Tour Course Description

FDSCI 660, Food Industry & Culinary our of Barcelona. (3 cr). This tour is an 11-day intensive food science study tour that will introduce students to the production of local food products and traditions of the region in and around Barcelona, Spain, with particular emphasis on quality and safety. Students will learn about the harvesting of plant and animal products, the processing of those products in traditional foods and dishes and why the people of Spain place such a high emphasis on their food. Students will participate in two different hands-on culinary trainings that teach them how to preapre traditional dishes of that region. The rich art, history and culture of Spain will also be studied. The course will include prepatory class meetings during the Spring semester to acquaint students with the region, the language, the culture and the typical food products.

Cost of the Trip

Total cost of the trip is $4907 plus 3 credit hours of tuition (all students pay at the in-state tuition rate). This cost includes airfare, transportation within Spain, lodging, entry fees, most meals, gratuities, insurance and emergency fees.  Emergency fees of $234 per student will be refunded to each student after the trip is completed, provided they were not used while traveling abroad. Students enrolled in the College of Ag are eligible for $500 in travel assistance. In addition, those students enrolled in the Food Science & Indusry curriculum are eligible for $250 in travel assistance from the Food Science Institute. The Office of International Programs offers a wide variety of scholarships that students are encouraged to apply for.
