Lake Effect Run Club - 2068 - Chilly Chili 2/7/10

There's nothing like fresh air, and there's nothing like Syracuse's air in February....try 16 degrees worth of air. The Winter temps around here always make for some interesting Winter running, and a record 1111 race finishers found out that face freeze is a real thing during the 6th annual Chilly Chili race in beautiful Cazenovia, NY.

Of course the weather could have been worse. It wasn't windy and the snow was light, but man it was cold. Prior to the start, the Middle School was a nice warm respite. Many had already pre-registered and picked their packets up at Fleet Feet, so the lines were short.....except for the ladies rest room line inside the school (that's because no one wanted to brave the cold port-a-potties outside). As runners lined up for the start it was quite a funny scene as folks were bobbing up and down like a wavy sea to try to stay warm.

The race wound through the Village along it's usual course. It was icy in spots as I saw at least 2 people go down. Towards the middle, the course turns back on itself and you race past the leaders racing back toward the finish (always a fun touch to races). I saw one water stop, sparsely manned and sparsely attended on this cold day where sweat wasn't much of an issue. There were a few families outside their houses to support us runners which was nice, and a number of College students along the course cheering too. Joel Hanlon was your overall winner in 16:11. Allison Lasnicki was your female winner in 19:12.

After the race, many took the 1/3 mile walk to the after party at the Cazenovia College Athletic Gyms. Racers went to one gym and families to the other. I've heard some complaints about the separation. I'm sure it was due to the combined huge crowd of last year gobbling up all the space, food and beer, but I think a combined after party would have worked fine. Mikey Powell, "The Polite Rebel", and the greatest lacrosse player to have ever played the game, provided the entertainment with his blend of folksy original and covered music. This guy has got more than just athletic talent! The Chili was delicious. Some spicy, some sweet, some with chicken, most with beef. Cooperstown Brewery provided the brews. Their variety was as large as their cups were small.

A well run race once again by Penny (who seemed to be everywhere!) and her band of volunteers. Proceeds went to Cazenovia's Children's House.
