Paul J. Vieregge

 1922 - 2009

Paul firmly crossed the Threshold on March 27th his focus fixed on Walking the Path, with occasional touch-back contacts to us.  His body was not as eager to go.  For the next 3 ½ days his family did round-the-clock bathing, turning and holding what had been left behind.  Saturday evening our godson, Toby McLeod, drove  down from  San Jose to stand on the deck and play his saxophone.  Paul came back to greet him and to listen.  Toby opened with “St. James Infirmary” and riffed for fifteen or twenty minutes.  As Toby, and his reed, warmed up he began deep, powerful developments.  Paul asked for crushed ice.  Mary offered the clear plastic glass.  Paul stared at it – “How about some Bombay over that ice?”  He received it, took a few sips.  Toby came inside and played.  At 9:20 PM he and Paul again said goodbye.  Paul closed his eyes and returned to the Work.  Mary and Ed re-positioned him on his side.  At 1:45 Monday morning Mary watched him take a long breath.  He peacefully exhaled.  When I got there he looked like a twelve year old boy, tired and happy, sleeping after a full day.

  Love,

  Penny

Music out on the deck

Hello,

Last night, Saturday March 28, Paul's God-son Toby visited the house and played the Saxafoon out on the deck.

This was truly a joyfull moment for Paul and family (See photos below)

Thanks Toby.

Paul had a very peacefull night.

Paul has been sleeping most of the day. (today Sunday March 29.)

We can say that Paul's journey is nearly complete.......

Paul back in Big Sur

Hello all,

Paul was brought back home on Wednesday March 25, he really wanted to go home.

We have implemented night shifts, this way there is always somebody at the house.

Paul is walking the path but keeps coming back.

Last night he told us he was ready to go and that he would split soon....Penny / Josh / Mary and myself were sitting around the bed embracing him....but then he kinda opened his eyes and said, hey since we are all here, lets play some dominoes.

U know who kicked our asses, good on ye Paul.

At the moment we have reached the point that it is best not to have any visitors, only family and care-givers.

Paul in town

Hello all,

March 23,

Paul was brought over to the Westland Hospice House in Monterey this Monday morning.

Paul is very weak and confused at the moment.

Mike drove Penny home and is staying the night with Penny and Josh, Mary is staying with Paul at the Westland house.

Will keep U all posted

Tim / Mike and Joel at the house

Hello all,

On March 17th Tim and Mike drove down to see Paul.

Mike flew in from Mexico the night before and met with Tim at the Jazz Fest Office.

Paul had mentioned a few times that he was looking fwd to see them, well it turned out to be great visit, lots of stories from the good old days were shared with some fine jazz playing in the background.

Tim brought some CD's with some fine Jazz. (Larry Coltier gave the CD's to Tim in order to give them to Paul, Thanks Larry).

That same afternoon Giles and Kaila visited Paul as well.

Tim drove back home and Mike stayed the night in Big Sur.

On March 18th Joel drove down to see Paul, again some fine stories were shared.

Joel stayed the night in Big Sur (with Mike) and drove home today.

Mike took off today and will be back in Big Sur on Monday / Tuesday.

Paul was very pleased to see all his friends but as U can inmagine it took the winds out of his sails a bit.

On a more general note, I would like to thank all the family members and friends that support the family and stop by the house to see Paul and Penny on a regular bases, and all of U that have been in contact either via phone or via mail....thank U all.

Cello and Luka in Big Sur

Hello all,

Cello and Luka (flew in from Portland) drove up from LA and visited Paul on Saturday.

It was a great but on the other hand a difficult visit for Cello and Luka, after the visit Cello send me a very nice E-mail which we will printout and handover to Paul.

Paul is a little less mobile at the moment and spend most of his time laying in his new fancy bed.

See below pictures.

Rainy Big Sur

Hello all,

Paul stayed at the Westland house in town from Monday till Wednesday, nothing major, he needed to go there as Paul needed some oxygen that was not available in Big Sur.

At the moment Paul is back home since we picked him up yesterday.(wednesday)

Josh was ready to break him out on Tuesday as Paul really wanted to go home, but they would not let him go, Josh was even racing the wheel-chair down the hall-way in order to get him home.

Oxygen part has been solved, Paul has his own collection of 9 cylinders = 45 hours of oxygen and his own oxygen machine.

More News

It has been 10 days ago since Paul had his last chemo and so far he has good and bad days.

Paul is collecting stories, he asked Mary to google him on-line, so any stories / photos about Paul are welcome, we will add them to the blog.

Paul would love to hear from U all.

Thank you, for the years you all contributed to the life of my father. It is a Strange bitter sweet journey of discovery, who is and was my dad and the lives he touched.

Update Feb.17, 2009

Hello All,

Paul (and Family) has made the difficult decision to sign the papers for the hospice program.

This means no more chemo-treatments.

It also means that a nurse will be at the house 2 / 3 days a week.

Hospice is arranging a new bed as well as other items needed tomorrow.

Keep U posted.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2009

Back again,

So just a (little) update.

As U all can read below, Paul felt great the first few days after his second Chemo last week, however it comes with ups and downs as expected.

Paul went back to the hosipital on Wednesday (with Mary) and again on Thursday (with Penny and Mary).

After his treatment on Wednesday (no chemo) Paul wanted to go to trader Joes in order to do some shopping but at the same time he really wanted a drink at Rio Grill, since it would have been too much for both events Paul decided to go for the drink, I would.

Mary had to finish her shopping so she called Helen and Jerry in order to hang out with Paul at the Rio Grill, this worked out well.

That same night Paul's friend JC showed up at the house and stayed the night.

Mary picked up Paul and Penny to go back to the hospital on Thursday morning, Paul was a little tired from the day (night) before.

The appointment on Thursday turned out to be a long one due to planned blood transfusion, Paul had his own little room in the clinic which turned out to be the music and video room for Paul, Penny and Mary during the treatment.

Mary brought her Ipod and had Paul listed to Miles Davis, since he never used an Ipod in the past he shouted out loud " Am I the only one who can hear this?" which turned out to be a very funny moment.

The 3 of them then watched the DVD of the Monterey POP festival on Mary's laptop, funny I say since Paul had said after he worked the POP festival that he worked it once and never again...it is what it is

All of this during and in between treatments, RIGHT ON.

Later on:Paul had Mary compose a little letter for Mike Wilmot about Paul's wishes for what will come in the future. This was a hard one for Mary but she understood this bitter-sweet concept.

Last but not least, as mentioned before during the Chemo treatments, hospice is on a stand-still, so Paul has been signed-up for the so called "Home-bound program" this means that a nurse can help the family (Penny) a few days a week and keep Paul company, this person will visit the house on Tuesday for the first time.

I said last but not least, however I have to mention (I am in Holland at the moment, returing to CA Feb.24) that Penny / Josh and Mary have done a remarkable job taking care of Paul.

Paul has its ups and downs but has been very vocal lately, I am sure he would love to hear from U all........................................................................

The day after

Hello All,

As mentioned before,  yesterday Paul went for it's second Chemo treatment.

Penny and Mary went with him.

I talked to him the day before, and he assured me that he was very nervous and that this could be the decider by means of if he would go for a 3rd treatment or if he would go for hospice.

He informed me this morning that he felt great and that so far he does not have the same pain as after his first treatment. Good news I say.

I have to say that Paul has done well the last 10 days, he is eating and is moving around alot more then 2 weeks ago.

At the moment his condition is much better then it has been before, it is almost a 180 degree difference, way to go Paul.

Let's hope it stays like this!! and that the upcoming days will be as good as today.

Super Bowl at Paul and Penny's Feb.1st 2009

As U all know last Sunday, Feb.1st was the big day, another Superbowl.

Paul invited a few close friends in order to watch the game at his place.

It turned out to be a success, he enjoyed the company and the game, bonus I say.

On Wednesday Feb.4th Paul is going for its second Chemo.

Will keep U all posted.

2009

Indeed it is 2009, and boy time flies.

What is new in our world:

Besides the fact that we all moving forward a lot has happened in our lives.

Mary has found herself a new job as manager at a local restaurant called River inn in Big Sur California and so far so good.

Ed just finished the set-up of the latest Holland America Line Vessel the Ms Eurodam and did a final (for now) training trip on board the Ms Eurodam.

Ed is now in limbo and waiting what the future will bring, Seattle or Italy or both?

In the meantime we are dealing and handling the care of Paul Vieregge, Mary's dad.

Paul Vieregge (86) has entered the last stage of his life, all of U know what I mean.

We will keep you all up-to-date via this site and via seperate E-mails.

The text of Paul's interview with the BBC, see weblink on the right-hand side of the page

It was 40 years ago today...no, wait, not Sgt Pepper's again. Today, we're on to a different psychedelic moment in musical history.

It was 40 years ago this weekend that the Monterey International Pop Festival happened. The festival took place from June 16 through the 18th, 1967 in . A collection of the original music from the festival was released this month. It's got songs by the likes of The Who, Jimi Hendrix, and Jefferson Airplane. Back in 1967, festival organizers wanted to offer the 200-thousand spectators something a little different. Something unfamiliar. Like a sitar player named Ravi Shankar. Or a bopping trumpet player from named Hugh Masekela.

MASEKELA: "People were turned on in those days just with music. There was no genre, category, or marketing as there is today. People just loved music, they either liked it or it didn't turn them on."

40 years ago, Hugh Masekela was in self-imposed-exile from apartheid-era . He lived in . The organizers had seen him play at a club there. The festival was a boost to his career. But Masekela says he had other agendas as well.

MASEKELA: " was a platform to be able to get more visibility to bring awareness about what was happening especially on my continent."

And as Hugh Masekela made the rounds at Pop, he found allies in David Crosby from the Byrds, and Jorma Kaukonen and Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane.

MASEKELA: "And they were some of the first people who became aware of what was happening in because of our association. They didn't just live for Monterey Pop. They lived their lives like that on a daily basis."

Hugh Masekela says he doesn't remember much about his set at Monterey Pop. He says he was still getting used to his new band. Paul Vieregge was the stage manager for Monterey Pop. He says Masekela's South African vibe was not totally out of left field for the audience.

VIEREGGE: "Most of the guys playing in his band were jazz musicians out of LA. And there was an acceptance to his music. But Ravi Shankar was a complete change."

Ravi Shankar was a complete change. And was Shankar's big bow to 's hippies.

VIEREGGE: "He asked the people not to smoke, he asked them to be quiet, he asked them to give an opportunity to be heard. He was introducing a whole generation to a new sound."

VIEREGGE: "Almost religious. You know a lot of people looking over the tips of their fingernails. You know what I'm saying? Hands folded in front of their faces, that sort of thing."

Hugh Masekela also has a clear memory of that performance. He remembers Shankar's sitar cutting through the background noise.

MASEKELA: "I've never been in an audience that was that quiet. Of course a lot of people were tripping. But it was like very quiet, people were on very very quiet and gentle LSD trips."

Drugs or not, there was an acceptance of these sounds. And there was a sense of common purpose, too, says Masekela.

MASEKELA: "It was a time of fighting very very seriously against injustice through culture and arts, you know. And I think that it was a period that made the establishment feel that culture and arts shouldn't have the power that it had, the influence that it had. Because shortly after that music became commodity-based. It was no more about music. It was about a commodity to sell most of the time."

The business of music has certainly changed. But stage manager Paul Vieregge sees a certain parallel between 1967 and 2007.

VIEREGGE: "We're again in a long unpopular overseas war. Are the young people going to come up with some things that are going to help us move on as a...like the hippies, starting to become an influence on how people thought about the country they live in. You know, we haven't stopped the train in a long time."

Which Trompet?

Unknown Trumpet... While we're playing Louis Armstrong trivia, check this out. There's a persistent rumor that Armstrong's trumpet was the model for the original Monterey Jazz Festival logo (the one with the trumpet on the chair). It's one of those bits of local urban folklore that you hear every now and again, and it makes sense: Armstrong did play the first Monterey Jazz Festival in 1958. Alas, just like the poodle-in-the-microwave story, it's not true.

According to Paul Vieregge, the stage manager for the first jazz festival (and for many, many years thereafter), the logo was designed by Colden Whitman, who now lives in . A phone conversation with Whitman drove a stake through the rumor's heart.

"No, it wasn't Armstrong's trumpet," Whitman laughs. "It could be any trumpet."

Big Sur Jazz Fest

The Big Sur Arts Initiative became the parent organization for the festival in the fall of 1999, taking the reins from festival founder Paul Vieregge as he retired, again, from festival production work. His 35-year history with the venerable Monterey Jazz Festival helped to put this small, community-style event on the map, and he is still a part of the family we call Big Sur JazzFest.

OK, so here's the bad times with good intentions. For all of us who have worked in the music biz here on the and in , I know I can affirm collectively that we

are truly saddened to hear that our dear Paul Vieregge, a great soul and a boon to the sound and production for both the Monterey Jazz and Monterey Pop festivals, as well as his baby, the now defunct Big Sur JazzFest, is approaching the end of his stellar life.

I'm thankful to have been closely linked to him and his wife Penny through the years, and I've enjoyed so much the laughter at the parties and the sharing of musical knowledge.

Since he's still with us, and I've been told that he is in a celebratory mood for most of the time, if you are interested to check in with him now, there is this Web site where you can make contact and share your thoughts and memories: www.klaphark.shutterfly.com.

If you are connected to anyone close to him, give a call to see whether the time is right to visit or to give him a call.

Thank you Paul, for everything you are, and what you have contributed to our lives and to so many through your musical work. We love you!

  E-mail from Susann:

My name is Susann Cate Lynn, I live in PG.  I just read your column about Paul Vieregge.  I tried to make an entry on the website you mentioned, but I don't think it worked, as I went back in and it didn't show up.  I would REALLY appreciate it if you could share something with him and/or his family.

Over twenty years ago (I'm not sure which anniversary it was!), Paul made a copy of Ben Webster's Atmosphere for Lovers and Thieves for us.  The circumstances made it so very special for my husband and myself.  We were at Nepenthe for our wedding anniversary.  Paul was our waiter every year.  It was Summer Solstice and a full moon and 75 degrees at 11:30pm when we finally left.  When we walked out onto the patio, the most sublime sax began to waft over the warm air - the moon was on the water - it was magical.  We asked who that was, and Paul told us, and said he would make a tape and send it to us, as the album was no longer available.  It arrived on Valentines Day.  Amazing!  His kindness and thoughtfulness and follow through just blew us away.  It still does.

My husband, Michael would see Paul at Trader Joes in PG, where Michael works, and would thank him just about every time for that wonderful thoughtfulness of many years ago.

I can't believe I synopsized our experience so briefly.  It was so huge for us, I could write a story about the experience.

Thank you for your graciousness.  I do hope you can share this with him.  Blessings, Susann Cate Lynn and Michael Lynn, .  email:  anacrombie@aol.com or aikimikie@aol.com

No no this a real story, we were in Asolo Italy at a vineyard, a vineyard that Mary and I visited on a regular bases.

When we brought Paul and Penny up to the vineyard it appeared to be closed for the public, then we saw Maria the owner and asked her what was going on....

She explained us that one of the head of the families (mafia) would be coming over for lunch and we could not really stay.

However for some reason Paul connected (without speaking Italian) with him as the mafia dude thought that Mary was Paul's mistress and he really liked that.

Long story short, Paul the mobster.

PAUL VIEREGGE, for 34 years the Monterey Jazz Festival stage manager (he became Stage Manager, emeritus, in 1992) and a friend of many of us for longer than that, has always had a delightful, visionary aura about him.

Although he set beautifully lit and sparsely decorated stages at Monterey, Vieregge's great enthusiasm was for the music - he would scurry about backstage going

"shhhh" so he could listen to the spotlighted performance.

Ever the visionary, Vieregge early this year told me of his plans for 1996. "We're putting together a jazz party down here at Big Sur - a party, not really a festival - and I think you'd like to come down," he said. In mid-March I asked him how things were progressing. He quipped,

"Well, as Wilbur said to Orville, "Now that we've put it together, let's see if it'll fly.' "

Last weekend as the new Charlie Hunter quartet, last performers on the bill, roamed through its own special jazz universe and about 400 fans on the sun-bathed Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park baseball field listened and lounged, munched food (supplied by Big Sur restaurants), danced and otherwise dug the scene, it was evident that Vieregge's jazz party had indeed flown.

Musically the party was a notable success, with such performers as guitarists Hunter, Bruce Forman and Philip DeGruy; singer Rebecca Parris, saxists Kenny Brooks, Calder Spanter (both now with Hunter), Paul Contos and Joshi Marshall (Mingus Amungus) - among others - playing better than ever.

Mingus Amungus bassist-leader Miles Perkins led the group - six instrumentalists, three dancers - through particularly effective renditions of "Pithecantropus Erectus" and "Fables of Faubus," while Scott Amendola, with Hunter, gave me proof that he's the best of the young next-century drummers in the new-jazz category.

The Hunter quartet played material from both its new

"Ready . . . Set . . . Shango!" Blue Note CD and its as-yet-unrecorded CD, due later in the year, which will be based on material from Bob Marley's 1974 "Natty Dread" album.

On Friday and Saturday afternoons and nights all of the Sunday afternoon jazz party's performers also played at various Big Sur locations. The spectacular new Hawthorne Gallery featured woodwind star Contos; Mingus Amungus played at Fernwood; guitarist Forman (who seemed everywhere all weekend) played Friday night along with singer Parris in the Sierra Mar Restaurant at Post Ranch Inn; on Saturday night he joined pianist Tee Carson's trio on the deck at Ventana Inn, where even hot renditions of

"Lester Leaps In" and "All the Things You Are" failed to warm up either the chilled, windblown listeners or musicians Carson, drummer Vince Lateano or bassist Buddy Jones.

The Ruse Ensemble Orchestra, an exciting San Diego / Tijuana Latin-jazz septet, played Ragged Point Inn, and Glen Oaks Restaurant featured flutist Tim Jackson (Monterey Jazz Fest's general manager and Kuumbwa Center's boss) on Friday evening. Up in Carmel, the Jazz Store (also home of KRML-FM ) presented Mingus Amungus on Friday, Rebecca Parris on Saturday. It was difficult, along the famous Highway 1 strip, to avoid Big Sur's big party.

With remarkable support from the Big Sur coast's business community (including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park), with many dozens of volunteer workers, with months of planning and efficient, informal organization and with a notable enthusiasm for jazz music and the jazz spirit, the Big Sur Jazz Party is flying high.

Oakland's Redwood Cultural Work / Redwood Records has closed down permanently after 23 years as a multicultural arts organization with a remarkable independent record label whose catalog included 72 albums of folk, world, Latin, pop and jazz.

Founded in 1972 by singer-songwriter Holly Near, Redwood's musical history included participation in anti-war, anti-nuclear, women's, lesbian / gay and Latin American solidarity movements. In 1992, with Near out of the organization, Susan Freundlich, Seja Min and Cynthia Frenz revitalized Redwood and reduced its debt - but not enough.

In announcing Redwood's demise, Freundlich said,

"Mid-sized companies like Redwood with fixed costs but without the financial cushion of large organizations are among the most vulnerable right now. . . . Organizations devoted to multicultural arts are especially fragile. The arts are the canary in the mine showing us what's being lost as the new social contract plays out."

Redwood made a powerful contribution to music and community building. It is already missed.

Big plans for Big Sur JazzFest

PHILIP ELWOOD

Friday, April 4, 1997

U can also click on the link on the left side of the blog, look for links.

ONE OF LAST year's nicest weekend jazz events was the delightful, laid-back Big Sur JazzFest, a scattershot series of performances featuring some wonderful Northern California musicians - Charlie Hunter, Mingus Amungus, Bruce Forman, Tee Carson, Rebecca Parris among them - playing at various sites along the Big Sur stretch of Highway 1 south of Carmel.

The festival's climactic presentation was a grand finale benefit concert held in the sunshine on the ballfield grass at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Beneficiaries then, and again for the 1997 JazzFest (April 18-20), are a dozen or so volunteer organizations in the greater Big Sur community, some of whom help put on the festival - setting up food and drink concessions, providing sound equipment and so forth.

"Are you planning to compete with the Monterey Jazz Festival?" someone asked Paul Vieregge, who, along with Bob Cosgrove, organizes much of the event. "I can't say in our first year or two that we've tried to compete with a 40-year-old international jazz legend," he answered.

"However," said Vieregge (who was the MJF's stage manager for 30 years), "we have had the Monterey's general manager, Tim Jackson, playing with his band, Real Time, at both of our festivals. Maybe, to reciprocate, he'll invite me to play a kazoo solo up at Monterey during a sound check."

This year's Big Sur JazzFest climactic concert, with trumpeter Jackie Coon as the master of ceremonies, will be held at the Pfeiffer ballfield April 20 starting at 11 a.m.

Featured performers are the great trumpeter Roy Hargrove and his quintet, with Harvey Wainapel and Scott Steed, Dmitri Matheny's quintet, Madeline Eastman, Dick Whittington, Dogslyde, Dottie Dodgion's quartet (Bill Berry, Coon, Forman and Wainapel) and Jackson's band Real Time.

All but Hargrove will also be performing at Big Sur highway spots (River Inn, Post Ranch Inn, Glen Oaks, Ragged Point, Nepenthe, Fernwood and the elegant Hawthorne Gallery) on Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings.

Jazz Festival Back in Big Sur

Edited by James Sullivan, Dan Ouellette, Lee Hildebrand

Sunday, April 11, 1999

Last year the slogan for the Big Sur Jazz Festival was ``The Road Went -- So We Went on the Road.'' Because of heavy winter rains that washed out Highway 1 south of Carmel, the modest jazz bash was forced to relocate to a hall in Monterey. This year the festival returns to its rightful place, the small seaside community that boasts spectacular views of the Pacific.

The fourth annual Big Sur Jazz Festival begins Friday in various venues around town, culminating next Sunday with a daylong outdoor concert at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Featured acts include trumpet maestro Roy Hargrove, who loves the event so much he's making his third straight appearance, and an impressive array of San Francisco and Monterey-based musicians including Dave Ellis, Omar Sosa, Ledisi, Mark Levine, Mundell Lowe and Virginia Mayhew.

The Friday and Saturday shows take place in a range of venues, from the upscale restaurant Nepenthe, where Ellis performs a Saturday sunset-on-the-deck show, to the down 'n' dirty roadhouse Fernwood, where Ledisi will deliver her exhilarating soul-jazz set for Saturday's dance and barbecue crowd. A local group, Just Friends, opens the festival at 4 p.m. Friday at the Rocky Point Restaurant; later that evening, Mayhew settles into Hawthorne Gallery and Sosa plays the River Inn. Levine performs Saturday at the Ventana resort.

The festival is the masterstroke of 76-year-old Paul Vieregge, former KGO-TV stage manager and producer (1950-70), retired Monterey Jazz Festival stage manager (1958-93) and Big Sur resident (since 1970). The seed for the festival came when Vieregge was approached by people at the Post Ranch resort area, one of Conde Nast's highest-rated vacation destinations, for advice on producing an annual jazz event.

``We figured it would cost far too much, something like $300 for each attendee, to break even,'' he says. ``That got me thinking about a festival I went to in Telluride one year. The producers there made it cost-effective by getting the musicians gigs at area clubs and restaurants, which helped finance the expenses. So we tried that here, and it works.''

It's been so successful that the festival has drawn 700 to 800 people for the Sunday concerts. ``We're looking to grow the audience to 1,000 and then keep it there,'' Vieregge says. ``We love cultural events in Big Sur, but we don't want the festival to become so big it negatively impacts our small community.''

Big Sur fest dazzles the faithful few

PHIL ELWOOD, EXAMINER MUSIC CRITIC

Friday, May 12, 2000

BIG JOE TURNER, long gone, would have been in his element singing those "Rainy Day Blues" at the

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Sunday afternoon. I could almost hear his voice, backed by John Broadway Tucker's band, carrying through the drizzle across the ballfield.

The baseball Giants may have canceled their game, but shortly after noon, when the fifth annual Big Sur Jazz Festival's seven hours of music were scheduled to begin, Paul Vieregge - the event's artistic director, stage manager and announcer - asked, through the water dripping from his cap's visor, "Where is the audience? Where are the fans?"

As a matter of fact, in the course of the afternoon's intermittent showers, a couple of hundred of the faithful did show up, carrying sand chairs and beach umbrellas, wearing broad-brimmed hats, caps and a pained look on their rain-splashed faces.

The small quantity of fans was

overwhelmed by the high quality of the performances, for the most part played - I was delighted to note - by musicians from the greater Bay Area.

Most of the "Sunday in the Park's" bands had played in the Big Sur area on Friday and Saturday at such spots as the Rocky Point Restaurant, Post Ranch Inn, Loma Vista, Ventana Inn, Jazz & Blues Store, Fernwood and the Hawthorne Gallery.

Saturday afternoon, Peter Apfelbaum's sextet played on the lawn at the Henry Miller Library and Ledisi, with Anibade, broke up the SRO crowd on Nepenthe's deck - it was the only performance for each at the weekend's event.

Outstanding performer? From the galaxy of stars at the JazzFest, guitarist Mimi Fox came across as the brightest. She and accordionist Gil Goldstein played duets at Friday's Hawthorne Gallery that had people raving all weekend; she joined Monterey Peninsula's outstanding Along Came Betty quintet in the Sunday rain on a few tunes (from "Body & Soul" to "Angel Eyes") then broke away

for some solo guitar numbers, including an unusual, up-tempo version of "Willow Weep for Me."

Fox bops, rocks and swings; she has a bright, light technique, beautiful tone, a keen sense of dynamics, and knows how to structure her solos as well as a performance set. She'll be playing a one-nighter Monday at Yoshi's.

Along Came Betty, a quintet led by drummer Patrick Tregenza and featuring compositions and arrangements by pianist Biff Smith, has been playing in the Monterey Bay area for a number of years - and regularly on the Garden Stage at the Monterey Jazz Festival; in fact, theirs was the opening performance of the 1999 festival.

Out in the Big Sur showerstorm, the Along Came Betty set came across like a series of hot flashes on top of splendidly orchestrated trad-bop - "Four Minutes of Spring" (based on "Joy Spring"), some variations on Charlie Parker's "Confirmation" among them. Saxist Stu Reynolds and trumpet/flugelhornist Brian Stock are very hip, very assured; Pete Lips doesn't play horn, he's

the bassist. It's a top-drawer band in the style of the Jazztet or the Jazz Messengers of the late 1950s.

Que Calor, the sometimes bop, sometimes Latin, always swinging East Bay sextet was a joy to hear again at the Big Sur JazzFest, although dancing - Latin or otherwise - under an umbrella is rather restrictive. As usual, Mark Levine's bright, rhythmic piano and Ron Stalling's sax were wonderful, as was Jeff Cressman's trombone.

Cressman was also on stage with Peter Apfelbaum's quintet, playing Saturday in the sun on the beautiful grounds of the Henry Miller Library. Apfelbaum was playing tenor sax and keyboards, with Will Bernard (among the most inventive guitarists on any scene) as well as drummer Josh Jones and bassist Deszon X. Claiborne.

Apfelbaum mixed up his set, playing some things from his years with Don Cherry, then featured Bernard within the ensemble, occasionally playing some fascinating counterpoint inventions against the sax-trombone duo. To give some veteran fans a bit of a

jolt, Apfelbaum commented casually that he, Cressman and Bernard had been playing together for three decades - since their Berkeley school years.

It takes Apfelbaum some time to get into a groove, but when he does, the collective improvisations of the group are mesmerizing; this has been true since his Hieroglyphics Ensemble days in the mid-'70s. Apfelbaum now spends a good part of the year in Europe, and is currently working on ballet score for a dance company in Holland.

Paula West, nowadays becoming as popular with the swing-jazz crowd as she long has been as a cabaret singer, performed in the rain with a wonderful quintet - Noel Jewkes on sax; Brad Beuthe, guitar; Bill Douglass, bass, Larry Hancock on drums, and Ken Muir, arranger, pianist. The inclusion of a guitar in a singer's accompaniment group, it seems to me, is essential, but a find like Hancock to play drums is remarkable. He plays feather-light drums and cymbals, yet he swings the beat beautifully without taking charge - a drummer's proclivity.

It's difficult to stand on a stage, look out on a foggy, drippy emptiness and sing in an intimate manner. West did it quite well, coming through on such great songs as "Skylark," and having fun with "Don't Fence Me In."

Swing dancing, like dancing to a Latin beat, doesn't quite work on wet, slick grass (or on a muddy infield), but some couples on the Pfeiffer Big Sur Park playing field did get to Lindy hopping to the Jellyroll jump band and the Louis Jordan-style singing of Belinda Blair.

The Big Sur JazzFest is run entirely by residents and merchants in the region of the Big Sur. The JazzFest is allied with Big Sur Arts Initiative to spearhead musical enrichment programs for Big Sure kids.

Although there was a large advance sale of tickets to Sunday's Jazz in the Park presentation, this year's JazzFest, of course, lost some revenue because of the weather. Regardless - because of the fine music, the informality and cordiality of all connected with the event, and the emphasis on local musicians, the Big Sur JazzFest continues to gain a fine reputation - becoming an inspiration for others who aspire to make jazz a more respected aspect of their community life. <

The famous 1917 Gibson F2

J.O and I had a short chat with Paul yesterday. We were fortunate to make contact before
his 'nap time". I told him I was playing mandolin  when J.O. handed me the phone. His
reply was something like this: "  Yeah, it's probably something like a 1917 Gibson F2
blacktop". J.O took this photo a few minutes after our conversation so I could share
the moment. I played it for the rest of the day.

This mandolin was a gift to me from Paul and Penny.(it was originally Paul's dad's) When I received it, there was no
headstock. Somewhere during it's life it was snapped right off. Fortunately it was a
clean break and my local luthier was able to craft a new one and glue it on the neck. It
is still fragile but holds its tune and intonation pretty good. PLUS it sounds great
for an old dog.

Handy man

Hey Mary,

It's Stephen from Big Sur. How are you? Long time, I've been wondering what you've been up to. Something told me to do an internet search on Paul. I found your website via the Monterrey Herald article about ten days ago that mentioned him.

Please give Paul my love and tell him that without him my musical life would be not as much fun as it has been. I live in it now and I play flamenco guitar and build classical guitars. If not for Paul I would not know shit about jazz.

I used to work a lot as carpenter here in the city. Once I did a big repair job on the bathroom floor in John Handy's house. As soon as I told him I knew Paul he was my buddy. That came with consequences however because then I was obliged to drive Handy around town and listen to his crazy stories. It's like I became Handy's handyman. He liked to talk jazz with me because I knew something, which of course I learned from hanging out with Paul and bugging him to teach me about the different styles and periods.

Take care,
Stephen
