What wonderful work you are doing! To touch and enhance SO many lives. It must take so much time and work just coordinating all of this. Well done!

Orphanages and Schools We Supported in 2010

Lao-kids is involved with the Luang Prabang Government Orphanage School and the Numbuk Government Orphanage and Ethnic High School (still part of the Luang Prabang district). Until recently, we also supported the Suang Luong Ethnic High School which is located about 25 kilometres from Luang Prabang.

From late this year, we also began working in partnership with 3 other organisations that help children in Laos. They are COPE, Laynou's Library and Butterfly Children's Development Center.

You can read more about all these orphanages, schools and other organisations at: www.lao-kids.org.

Luang Prabang Government Orphanage School

The Luang Prabang Government Orphanage School is located in Luang Prabang, Laos. It is approximately 5 kms from the centre of this World Heritage listed city.

It cares for more than 500 children, ranging in age from about 6 years to 22 years.

It is actually doing quite well now as it has more involvement from other charitable groups. However, we still stay involved with the Orphanage School and ensure that the children’s personal, food, health and and educational needs are catered for.

Numbuk Government Orphanage and Ethnic High School

The Numbuk Government Orphanage and Ethnic High School is located at Numbuk, Laos. It is approximately 3 hours drive north from Luang Prabang.

In 2010, the orphanage is caring for 470 children. The children range in age from 11 years to 18 years.

This orphanage and ethnic high school provides education up to junior high school level  only. While at the Numbuk school, children do the school curriculum as well as learn a trade such as building. They have built themselves four dormitories, an eating hall, and four new toilet and shower blocks. The school also teaches the art of weaving. With limited resources, it provides extremely basic accommodation, food and education.

Once the children finish junior high school, they usually move to Suan Luang Ethnic High School (see below) to finish their last three years of high school.

In addition to this, the school operates an adult learning program where women from the villages are taught weaving and the men are taught building skills. The villagers come to the school and stay during the learning program.

Here are some photos of the delivery we made to the orphanage earlier this year

San Luang Ethnic High School

The ethnic high school is located approximately 25 kilometers north of Luang Prabang.

In 2010, there are 526 children who board at the school, mainly from the Kamu and Hmong ethnic groups. Their ages range from 12 years to 23 years.

If they manage to get to the school, all children are allowed to finish high school no matter what their age. Many children walk down from the mountains, sometimes taking them days to get to the school.

The poverty of these children can be understood when you know that the minimum requirement for a child to enter the high school is one complete set of clothing no matter how tattered that may be. This year the school had to turn away approximately 200 children because they did not meet this basic requirement.
