Lake Effect Run Club - 1790 - Resolution Run 1/1/10

The weather Gods were gracious yet again as the 1st race of the year went off on a day with high temps in the 30's.......in January! Gone this year were the teen temps and bitter winds of last year. In fact toward race's end the fashion of choice was just a long sleeve-T and long pants.

The eventual crowd of runners swelled to what I'd guess was around 500. It looked bigger than the 400 of last year. Registration ran smoothly, as usual, despite no option except to register on race day. No goodie bag at this one.......the goodies came at the end. Our race numbers, funny as they were, were left-overs from this past race season. Some of us had Mountain Goat race bibs, I unfortunately had a Kid's Fun Run bib.....that's never a good sign. The $15 fee gains you the race, a 1 year membership in the Syracuse Track Club including their monthly news letter, and post race food and drink. What a bargain!

As tradition has it, the race started off with the traditional popping of the cork and we were off, a little bit late, but we were off. The course this year was quite a bit different from last year's, although the mega John Street hill was again included. There was a Champagne stop at the 3 mile point which actually was quite tasty, probably because I called it a night earlier this year on the eve of this run. The last mile of the course was quite curvy and included a short loop in the Inner Harbor Park. The race was certified and timed with a digital clock at the finish, but it wasn't chip timed.

After the race the huge food line at Spaghetti Warehouse built up quickly, but even though I was near the back, I was at the buffet in about 10-15 minutes. The ziti was excellent as was the spicy chili, although it stayed with me the rest of the day. There was beer in the bar room which was packed with runners hoping to win one of the purposefully crappy prizes given away. I think the whole Track Club must have cleaned out their garages and basements, because the junk never seemed to stop flowing. There were old shirts and hats, old paintings and used bikes. Whatever you chose you had to take home....that was the rule. It was a good time watching folks score a prize then quickly wonder, "What the heck am I going to do with this??!!"

As usual it was a well-run race by a great organization. Funds helped support a scholarship the Club gives away.
