Happy 2009 everyone.  Good bye 2008, not sure I will miss you all that much.

 

Low lights of 2008. 

 

Jerry Marquis retired from Mod Tour.  It had been such a pleasure working with Jerry as his spotter for the Mystic Missile, then the Brady car.

 

I lost my Pettit engine, after just turning my fastest laps ever.  Was forced to order a crate engine, and that isn’t turning out quite as planned or hoped.  I had the tranny break in the car as about to make pass for the lead when using my 8.9 rules engine for one week (while waiting for the crate engine).  We finished the season off with a crash, getting t-boned by someone asleep at the wheel.  Rain outs dropped the race schedule to 12 points events.  Fewer and fewer classy guys to race against.  Even Ernie LaRose crashed his car and was gone for the rest of the year.

 

Hernia.  Had to live with it all summer and fall.  Double mesh style repairs done on Dec. 3rd.  Not a lot of fun, just beginning to feel closer normal.

 

Street cars etc.  Oh yea, they were fun too.  My 89 truck had engine troubles in Dec. 2007.  Started the year installing a brand new engine, and lots of assorted parts, planning to make it last for years.  Spent $5000 in parts alone.  Then it turns out I could not pull my enclosed trailer (just purchased) up my driveway without 4WD.  Had to buy my new GMC truck.  Still have yet to sell the 89 GMC.

Next issue was getting call from Jenny in January.  The Corsica died on the road.  Had it towed home after finding it broke a lower control arm doing about 10 miles per hour.  Her heart was set on a new corolla.  Cha ching.  Thank you daddy!

Don’t forget the grand prix!  December 17^th.  Approaching a toll booth from mass pike.  Looking ahead trying to find that one lane that still takes cash money….  I get side swiped by a tractor trailer rig as he tried to change lanes quickly and didn’t see my car beside him.  Door, fender, mirror, and entire nose of car ripped up before he came to a stop.  January5th, Perry-Lathrops of was given approval to start repairs.  Then two weeks later Allstate changes their minds and says car is a total.  I am still arguing over trying to get a settlement.  Good hands people my Arse!

 

There was some good stuff too:

 

Long time Sponsor John Simlick had both of his knees replaced and is doing much better getting around.  Boston Post Road Market  (of east lyme) joined us as track food sponsor.  That is pretty cool having some great grinders at the track each week.  The new Cargo Express Trailer we got from Wright Trailers of Seekonk MA has helped the team out a bunch.  Now we can load up the car before race day.  It is safe, dry, and secure.  I don’t have to unload everything when I get home on race night either!  The body on the car from Rayline Racing Bodies was holding up great, right up until that last race.

We were the fastest car at the track on many weeks.  Getting 3 victories.  Nat’s Racing engines has been a pleasure to work with. Nice to have the phone answered each and every time I call, and everything done as scheduled.  A fair shake for crate engines was hoped for.  Just maybe if someone else bought one???

 

The  73 crew….Just when things were getting pretty lean, Chris Michaud headed to Iraq etc.  Along comes Tim, Scott, and Alan (all Millstone co-workers) joining us.  With some fresh troops, along with Jonny, Jim, and Wayne.  Our team was in great shape at home and at the track.

 

Spotting for Todd Ceravolo, the Brady car, and for Dale Quarterley’s team was fun (Lime Rock, and Dover).  Next best thing to driving for me.

 

Had a chance to drive Todd Ceravolo’s back up car (Sunoco Mod) twice at Thompson.

 

Michelle Graduated from UCONN in May and she moveed back home.  We now have 2 houses worth of stuff in one house!  (couch, table anyone?) 

 

Mike Holdridge finished 3^rd in points on the True Value Modified Series Tour.  I will be Spotting for Mike in 2009.

 

Still have yet to make Kim too angry at me somehow.  We had many fun trips to watch Mike Holdridge race, even made a trip up the treacherous trails of Mt Monadnock!  I am looking forward to another year chasing races, family events, and trips.

 

Street cars.  I bought another Grand Prix to replace the old one that was just declared totaled.  ( I still await any settlement.  I considered buying a new version of the Chevy Malibu from Jacob at Valenti auto mall in mystic.  If you prefer to shop from an Honest guy who can talk about gear ratios, drive train, suspensions, etc without having to talk from a lower region of the anatomy.  Give Jacob a shout.  860-536-4931  I finally ended up selecting a used 2008 GXP with a snarling all Aluminum V-8 and slot car handling.  But I expect Kim will be jumping from her camry into a Malibu in the near future.

 

Current rules at Thompson will put the crate engine at such a disadvantage, I expect to put more focus on other things more often.  No sense wasting efforts trying to make my car faster.  Wasted effort right now.  Only thing that will matter is how well I play politicks.  Sorry but I am a racer.  Hopefully a few guys will buy a crate engine so I can try to be best of class.  I see little chance of that happening with current rules.

 

So with all of that behind us…..I am looking forward to a better 2009 year.

12-26-08 news.

December has had its challenges this year.  Recent losses in Kim's family still try on the heart.  Then finally I had surgery to correct some issues on Dec. 3rd.  I am basically still out of commission.

At least my ears work, as I am enjoying my first evening listening to my very own IPOD!

Also released on dec. 3rd were the 2009 rules for Thompson Speedway.  I am very angry about the changes.  Don't ever make your car different in any way from the rest of the field such as be the only car to purchase a crate engine.  Now when I win they give all the credit to the crate engine, that makes slightly less power than my old engine.

Bottom line is if I had one race and needed my best shot to win I would rather have my old pettit engine still in the car.

But since I like the idea of running an engine all season without touching it.....I paid a handsome amount of cash for the crate engine.

I am probably going to remain the only car running a crate engine as the track has mandated a weight penalty for cars running the zz4 crate engine(yup, the 73 is the only car).  The bonus rule is that only the crate engine cars must run gas purchased at the track.  GM says pump gas is OK. $7 penalty per gallon adds up in a bad economy.

Track has yet to release 2009 schedule but info has been leaking out from touring division schedules.  Only 3 visits from the whelen tour mods this year.  They are cool to watch, but us local divisions will save on entry fees etc.  I will call it a wash for now.

soon we should have the car preps under way.

I am a bit frustrated, as it seems any work trying to make the car faster, could just be countered with additional rules specifically to slow our team down again.

We had the fastest car before the crate engine, and did several times with the crate engine if we didn't get slowed down in the corner.  The crate engine package just doesn't race well in traffic.

I just wish the rules were followed as written before, or changed based on facts only.

Seems the crate engine isn't going to ever be the right choice for any teams wishing to win races.

I may install our engine from the 2000 season(8.9 compression rules), run it until it blows up, or the rules are corrected.  Just not sure yet.
