Alert-The lunch box CI Sport Expandable lunch box has been recalled because the gel/ice pack contains toxic anti-freeze (cryo freeze gel pack). The company has warned that it is so toxic it shouldn't be thrown away in the regular trash as it creates toxic waste. Most were sold at Costco and Walmart. Please check! For more info go to HLNtv.com/Robin.

If any of you LEAF families are going to Scare on the Square, Amanda and I are meeting at the corner by Kaffee Klatsch at 5. That way the kids can trick or treat downtown before it gets to late and spooky (and the parents can get their treat at the coffee house). We thought it would be fun to get some pictures of them in their costumes together and do a little team building! Join us if you are around and able. Happy Halloween.

Sally (and anyone else who was wondering!)--I think I have the "Extended Day Happenings" posted correctly now! It took some doing and some communication with Shutterfly, but I think we're OK now! Yea! Let me know if there are any other problems. The "Extended Day Happenings" should be near the bottom of the third column. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
10/12/2011 7:40:05 PM - 001028889546
Sally--Look at the bottom of this column--it will say Extended Day Happenings! It explains why we checked out longer books last week.

Open house was great. Luke enjoyed it and we did to. Mrs. Ellis, I was on here trying to find the information you said I would find about the Extended day assignment that I wrote you a note about. I've read to the bottom twice... where would I have found that information and how often will you post homework instructions on here? I don't check this but once or twice a month.

Thanks so much for a wonderful and warm Open House. Lily loved showing off her class and teachers to her parents, especially Daddy! And, the book fair gave me a chance to wrap up some Christmas shopping :). Thanks again.

Vani--So far, we have been talking about the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. We have also been talking about using the left button on the mouse when they need to click on something. We have done some work on rhyming words, letter recognition, and positional words. The positional words include over, under, in, on, and behind.

Karen--You will be receiving a note soon about Open House. Yes, children are supposed to attend with their families. It is from 6-7 p.m. This is an event for the whole family!
9/14/2011 8:58:09 PM - 004035640164
I really appreciate the effort that goes into this site. I love having early access to upcoming curriculum. I made a word wall for Lily and a flip book with her words and class themes. It helps remind us adults to work with them, too!
RE: Open House on 10/11- Are the students allowed to attend and what time is it? I don't think we will have anyone to watch Lily that night. Grammy will be in AZ.
9/9/2011 5:42:45 PM - 001028889546
If you are already a member of this site--good for you!! We appreciate your interest and support. When you're waiting for your child at the end of the day, you might spread the word so others will join, too!

Just wanted to say that we are really looking forward to Lily's first school. Would anyone be interested in a park play date Thursday after visitation? Weather permitting, of course. Just a chance for the kids, and parents, to get to know each other a bit before class starts? I don't know all the parks around here but Meadowlake seems good. Any better ideas?

Journal Page of the Month
We have finished our journals and they are ready to send home! You will finally get a chance to see your child's handiwork! On Celebration Day, May 7, you will be able to pick up the journal in our classroom!
L.E.A.F. Class Teacher Tip!
In the L.E.A.F. Class, we feel it is important to stress printing the children's names the "kindergarten" way. Therefore, when we begin, we will expect each student to print his/her name using an upper case first letter with the other letters being lower case. If you are not doing this at home, please help us by having your child practice like we do in class. If they have been printing in all upper case letters, it is not unusual for them to insist that there is only one way to print letters! We frequently hear, "My mom doesn't do it that way!" So, you can see that we will advance your child's skills much faster if there is consistency between home and school.
We use the Zaner-Bloser manuscript alphabet at Learning Tree.
F.Y.I.!
Don't forget to check your child's backpack each and every day!!!! The Red Robin Folder should be checked for papers that are to be kept at home and those things that are to be returned to school. Please help us help your child become responsibile and self sufficient so that the step up to kindergarten will be an easy one.
Also, when we send home a Let's Find Out paper, the children can complete the activity on the back page and bring it to school the next day. We will check it for them and they will receive a stamp or sticker for their effort!
"Smiles" of the Week
Each child will have the opportunity to be featured as our "SMILE OF THE WEEK" sometime during the year. This is not based on merit but is simply a matter of taking turns! You will receive a questionnaire approximately one week in advance that you will need to fill out with your child. Then, return the questionnaire and also your child's favorite story book by Friday of the same week. In this way, Mrs. Coffman will have time to prepare our special bulletin board for Monday of your child's very special week!
Everyone has now had a chance to star as one of our "Smiles of the Week"! We hope the experience was a positive one for each child!
Snacks
When it is your turn to bring snack, you will receive a note one week ahead of your scheduled time. This will give you time to do your shopping and ask any questions you might have about the requested items. We will celebrate each child's birthdays or 1/2 birthday sometime during the year.

School to Home Connection
This year, the L.E.A.F. Class is working on learning a few sight words. The words we will be emphasizing are from the pre-primer Dolch Word List. The Dolch Word List is a list of frequently used words compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. Dolch compiled the list based on children's books. The list contains 220 "service words" that have to be recognized in order to achieve reading fluency. Many of these words can't be sounded out using common phonics patterns and have to be learned by "sight." Although the list is divided into grades (ours is pre-primer), most Dolch words should be mastered by the end of 1st grade for English speaking readers.
Dolch words for May = yellow, you
We are also working on recognizing the days of the week and the words today, tomorrow, and yesterday.
Experiments
We have completed all of our experiments for the year. We have taken some time to review all the experiments we did and to remember all the fun we had through hands-on learning!
L.E.A.F. Class Laughs
We have been learning a lot of new vocabulary words this month. Some of them are rather a mouthful! When studying the world of ants recently, Mrs. Coffman made a "formicarium" for the children so they could observe how ants live up close and personal. When reviewing, she asked if anyone could remember the word that described the ant home we made. One little girl eagerly replied, "I think it's called "condiments!"
We have also learned a LOT about trees. We know evergreens keep their leaves or needles all year long. But, the trees that lose their leaves are called deciduous. One mother was discussing these two types of trees with her son. When asked what kind of trees lose their leaves in the fall, he proudly said, "deciduation!"
From the Teachers
Mrs. Coffman and Mrs. Ellis want to thank each family for sharing your child with us this year. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each child independently and as a part of the bigger group. It has been a fulfilling and exciting year and we hope your children have grown in every possible way! Thank you for your support!
Extended Day Happenings!
Parents--be sure to check the inside front cover of your child's library book. There will be a flourescent strip of orange paper that will tell you when the book is due back at school. On that date, return the book and journal in the "Book Buddy" and we will check them in. The bottom part of each journal page has a place for your child to draw a picture of his/her favorite part of the book. We would like for you to fill in the title, author, and summary for your child. (of course, you will do this with them!) In this way, the children can see "their" words put into print in complete sentences and you can be sure they comprehended the story. Very fun! We will keep the "Book Buddy" and journal on check-in day (usually a Friday) and return it to your child on the next library day (Monday).
We have been working our way through the story "The Lorax" in our current unit. Of course, we have been emphasizing ecology as our theme. We made truffula trees and will plant flowers on the school playground next week!
