We'll just loosen this Transformer...

Installing Transformer, Insulator, weird-looking fuse, and Security Light... while the wires are being led outward to the main power line poles.

This is all the pole is going to be used for... for now.... even though it's wired to run a whole house.

And it came on at dark all by itself.
A single light now shines at the back of the property.
It doesn't shine on much, but it's the first real improvement to the property, and it was a free installation for everyone who lost their utility poles in the Great Fire. Halleluyah! It's a start!

The Ship
Docked in the harbor at Ft. Lauderdale, this vessel was to be my transportation to the Bahama Island.

And out we went, into the open sea. The waves were choppy.

I enjoyed the voyage much more than I thought I would.
The Flamingo Hotel
Doesn't sound like a place Earnest Hemingway would stay at, but it was very comfortable. The beach was in front of the hotel.

Look closely- if you see a bump on the sand, it's a rock.

Just outside the door to my room was the dock where I could catch the Water Taxi to Port Lucaya.

It was a 10 minute taxi ride... roud trip for $5.00. The taxi left on the hour and returned ten minutes after the hour. If you missed it, you had to wait an hour.
All the beaches were barren
Checking out more beaches- still no shells.
Taking the bus to downtown Freeport.
The bus driver is driving on the right-hand side of the bus. But the cars are all on the left-hand side of the road.
Bus Drivers are friendly guys
On Grande Bahama, the Taxi Drivers have a powerful Union- they can go anywhere they want on the island. But the Bus Drivers must stick to their routes, and never go to the airport or the Ship Port.
At Fisherman's Hole Road
The first thing I saw when I got off the bus was a beach textured with bleached old Conk Shells.
On the bay side
On this side of the road there were no fishing shacks- only the shallow calm bay waters.
My first sight of the Conch piles
When I looked to the other side of the road, this is what I saw. Thousands of Conk Shells discarded in giant piles.
The Shell is not as important as the meat
Thrown away along with plastic and paper trash.

I couldn't believe my eyes- they were so perfect and pink and beautiful!

Since every restaurant on the Island served conch, there is a real demand for this shellfish.

They are so beautiful when they are wet
and there are SO MANY of them
I made my selections from the cleaner ones
I actually crept down to the water line and selected shells that were fairly clean
So many choices
It was impossible to choose! All I could carry back was about seven of them- seven out of a million!

The piles just went on forever down the beach on the deeper-water side of the road.
So I decided to try actually eating the conch
I had read that conch fritters were good. I saw this lady making them, and decided to give it a try.

The upper story- Robert disconnected the west wall from the roof rafters with a chopsaw. Then he pushed the wall inw

He fixed each section with diagonal braces
After the wall was pushed back to level, Robert fixed it there with diagonal braces.

For each beam that was pushed back into place, Robert tied in a line of diagonals which spanned the width of the shop
Braces in the kitchen
Braces were used in three sections, the kitchen, the front doorways, and over the central sales counter.
The shoppe has a new system of braces
The new braces are longer than the old ones and will give much more integral strength to the building.
