail.
Snow in the Great Sand Dunes
It was early Nov when we hiked in the Great Sand Dunes National Park,Colorado. A light snow had dusted the dunes and it was super windy on the dune summits. Winds were gale force up here!
Hiking around the Sand Dunes
The sand ramp trail extends for many miles along the base of the dunes. It affords nice views of the dunefield as well as the Sangre De Christo mts.

planet below the suwannee
We visited my sister down in FL at trips end for Thanksgiving. during our visit,we hiked some sections of the Florida Trail. This section ran along the Suwannee River. I took an underwater shot from the bank and a water droplet on the lens created this effect. It gives the surreal illusion of a planet floating in space!
