Welcome to our family website! Be sure to check out all the cool stuff. We've posted photo albums, blog entries, and a couple videos. Jonathan has his own page with pictures and videos too!
Hey y'all!
We had a fantastic weekend. Jeff came home from the business trip to FL on Friday and we had a blast welcoming him home! We went to Atchison both Friday and Saturday. We thought the fireworks were going to be on Friday night, but were mistaken and had to go back Saturday. We had a great time both days. Jonathan isn't in most of these photos because he just wasn't wanting to be. At the wild flower meadow, he was too nervous about the bees and getting stung. He was stung by a wasp last week. And in the water photos, he just didn't want to get wet. I hope you all enjoy our photos of this great weekend!
I hope to get the pictures Jeff took in FL posted soon, but it's late and I must be getting to bed. We start our first week of 2nd grade tomorrow! Adie will be in pre-K/Kindergarten (we'll see what grade she's in in a couple years maybe). Ha! July is such a fun month!
Blessings to you all! We love you!

Yes, I put quotes around break. I just don't think we could call this last week a break! There was still much learning involved, even though we didn't crack open the school books. We went to the zoo, nature centers, the lake, Powell Gardens, our co-op, Jonathan's science class, and a Dairy Farm field trip! This week was so busy but so much fun!
The dairy farm was great. We got to see the whole process of how milk gets from the cow to the jugs in our grocery stores! I was unable to snap a lot of photos, only a couple, it was so crowded and holding on to Alex was quite a challenge. We got to taste some interesting flavors of milk - banana, strawberry, orange, root beer, and chocolate. The milk was great! No growth hormones, and fresh from that morning! It really was a lovely day.
Powell Gardens was great, it wasn't full of flowers yet, but it sure was a pleasant walk. And the lake was beautiful.
Jonathan is enjoying his science class (home school science lab at a local nature center). So far they've learned about eggs and compasses. There are three more weeks for this one.
I took Adie and Alex to the zoo during Jonathan's class and that was fun! I had Alex in a back-pack and Adie in the stroller (poor little ladie gets so tired walking the zoo). We have a membership so it's nice to go and just see a few things and then know we can come back anytime we want for free!
Our bird feeder is great. I believe we will have to get some more as time goes on. The whole family is getting a lot out of watching all that's going on. We do have a theif of a squirl coming along these days, so we'll have to figure that out. And this week, a new bird decided to grace us with his presence. It looked like a sparrow, but red like raspberry juice! I looked it up in the field guide and discovered that it was a male Purple Finch! I've never seen one before and they truly are beautiful!
This afternoon, the weather has been so enjoyable. the temperatures are in the 60s after so long. They will drop again at the end of this week, so it's been a must to treasure a sneak peek of spring!
Today, after lunch (which Jonathan and Adie ate outside) we spent a couple hours in the sunshine (Adie is still soaking in the fresh air). They both imagine so well. Today, the following was Jonathan's adventure, which I wrote down while he was relaying this to me:
"I am in Oklahoma in the country and I am fishing for fish to make fish stew. There are lots of rivers around. I'm fishing for dinner. Oh, I got a bite, it's a big one! The rivers are real narrow. Well, we came on the turnpike to River Creek. We were trying to catch a skunk, which I smell right now. I hope to catch him tonight. Sometimes some fishermen sleep in the sun. I'm fishing for a monarch fish (I'm pretending there is one). Where we are, the people who own River Creek want us to use a tent. They want us to do a stake out so if we hear the skunk trap, we'll know the skunk is there. We couldn't hear it in the cabin. When I tap something, it sounds like a drum. I tap it to get someone's attention. We are trapping the baby skunk. When we trap it, we'll take it to it's mom. The person trapping the mom is going on a hike."
This was just too cute to not share!
Jonathan is growing in his reading, it's getting better and better everyday. Adie is picking up sounds of several letters. In math, Jonathan is adding two-digit numbers, subtracting, learning about the hundreds, knows all the coins and is getting better at counting cents, and has begun to learn $$. Adie can count to 40 and is learning 1+1. Our science right now is using water and we've done a few projects that have been simply exciting.
Watching nature has been great, yes even in the dead of winter - nature science is still alive! With the move to our new house, we have found several birds outside our dining window. Our love of birds has sparked and this week we got our first field guide! We found the cardinals we've been seeing outside our window and when we went to the lake on Monday, Jonathan identified the geese we saw, using the field guide. There is much to discover about the world of birds! In our out-loud reading time, we've started the Little House series and the entire family loves it. Even Alex seems to settle down to listen for a few seconds now and then.
Our co-op has been meeting once a week during the school year and that continues to be an activity looked forward to. In March, I will be teaching the pre-school class about the solar system. That should be fun!
Jonathan continues to excell in his fiddle lessons down-town. This Friday night, our other home school group is participating in an Arts Festival and Jonathan will be playing "Lightly Row." Yesterday, his instructor told me that a recital will be sometime at the end of May.
Basketball is fun. Two games ago, Jonathan made two scores! We have seen a definite improvement in his running and all around playing of the game. There are four more games, the season has just gone too fast.
Adie loves the outdoors. Every chance she gets, she want to be out in the fresh air. She enjoys digging in the dirt, pretending she's on a horse, camping, collecting rocks and sticks. Just a little while ago, I went upstairs and found a pile of sticks and rocks next to her bed. A precious collection, best left un-disturbed.
Alexander loves his brother. He often wants to climb up into his lap and cuddle. He laughs at everything. He soaks in whatever we are doing, everyday. He seems to want to see how things work, showing a curiosity of everything. His imagination is also bursting. Sunday night, while we were at our life group Bible study, he was going around handing things to people, but there was nothing in his hand. He walked up to the coffee table, acted at though he was picking up something small with pinched fingers, then would make his way to us and squiggle his fingers around in the palm of our hands for a second or two, then say thank you ("taa-doo!").
What a joy to watch the growth of a child, his knowledge and playing of that knowledge. May we all get as much joy out of a full life as a child.
We had a wonderful week. Instead of trying to catch everyone up on everything we've done this year (that would take a novel!), I'm going to just start where we are at and continue posting pictures that we've taken throughout the year. If you want to know more about something you see, don't hesitate to ask!
Each day, we follow about the same routine. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are mostly the same. Wednesdays we do math in the morning and then head off to our co-op.
Each of the four days, our days usually go as follows:
Bible: We work on memorizing a Proverb each week and he copies it onto a worksheet (a few words each day). This week we began learning a small description of each book of the Bible. We are up to Numbers right now. We will also start a timeline very soon. We put the dates up last week and now we are just anticipating the day we will add the first pictures and details! There is also a Bible story we read twice a week. Right now, we are doing the days of creation.
Reading: He has reviewed all the letters and their sounds and for the last few weeks, we've been learning new sounds with multiple letters (blends). We've been learning rules to what makes the vowels say their different sounds and even why that "y" is so interesting. You know, our language is really too complex, so many rules for just a few letters. It's a wonder any of us learned how to read! ;) Occasionally he does a fun activity like making a book using sentences he read in his work book. Writing also comes during the reading lessons and we are beginning to get into remembering how to spell these words.
Math: We go through his workbook pages each day and do fun activities. He is learning addition, telling time, counting by twos, fives, tens, threes, and now sixes. We are also working on place vlaue and word problems. Money isn't far off either.
Science: Each Monday, we read about our science theme for the week and then we read library books on that theme the rest of the week. On Wednesdays we do our science projects. Last week, we learned about volcanos. That was super fun! We built a volcano out of clay and then painted it and on Saturday (when Daddy could be there too), we had an eruption! It was so fun, and our little neighbor girl saw what was going on and wanted to come be a part of it too. This week, we talked about Oceans and we painted with salt water to see what the salt would do to the paper. It was pretty neat to see what the salt did. Some weeks are fantastic and showy, others aren't as awesome, but we are all learning quite a bit!
We also spend time doing little art and craft projects, PE fun, and occasionally there are other little activities that my teacher's manual adds in. Each day is full and loads of fun. That is mainly why I haven't been on the blogs lately. By the time our day is done, I'm trying to get things done around the house and get ready for Jeff to come home. Then we have dinner, family play time, get the kids ready for bed, our nightly Bible time, and then lights out. By the time all of that is done I just want to bask in the silence! But I realize most of our friends and family are curious about our home schooling, with this wonderful resource we have available to us, I should do as much updating as possible!
Well, Jonathan just came up and alerted me to the time and the fact that the BIG Texas Tech and KU football game is about to start. I haven't made too big a deal out of football ever (it's just not my cup of tea), but today, I'm making a big football party here at home for us. We are going to have football shaped sandwiches, chex mix, punch, pop-corn, football shaped brownies, and we will all wear something red or black (as Texas Tech as we can get). I'll try to get some pictures!
Have a great Saturday, and a wonderful last of October week!
I cannot believe how fast this year has gone so far! School is fantastic! Now that's not to say we haven't had days that were quite a trial, but over all we love it! Jonathan is doing so well and Adie is even learning some herself. We are part of a co-op that meets once a week for art or PE and the kids love that. Last week was picture week. Maybe we'll get some of those.
Alex is about to be 1! He just turned 11 months on the 15th. He's not walking yet, but he's well on his way. I can't say if I think he'll walk by 12 months, but he might surprise us yet! He went from barely rolling around, to crawling and pulling up within a week. Once he decides he wants to do something, there is no stopping him and he's a quick learner!
Well, 30 minutes has flown by and it's time to get back to school. I just wanted to get on, add some pictures and give a small update. Maybe more to come later.
We love you all!
Well, we are about one week from our first days of 1st grade! We've been gathering school supplies, activity supplies, science experiment supplies, making library book lists, working on our schedule, and getting even more excited everyday! This week has been bug week. We've seen spiders and worms and ants all over our back yard. Today, we took a trip to a Nature center. We didn't see as many bugs as I hoped we would, but we did see a pretty awesome butterfly collection. Jonathan thought that was super cool and so we might have our own some day! He has also said that he wants to study spiders. I'll have to work on my fears with that one! The just give me the "eeby jeebies!" When I was younger (somewhere around 6-8 yrs old) I found a turantula in our bathroom! Ever since then, they give me the creeps. Oh, I've also had several spiders falling in my hair and that is not fun. But, for my kids I can work on that fear and teach them safety about them and we can all learn together about those interesting little creatures, and why God made them!
Our first week of school, our science theme is "Close to the ground." I didn't realize that when we were planning out the summer. It is great that this week is so close to that time so that we will already be in bug mode! This week we are ordering ants for our ant farm and they should arrive on or around that week of school!
Well, it's time to get on with the evening!
Hope you enjoy the video of Adie!
It is so hard to believe that summer is almost over! We are on week 8 of our 12 weeks of summer fun! We ordered our 1st grade curriculum this week and that should be in soon - yay! Jonathan is reading more and more and getting more comfortable with spelling. Adie is as silly as ever and is quite the story teller. Alex turned 8 months old this week and boy is he ever wiggly!
This weekend we will have the last two T-ball games, help some friends move, and go to Atchison for the Amelia Earhart festival. It's going to be great!
