The Practice Take

We're a little late with this email ... now that Kira is walking (make that RUNNING!), life is even more hectic!  Photos and videos from September are posted at http://kirarose.shutterfly.com.   We can't believe how quickly the year has gone.  This time last year, she was sleeping for more hours than she was awake and she was 100% dependent on us for everything.  Now ... she's down to one nap a day, babbling, eating real food, and she thinks she's an independent young woman.  In so many ways, it feels like she is a toddler and no longer a baby.
 
The biggest news from September is that she turned ONE on the 23rd!  Exactly three weeks before the big day, she started walking.  By the day of her family party on September 20, she seemed to be everywhere all at once.  Along with walking, Kira seems to have discovered her independence and her right to have strong opinions.  Through words, signs, reaching, and shaking her head, Kira lets us know when she wants or doesn't want something. 
 
We are having so much fun with our spunky little girl.  She's very adventurous and loves to climb on everything.  If she falls when she is exploring, she pops back up and keeps on trekking.  Kira is also really social and loves being with other kids, waving to everyone, and being out and about.  Favorite activities include playing at the playground (especially on the swing), swimming, hanging out with her cat, reading books, and just running around everywhere, exploring.  Unless she's reading a book, she definitely isn't sitting still!  Sometimes we see parents with their babies hanging out on their lap or sitting nicely in their highchair at a restaurant.  Not our Kira!  If we're at a restaurant, she wants to meet everyone and it's hard to keep her corralled in one place. 
 
Anyway, she had a great birthday party with her (very large!) family, including family who traveled up from Southern California (and Uncle Will who made the trip from New York City!) to celebrate with us.  Lots of photos from the event are on her website.
 
We hope everyone is having a great fall and getting excited for Halloween.  We just picked out Kira's costume - she's going to be a tulip :-)

Big news!!  Kira is officially walking!  She has been taking steps for about a month but this week she took off and is now walking all over the place (kinda like a drunken sailor ... but walking none-the-less!).  We think she likes that it allows her to hold things while moving and it is pretty funny to watch her drag a big book or toy as she wobbles across the room or down the hall.  She has also learned how to climb up stairs and tries to climb on just about everything.  She is fearless!  To view videos of her walking and photos from August, visit:

August was a big month, filled with football, a visit from Grandpa Bob, a trip to Fairyland in Oakland, hiking, swimming, and general Nor Cal summer fun.  It's a lot of fun exploring with her because she is so curious and interested in everything. 
 
Kira is still animal obsessed - her favorite part of Fairyland was the petting zoo.  In addition to "cat" she now says "duck" and, occasionally, "dog," though most four-legged animals are still cats to her :-)  She is learning how to be gentle with our very old cat, Amber, and they are definitely really good friends. 
 
Her big new word is "that."  Basically, she is is constantly pointing at things and saying "that."  Often it is to indicate that she wants something, sometimes it is just curiosity (e.g. "What is that?").  She "talks" a lot and really seems to be trying to have conversations with us.  Unfortunately, we can't necessarily understand what she is saying but she keeps trying to communicate!

Once again, it was a busy and fun month.  Joanne has now been at her new job for two months and Kira is loving her new daycare.  The daycare is owned by a Brazilian woman and her mother and they are assisted by a woman from Honduras, so Kira is now learning Portuguese in addition to Spanish.  Of course, we'd love to think she's trilingual but at this point, her vocabulary consists of mama, dada, cat, book, baby, hi, and, our favorite (and hers), ball.  Anything round is a ball ... and that included a kid wearing a helmet.  Oops.
 
Kira is on the verge of walking.  She can stand on her own and walks around and around holding onto everything.  However, she is such a fast crawler, we keep wondering if she will have any motivation to walk.  Either way, she's keeping us on our toes!!  Basically we are constantly chasing her wherever we go and she *loves* the chasing game.  She'll crawl very fast and when we start to chase after her, she looks over her shoulder and laughs and then keeps on crawling.  Her #1 target is our cat's food dish.  Why?  We don't know ... must be something about the fact that we always say "no."
 
In addition to her vocabulary and motor skills, Kira's culinary taste has expanded ... a bit.  Current favorite are Cheerios, blueberries, plums, and basically anything she can feed herself.  She also seems to not mind yogurt.  She's not a big fan of purees on spoons but we manage to get about 2 jars of food into her one way or another every day.  Her newest talent - shaking her head with an emphatic "NO" when she doesn't want anymore to eat.  She's also great at smiling and laughing with her lips firmly together when we make goofy faces in an attempt to get her to open her mouth so we can sneak in a bite.  She definitely seems to have the redheaded feisty-ness :-)
 
Some highlights this month included attending training camp at Mom's new office (the San Francisco 49ers Training Facility), a visit with Grammy Suzy, a day in Santa Cruz at the beach, a jam packed fourth of July with three different events (a festival, a Mexican BBQ and soccer match, and a BBQ at Grandpa Bruce/Nana's house), and a day at Gilroy Gardens for Dad's birthday (where she rode her first amusement park rides). 
 
August is off to a great start so far.  We can't believe that Kira's 1st birthday is just 6 weeks away. 

Happy Fourth of July!  We hope you had a wonderful celebration.  We've uploaded photos from June to http://kirarose.shutterfly.com :-)  What a month!!  Lots of adventures for all of us! 
 
Kira is now 9 months old and *very* mobile - crawling everywhere, pulling up on everything and trying very hard to walk.  She's very proficient at walking around the coffee table, the bookshelves, and, unfortunately, her crib.  It's made it very challenging to put her down for naps and, unless she is very tired, harder to put her down to bed at night, too! 
 
Her vocabulary seems to be expanding everyday with lots of new sounds and a clear association between the word 'mama' and her mom, 'dada' and her dad, and, of course, 'CAT!' and her ancient cat, Amber.  She also says 'HI!' and pairs it with enthusiastic waving.  She loves to wave and do high fives - it's proven to be a very popular 'trick' when we are out and about and has helped us make some new friends. 
 
Kira is also continuing to expand her menu of foods.  She'll now eat most things pureed and we have started introducing finger foods.  So far, favorites are teddy puffs and avocado.  Today we went to the farmers' market and she enjoyed sampling freshly cut peaches, watermelon, and other fruits.  Of course, this all means more bibs and onesies to wash ... boy is it messy!!
 
This month, Kira went on her first international trip - to the Bahamas.  Rob 'had' to go for work (he was helping Dolphin Encounters get ready to launch their online storefront for photos of guests swimming with dolphins) and Joanne and Kira decided to tag along.  Rob had to work for about three days of the trip but fortunately, on one of the days, Joanne and Kira were invited to join him for a swim with the dolphins and a chance to meet a sea lion.  Kira kissed the dolphin ... and, of course, she called the 500# sea lion cat :-)  It was an adventure traveling with a newly crawling 9 month old but we all enjoyed the chance to spend significant time together as a family.  Fortunately, she did great on the flights to and from the Bahamas (much to the delight of our row-mates on the flights!), sleeping, smiling, eating, and playing and barely fussing at all.
 
Joanne also had a very eventful month - she said 'goodbye' to the Mountain View Police Department and started a new job as the Director of Community Relations for the San Francisco 49ers (http://www.49ers.com).  In this role, she will be directing Community Relations functions for the 49ers, including working with the NFL, non-profit and corporate partners, publicity/media, game day and training camp events.  It involves working with community and non-profit leaders throughout the Bay Area to develop and manage high visibility programs based on the Club’s objectives and area of focus.  She will also be responsible for establishing working relationships with various non-profit causes, supporting national NFL community programs, and fostering player and staff involvement and passion for a cause.  It is going to be a lot of work but also a lot of fun!!  Plus, Kira will have access to some of the best show-and-tell items of anyone in preschool (and Rob's pretty excited about having tickets to the games!)!
