Hiking the Tonto towards Monument Creek
night 2 in Grand Canyon was spent out on the Tonto plateau a short ways east of Monument Creek. Views were better here and several other noisy campers were back at Monument Creek.
view from the Tonto
as I hiked towards Indian Garden campground on day 3,the Tonto trail skirted the edge of the plateau in places affording dramatic views down to the Colorado river.
reflections in Salt Creek
I paused to rest at the Salt Creek campsite mid morning. There was a trickle of water here. continuing east on the Tonto trail,I met a hiker headed here for the night.

Hikers at Plateau point
I was supposed to camp at Indian Garden for night 3 but decided to hunt down a more secluded spot. Hiking east on the Tonto towards the S Kaibab trail I looked back to glimpse these hikers at Plateau Point. Digital zoom was used so the pix resolution suffers somewhat. Plateau point is reached from the Indian Garden camp via a side trail.
Camping at Pipe spring
approximately halfway between the Bright Angel and S Kaibab trails. There was a small spring here and a nice level spot beside the trail to camp. Nicer to listen to the silence of the desert instead of other campers!

Tipoff point S Kaibab trail
Around 10 am on day 4 I reached the S Kaibab trail. This was the first time I had ever hiked from the Bright Angel to the S Kaibab via the Tonto. This spot is called the Tipoff and has restrooms and emergency phone.

Descending the South Kaibab
Leaving the Tipoff point,I began the final descent down to the Colorado River and Bright Angel campground. Bright angel was the only developed campground that I used in my 7 nights down there.

Silver Bridge and Bright Angel campground
Silver bridge spans the Colorado at center. Grove of trees behind rock outcrop at right is the Bright Angel campground.
Rafts docked at the boat beach. Love the umbrella! I reached the beach after crossing the bridge. a trail leads back to Bright Angel camp and Phantom Ranch beyond.
