A Great Year!

After winning versus Dewey and Verde Valley in the Tournament of Champions, Kiwanis had only their second loss of the season versus Camp Verde in the Championship game.

We Won It All!

Kiwanis 7, Sherwin Williams 3 in PLL Championship Game.

Wins vs. Foxworth

2010 Season Begins

Opening day game win - 14-7 vs. Sherwin Williams.

Injury Update

Jeffrey asked me to send out an email and thank everyone for their concern about his elbow injury at the last game.  Jeffrey is doing great!  He can bend his arm without pain or problem.  Thankfully the injury did not result in anything broken or chipped, just a "bad abrasion" according to the doctors.

Game 1 victory

We won the first tournament game 16-7 against Foxworth. Home Depot tonight.

Tournament Saturday

We play Saturday, June 6 @12:00 in our first game of the 2009 tournament. If we win we'll move to the semi's on Monday.

If a batter hitches his hands down prior to swinging, he will generally have a difficult time handling a high pitch. of course, much depends on the size and timing of the hitch, as well as where his hands start and finish. However, most hitch hitters have more sucess with pitches low in the strike zone. Just something to think about when observing hitters.
5/24/2010 7:58:43 PM - 003024663217
For most of my career , I didn't worry about who was at bat. All that matters is that you excute pitches, work fast, change speeds, add and subtract, hit spots. throw strikes. Somtimes, I'd pitch around certain guys b/c they had more power than others, or b/c certain game situations require a specific strategy, but 99% of the time, I attacked the strike zone with my best stuf- hit if you can!
5/13/2010 4:50:35 PM - 003024663217
An over looked aspect of many in-season running programs is agility. pitchers don't have to make cuts or do a lot of quik footwork when they pitch, so many coaches dont see the value in agility drills. Yet, agility drills develop leg power, balance, footwork and pitchers learn to control thier body. They teach pitchers to change direction at full speed and are explosive. Try to add 1 agility drill per week!
5/12/2010 10:01:40 PM - 003024663217
Long toss is a great way for pitchers to work on their changeups. At various distances, I threw 1 change up for every three fastballs. By long tossing with a changeup grip, you are training to have fastball arm speed, which is essential for fooling batters. I started off gripping with a circle change until I could control it. Then I played with the finger placement and pressure points to refine the pitch.
5/11/2010 5:43:58 PM - 003024663217
For future reference: Three factors to consider when throwing a curveball: 1) dont rotate the wrist and arm until the hand travels over the shoulder. 2) Throw it at full arm speed. I know it's anoff speed pitch, but in orderto get the" bite" thats desired on a big curveball, full arm speed and rotation is a must. 3) Cusion your arm, there should always be a slight bend in elbow in order to protect it from injury.
5/6/2010 6:30:22 PM - 003024663217
I really want parents to relize that throwing any type of curve is really bad on the elbow. Even a spiked curveball can damage a kid at this age. The elbow is just not strong enough yet at this age. 95% fastballs, with a change up, is all they really need. Great season guys!
5/6/2010 6:02:55 PM - 003024663217
As with any pitcher at any level, being able to to consistently throw strikesw is the name of the game. Contributing factors to poor command: 1) break down in mechanics, 2) anxiety and 3) reluctance. Many pitchers become over whelmed by the count, inning, runners on base or scoreboard. Coaches must remind pitchers these are non factors. All that matters? your next pitch. Focus on the right things & command improves.
5/4/2010 1:29:07 PM - 002006663667
Derek did a fantastic job last night pitching, perhaps he's reading your columns, Jeff?
5/3/2010 4:45:05 PM - 003024663217
When warming up for a game, it's important not to let the results of your bullpen carry over to the game mound. It doesn't matter if your bullpen goes well or poorly- you must seperate what happens between the two mounds. For me, the way to do this was to go to the dugout, take off my glove and hat, towel down, put on a jacket, grab some water, and sit for 5 min- visualizing my pitches. what do you do?
4/29/2010 5:00:00 PM - 003024663217
Deception is the key to pitching. I define it as the ability to keep the a hitter from picking up early release point, and the ability to change speeds. keeping the front shoulder closed helps with deception and keeps the throwing arm in a strong position. It also aids the pitcher in throwing the top half of the ball at a downward angle. Have you ever had hitters tell you your ball sneaks up on them?
4/13/2010 7:11:40 PM - 003027466623
you spelled volocity wrong should be velocity lol
4/13/2010 6:08:10 PM - 003024663217
In the weight room, baseball players often create imbalances in their body: the chest is worked much harder than the back and Scupular muscles. This can cause the shoulder to roll foward, creating instability in the Scapulas and compromising joint placement. the result? A loss in volocity and performance: if you perform chest preses defined by ( " push" movements) balance it with back exercises ( " pull" movements .)
4/8/2010 9:49:18 PM - 003024663217
A quiet bat, meaning less movement, will lock you in better. When pitcher is throwing hard, move back in the box. It has really helped jeffrey.
4/8/2010 9:34:30 PM - 003024663217
As a pitcher gets into high school, I think it's important for him to start having a working knowledge of his body. biomehanics and anatomy can become very dense, but even a basic uderstanding of wrist, arm, rotater cuff and shoulder, core, legs, etc, can make a big difference in taking your pitching and training to the next level. What do you think?
4/1/2010 9:26:18 PM - 003024663217
I was asked what pitchers should do on a suicide squeeze plays. My answer? It's all or nothing. Charge the ball and if you think you have a chance to make a play at the plate, barehand the ball and "Shovel it", to your catcher. Stay low to the ground.
4/1/2010 8:53:11 PM - 003024663217
Nothing will make a coach dig into his bag and take out his radar gun faster than apparent arm strength.I recognize that velocity alone is not enough, but it's a quality most coaches look for initially when attending a recruiting showcase or game.Simply stated, velocity allows a pitcher a greater margin for error.
3/30/2010 5:32:46 PM - 002006663667
Thanks, Jeff!
3/28/2010 2:55:56 AM - 003024663217
It's been my experience with pitching mechanics, that upper half is much harder to change than the lower half, in other words, once a kid has established his throwing motion, It can be very difficult to change those habits therefore, when working with pitchers, focus on the lower half- good lower body movement ofton " self corrects" poor upper movement.
3/25/2010 9:07:21 PM - 003024663217
 I spelled pitcher wrong!
3/25/2010 9:05:45 PM - 003024663217
I ment pitcher, that's the correct spelling.
3/25/2010 8:59:29 PM - 003024663217
Confidence is arguably the most important part aspect of pitcher How one thinks will determine how one performs. While the less than confident pitcher will tend to nibble fearing contact, The confident pithers trust his ability and challanges hitters agressively. Are you a confident pitcher?
3/24/2010 3:30:04 AM - 003024663217
