jpamusher`s travel pix - 911 - OBX Trip`s End
I had to pass by the Outer Banks of NC as we journeyed home from Florida. On a last minute impulse,I decided to stop off and do a bit of hiking there in early Dec since the weather was still warm!
OBX Trip`s End
Passing by Santee State Park in SC on the way home,we stopped to hike a 7.5 mile bike trail that winds thru the forest along the shore of Lake Marion. I-95 crosses this large lake.

We had to cross Pamlico sound on a ferry to reach the Outer Banks of NC. The metal canisters hold compressed air life vessels.

Open Ponds trail
This was a 9 mile round trip hike from the Hatteras lighthouse to Frisco campground.
Hiking the Open Ponds trail
Beach near the Frisco campground
We hiked from the lighthouse to the campground. long boardwalks crossed the dunes to reach the beach. We arrived in late afternoon. Darkness fell as we were hiking back to the lighthouse, but I had a headlamp.
The next day,we walked the beach from the Hatteras lighthouse to Diamond Shoals. This is the point of land that sticks out furthest into the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Hatteras.
Walking the shoreline at Cape Hatteras
once past the area where beach driving was allowed,we had the coast all to ourselves. It was early Dec but temps still reached 70 degrees!
Sea turtle carcass
open wound marks are visible. the poor creature may have fallen victim to a shark.
Saw this small sand shark as we hiked the shore. He was alive in shallow water when I first spotted him but had expired on the hike back.
I flipped him over for this shot.
Surf near Oregon Inlet
On our last day in the Outer Banks,we walked the shoreline for a few miles to the rock jetty at Oregon Inlet. This was the end of a great trip!
