Monarchs win 12U BPA tournament in Ceres
The Monarchs were nearly perfect this weekend in winning four games in the 12U division of the BPA tournament in Ceres, California. The first day, they beat the Black Sox and the Delta Dawgs 11-4 and 11-1. By giving up only 5 runs, the Monarchs were seeded #1 going into the second day of single elimination.
The Monarchs were even tougher on Sunday yielding only 1 run in the two games leading to the championship. Winning their first game 6-1, the Monarch went on to beat the Scrappers by in a shutout, 4-0. The Scappers had beaten the Monarchs two weeks before in a come from behind victory but with defensive gems and strong pitching, the Monarchs didn't give the Scrappers a chance. Only four runners reached base during the game, one was thrown out at second and another picked off first.
Way to go MONARCHS!!
Monarchs win Manteca Super Series on Sept. 21, 2008
The Monarchs captured the champtionship of the Manteca Super Series BLD. The score of the final game was 12-3. See the Monarchs web site for further details.
Tomateros Win 10U National Youth Baseball Championship
The Tomateros won the 10U National Youth Baseball Championship over the weekend. They beat the Juice of Orlando, the AAU champions, coached by Chet Lemon 7-6. There are some new articles about the games at the following web site:

There is one particularly interesting article about David Molina of the Tomateros. Some of you may remember a Tomatero with shoulder length hair. This article explains why he was growing his hair so long.

National Youth Baseball Championship for 10U Teams
Check out the following web site:
http://mlb.mlb.com/youthmajors/index.jsp
For the first time, 8 baseball organizations are sending representatives for 10U and 12U to the National Youth Baseball Championship, which is being held 8/21-8/23. The baseball organizations are: USSSA, Pony, Babe Ruth, Dixie Youth, Super Series, NABF, AABC, and AAU. The Tomateros are representing the 10U USSSA, and the Tamiami Playmakers (aka the Miami Playmakers) are representing the Pony organization. There is some video streaming to watch some of the games.
Should be interesting to see how the Tamateros and Playmakers stack up against the rest!
Go Monarchs!
Another Strong Showing by the Monarchs
The Monarchs made another championship game in Manteca - and lost a heartbreaker in the finals 2-1. Way to go Monarchs!
Lamorinda Monarchs Came to Play
Our Lamorinda Monarchs really came out and showed it could play with the best. With victories over three of the Texas finest - the Texas Nationals, Most Feared, and Avenger Red, plus a victory over a top Florida team, the Pensacola Aquasox, and a victory over the highly ranked New Orleans Monarchs, the Monarchs ended up 5-2, and tied for 5th. Our only two losses were to the top ranked Oklahoma Elite. Way to go Monarchs!
Home Again, Home Again
Sorry that I haven't had a chance to update... just got back home.
Well, the weekend wound up not as we wished, but still pretty amazingly. We lost to the OK Elite, knocking us out of the tournament... but we still ended up tied for fifth. Not bad for a team most other teams hadn't heard of before. They certainly know us now!
If you have photos from the week, please upload them so we can all see. And don't forget you can order directly from this site.
Welcome home, everyone -- great job, boys!
Highs and Lows
Well, after getting back to the hotel at 10 at night, I was a little too tired to give the update... sorry!
Here's the upshot:
-One loss :( to the Oklahoma Elite
-One rain delay of 75 minutes
-Two lost umpires
-Another weather delay of an hour
-A big win over the Avenger III team!
As a result, we're playing today at 8 AM (in 45 minutes) against... the Oklahoma Elite! We're out for a win this time. If we lose, we're done. If we win, we play again today.
There are only 8 teams left... and we're one of 'em!
Go Monarchs!
You Gotta Love It...
...Another win, that is! The Monarchs took the Most Feared and turned them into the Most Jeered. :) Just kidding... though we did shut them down 6-0. It was a solid game all the way around, with great pitching from Noah and Nathan. The performance was really a result of every member of the team. A lot of really great things happened, and the score showed it.
Go Monarchs! On to the quarterfinals tomorrow AM against the Oklahoma Elite at 8 AM. But now we're celebrating at MGM Hollywood.
A Nail-Biter of a Win
Whew. I thought I'd seen it all after our 16-13 win on Monday... but today may have topped that! 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning against the New Orleans Monarchs! That means we're 3-0 and advancing to the next round.
It was a 10 AM game which meant it was a wee bit hotter than our two previous games, and I think the boys were feeling the heat. The fans certainly were -- we were DRIPPING. I had to get up and walk around just to unstick myself from the chair (and to calm my nerves).
To add to the "cool" list -- Jack pitched a six-inning no-hitter! Woo-hoo, Spicy! (his nickname).
Photos to be added later... as soon as I get my USB cable. :)
See you for tomorrow's 8 AM game.
Woo-wee!
Well, it seems like a week ago, but it really was only this morning that WE BEAT THE AQUASOX, 8-0! We needed a nice, simple game after the ups and downs from yesterday... and we got it. The bats were on fire, and Noah pitched a heck of a game. We called it a day after four innings, and the boys headed out for a much-needed day off, enjoying the finest entertainment Orlando has to offer.
We were hoping that our two wins would be enough to get us a bye for Wednesday, but those 13 runs we allowed in on Monday kept us on the schedule. We'll be back on the field at 10AM Wednesday against... THE MONARCHS! How funny is that? The Lamorinda Monarchs will be meeting the New Orleans Monarchs. Who will come out on top? I think I know...
...And It's Getting Hotter!
If I told you the score of our game was 16-13, you'd probably wonder if I was talking about a football game instead of a baseball game... but believe it! The Monarchs topped the Texas National Team tonight in one of the strangest games I've ever witnessed.
It was a game of huge ups and downs, but maybe we're best off be describing the game by the numbers. We had:
-Five pitchers
-20 hits
-Five innings played
-16 runs
-Two shut-out innings
-8 strike-outs
-13 happy boys!
Whew. I think it took about ten years off my life! But the win was sweet... and tomorrow's will be even sweeter!
Off to a Hot Start
We're here, and it is H-O-T HOT! This morning was gorgeous with a slight breeze for the opening ceremonies -- thank goodness, because the boys were hanging out in the sun waiting for their turn to march in for at least an hour. The opening ceremony was nice with all the teams marching in and being announced one by one, and of course the Monarchs got a huge response from their loyal fans. Then a special guest made an appearance (see photos below) before the games began with streamers, confetti and beach balls.
The facilities here are beautiful, and BIG. Disney's Wide World of Sports covers 47 square miles, and I think we covered all 47 today. Right after the opening ceremonies we met at "The Compound" where a lot of the team is staying and took batting practice and got the kids used to the Florida heat.
We were excited to hear that our brother team, the Lamorinda Cougars, won their first game this afternoon. We're looking forward to our turn to take the field tomorrow at 5PM. Stay tuned!
