what is your biggest bass
Longest smallie 19.5 inches
Longest Largemouth 23.75inches

Smallie was caught on a black/blue chatterbait with a Zoom vibra craw trailer

Largemouth was caught on a double propped buzzbait chart/white don't remember the manufacturer.

OK guys lure pass 2 is a done deal
Great, looking forward to it! Depending when it comes, obviously I may have a day or 2 delay because of thanksgiving, and I have a wedding on friday.  So I'll keep everyone posted, and will get it out as soon as possible.

Reading material
Great site for winter reading! THANKS! BTW....some of you may know that I'm rather fond of fishing Blade Baits this time of the year. I've found that by crimping down the barbs on the trebles, using a 20# braid & 17# fluro leader with these lures; you can use a steady pull and the hooks will bend enough to pop free of most snags. I do like the concept of those spreadable split rings....going to have to give them a whirl as well.  Smiley

Re: if this video doesn't give you the itch to fish, quit fishing
nice video, I take a trip to ottertail county every year and the bass fishing is awesome.  The lakes are pretty good size and not many people target bass so even the lakes that get alot of fishing pressure the bass fishing can still be outstanding cause most boats will be out there targeting panfish or walleye.  Bass fishing in MN is not something that alot of people do.

Did that for customer's many times. It is easy to look up a rewards member info, and credit them their discount amount.

In this case it wasn't rewards but literally a $10 off $50 purchase coupon, so they had nothing to go on but my word.  There was nothing to look up.

In that case, we would have been briefed that coupons had been sent out, and if you mentioned one, then you probably did have one. That was good customer service that guy provided. I just got one a month ago in the mail, so they still send them out..the bait monkey is calling me. Wink

I wish I got a 10 off 50. I always seem to get the 20 off 100 IF it's an online order. Once you get to 100 dollars, the shipping is 13 dollars so really it's only 7 dollars off 100.
Lost a bass from drag not set right. What do you do?
Randall wrote on Oct 31st, 2009 at 11:07pm:
...As far as the soft fleshy mouth and no hookset needed. I have seen a big bass take a crankbait bend the rod over get reeled in about twenty feet and just open it's mouth up and let the crankbait go. The hooks never set because of the amount of force, and lack of space in side the mouth a big bass has when it clamps down on a bait with a closed mouth. It's not even about the hooks getting penetration it's about moving the crankbait inside the closed mouth of a bass. On smaller bass the hooks usually catch more often on the way out. But with larger bass the hooks miss most of the time as the fish opens it's mouth because of the larger open areas created by a big open mouth of a large bass.

Real good stuff from Randall, as usual.

To add to the big bass expelling a lure easier -I don't have much specific experience here -but it would seem to me that a large mouth and set of gills behind it could expel a lure pretty forcefully.

As to soft fleshy mouths: Bass do have a lot of soft tissue and fine bones up front -except for one: the maxilla (maxillary). That slab of bone is the one area that can be tough to maybe impossible to penetrate -since it is also free to move, being attached by tendons.

I've had fish come to hand with just the point of a very sharp hook barely imbedded in the maxilla, only to have it fall out in hand. I'm guessing a large number of bass lost by hooks popping free at boatside (properly and not overly aggressively played) are due to this.
Bass Hallmark ornament
Yes, I have seen it.

Will not buy it as my wife lets me put only one LSU/Fishing ornament on the tree each year and so far LSU has been the winner.  Grin

Do you consider "live" bait cheating?
I definitely wouldn't call it cheating. I jus prefer usin artificial cause it's more fun.

Had the chance to talk to an old timer yesterday..
I know you said he had arthritis pretty bad, but maybe on a nice day you could ask him if he wanted to join you at the lake. He may not be able to fish long , so just a nice boat ride or a shady spot for some catfishing. I hope when i mature to the point of someone clling me "old timer" that a younger person would offer to take me.   good luck, fisher

The show ran from 1-2:30 CST.  The DirecTV program guide indicated it only ran from 1-2.  At 2 the guide asked if I wanted to record the College football show at 2.  I said no and the DVR shut off for the last 1/2 hour of the program.  What kind of goofy **** was that?

offshore structure
I would say dropshot also. A weightless plastic that wouldn't dig in or could be fished above it would be my next choice. Third choice would be a to fish lures on a three way swivel like a rapala that will stay up with a weight dragging in the snot grass. It would be like using a bottom bouncer for walleye just make sure you keep tention on your line to keep the swivel up.
The fish just stare at me
Wacky rig set up Wink
Crystal Clear
i have found that my best clear water choices have been long casts and natural colored unweighted soft plastics. watermelon, pumpkin, black and shad colors seem to work best.
i normally just adjust the hook size for how i want the bait to fall.
also clear, white or shad colored topwaters can give you distance and big bites. i go with subtle ones though... torpedo's, spittin image, devil horses etc. you can catch clear water fish on buzzbaits and the like but i think you can up your percentage more with subtlety.
CBS not airing TTBC in Orlando...!? I don't understand...
Our crappy CBS affiliate (WKMG) is not airing the Toyota Texas Bass Classic.  Instead, they are airing, get this:  INFOMERCIALS...  (for Bosley Hair restoration and some age cream).

I mean come on.  I live in Orlando for goodness sakes, home to a major fishing demographic.  How do we expect Bass Fishing to grow as a sport and become more mainstream, if it can't get mainstream media coverage!?? and we lose out to infomercials...infuriating...  LAME, LAME, LAME. WKMG you suck....  I am calling them right now to give them a piece of my mind.

I agree, your parents probably have a block on pictures and certain websites. Tough luck. Looks like you'll have to create your own big bass pictures.

Tube jig fisherman.
We had an awesome day yesterday with Smallies on tubes and beavers in 41 degree water.  2 of us fishing about 7 hours wound up with 6 20" or better and another 9 that were 19" or better.  Even got 1 LM about 18 1/2" in that 41 degree water, but she came on jig and Paca Craw combo.
What would be your bait and/or method of choice for this
The 4 lures I use under those conditions (shallow water) are;
1. Basstrix BaitFry, fly lined on 6 lb spinning tackle.
2. Schurmy Shad*, hollow aluminum spoon.
3. Nail head worm; 5" shad worm (split tail), 3/32 nail weight and #1 Gamakatsu weedless finesse hook, collar rigged, on 10 Lb FC.
4. Huddleston 4" shad swimbait.
Whenever bass are feeding on a specific baitfish like threadfin shad, it's match the hatch or use live shad.

Yeah, there are ways to "educate" the people around you.  I've had numerous occasions when I've been fishing deep structure, and another boat will pull into exactly where I'm fishing.  I let them know what I'm doing, and they are interfering with that.  99% of the time they are apologetic, and figured I was casting towards shore, which is what they were going to do.  I tell them they can come right inside of where I'm fishing, and have all the shore they want.

Agree, We should aways have creative ways to say something.

I have never pulled up on anyone, even as a newbie boater-deep down I knew it wasn't right, this is why I didn't do it, then again I try to treat others like I want to be treated.

Even that is a tough call.

This time of year, we bass chasers seem to intersect the with the perch jerkers up here.  I know I've been guilty of screwing up, thinking they were doing one thing, when they were really doing another.  I do what the guy that cuts me off, and apologize, and try to keep the peace.  I now know to stay wayyyyy clear if I think they are perch jerking.  Those guys are very fussy, and they will blame anyone around them for turning the bite off, including my electronics, paddling, or my bright kayak itself, LOL.

I know in a tournament, that may be a tough thing to do, but really, structure fishing is usually about timing and agitation, so it may be easier to wait, or fish another spot.

Whatever works....its just fishing.  Keep it cool.

How long before it can sustain life
yea, it should be ready pretty quickly, especially if they had planned to stock it.  Think fishtank, or koi pond.... almost as soon as you fill it up, you can put the fish in.  Most of the time you just wait for the water temp. to even out.
making sure your bass looks her best for photos
That is a great tip Paul, thanks.

I would like to add, make sure you are using this technique when it is your legal bass season.  I know in PA, before the middle of June, this would be considered a "no-no" as you are required to immediately release a fish (photos are ok, but you can't put the fish in any type of container).
Where do the "spots" hang as compared to smallies?
Things really must be different in the SE.  We have spots, smallies and largemouth in all of our lakes.  The spots haven't increased near like the smallmouth in the last decade or so.  In fact Table Rock is the only lake with a really good spot population.

Fishing oriented charities??
I'm not sure if anyone here has ever had the opportunity (or the need) to visit one of the many Shriner's hospitals.  Here is a link to a webpage that shows all of the various hospitals that the Shriner's operate.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

It is well worth a little of your time to click on a hospital location near you.  If you may need their help, or know of a family that has a child that could use their help, pass along this information.  Many local Shriner's groups hold special clinics locally to help qualify children in need of help.

And the hospitals?  They are almost beyond description.  The staff of doctors, nurses, and all of the other specialists are some of the most dedicated and caring people you could ever meet.  ALL children are treated 100% FREE OF CHARGE.  Hospital wards are segregated by age groups, with rooms dedicated for either boys or girls.  When the patients are able to, the staff has a variety of programs to help these children keep busy.  They don't just lay around, but are given the chance to stay as active as possible. They even provide for a parent to stay right in the child's room, or next door if a Dad wants to visit their daughter.

So how do I know about all of this?  Because I am a Shriner's Dad.  My daughter spent time off and on at the Chicago hospital for a number of years.  I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say, the Shriner's hospital was her only option.  They came through when so many other doctors couldn't.  These folks will always hold a speical place in my heart, and they get all of the financial support I can give them.

pH
here is an interesting article:

To change the pH for the pond he suggested using an air pump. The lower pH was caused by the hot temps and lowered water volume and to much fish by product. In the article above it talks about a layer that has poor oxygen levels down deep because of the fish by product. (the fish by product would act the same as weed decay on the pH)

I would agree that temperature would not be a factor in changing pH other than the fact that the change in season effects what the plants are doing in their life cycle. Like fall turn over and colder temps that kill underwater vegetation. I also don't feel that there would be a set buffer between good pH and poor pH areas. Like a change in water temp because of depth. I do feel that the farther away from the acid producing substance the better the pH. I believe fish will migrate to the more favorable pH.

Why would this be important?
Well areas that where clear that become muddy because of rain or run off will have poor pH and fish will move to clearer water. So if you where fishing a cove and catching fish on the deep side or channel side of the cove and the mud rolls in fish that where on one side of the cove might migrate to the other side because of clearer water and better pH. If you where fishing an weed flat that the state comes through and sprays it. The fish will migrate to areas that have more favorable pH which could be a depression area or the edge of the weeds. If the fish was sitting in pH that was 7.5 and it drops to 5.0 the fish will migrate to an area that is close and has the same 7.5 pH. The same would also be true that if that 7.5 pH was in 7ft of water the fish would more than likely be sitting in the same depth in the new area.  Even if it meant that they suspended in 7 ft water in a tree top for instance. If air changes the pH of the water then areas that have more air like living weed growth or windy banks will have higher oxygen content. Because of this the fish would not need to move as far to find better pH. I would think oxygen producing areas would have a buffer effect to the acidic areas more so then normal areas that the acidic water slowly mixes or gets diluted. In the spring time areas that have good pH would be the first areas that fish will move up to stage and spawn. As the lake pH gets more favorable farther up the lake the rest of the lake fish begin to move up.

Any thoughts? Huh

Bass and Seawalls
Lot of good reasons mentioned.  Another reason is the  heat that is retained from the previous day.  Fish, not only bass like to hang out there early morning to warm up.
What method do you use when you want to quickly cover deeper water.

It's late fall, but any time of year I see a sonar pic like Randall posted, I break out a jigging spoon!  Nothing catches active fish grouped in one spot faster.

I agree. Here are two fish from that school that I posted the photo of. We also had one larger than these that broke off at the boat as well. All caught on the spoon.

Re: Attracting new members
Another thing we might do is consider running an ad in the local paper.
Re: Attracting new members
I think the Youth Tourny would be a good idea because not only would it be a good community service, it would get the younger generation interested in fishing. The young folks are where the future is at. It's much easier to get a 16 yr. old interested than a older fisherman that has gotten burned out. We might could have the youth tourny one month instead of our regular tourny. That would give us somewhat of a break in the middle of the season. I personally will probably be fishin somewhere most of time but I do know that with our 9 tourny per year schedule, folks seem to get burned out. We might consider just going on a fishin trip for a weekend one month instead of a tourny. We could still have 6 or 7 tournys for the competition part of the club. Maybe 6 regular season tournys and a classic. Just a thought. I'm game for most anything.   RT
Attracting new members
We had a succesful year in 09.  However, our tournament participation has dwindled.  We need to be thinking of ways to attract new members.  Some suggestions are: (1)Youth tournament  (2)Buddy or Pick-a partner Tournament.  Other thoughts?

Rez Rules - sent by Randy Thomas

Ya’ll may have already seen this but this is what is posted on the    http://www.therez.ms/Regulations.htm  site.    I  don’t think this is anything new……maybe they intend to enforce it differently. I suppose the question for us is…..Does the Leake Co. Bass Club fit under part 4.2.4  ?

4.2 Tournaments, Contests and Rodeos.
4.2.1
It shall be unlawful to promote or hold on the waters of the Reservoir any fishing tournament, contest, rodeo or other fishing event without first registering the event with the General Manager of the District on forms prescribed for such purpose (including name of sponsor, fees payable to sponsor and others, copies of promotional material, date and times of event, areas of Reservoir involved and other relevant information).
4.2.2 Additionally, it shall be unlawful to promote or hold on the waters of the Reservoir any fishing tournament, contest, rodeo or other fishing event involving fifty (50) or more boats without first securing written authorization therefor from the General Manager of the District, payment of a fee to the District in the amount of four dollars ($4.00) for each boat involved in the tournament and providing a satisfactory certificate of public liability insurance. Authorization is discretionary.
4.2.3 For events involving fifty or more boats, written application and payment shall be received by the General Manager of the District no later than sixty days in advance of the event. For events involving fewer than fifty boats, written application shall be received by the General Manager of the District no later than thirty days in advance of the event. No event will be scheduled until receipt by the District of the complete written application and, if applicable, payment of the permit fee and delivery of certificate of insurance. Events will not be scheduled more than one (1) year in advance.
4.2.4 Bona fide local civic, charitable, cultural and governmental organizations not operated for profit for federal income tax purposes who verify in writing to the District that one hundred percent of the funds payable from participants, sponsors and others in the event will be paid to the organization and used in sponsoring the event and in furthering the tax exempt purposes of the organization, are exempt from payment of the permit fee but are subject to all other provisions of this section.
4.2.5 Fishing tournaments, contests, rodeos and other fishing events shall be scheduled to encompass any weekend of the month unless the Board of Directors has declared certain weekends closed to such events for public health, safety or welfare as designated in the minutes of the Board from time to time.
4.2.6 Each violation of this regulation shall constitute a misdemeanor and shall be punishable by a fine of not more than One Thousand Dollars ($1,000).

Thanks for the info.  Barney says Wheel-In is the only place in Carthage that sells gasoline without ethanol.
Ethanol in your boat moter

Ethanol Gasoline in Marine Engines

By: Lakes Online
Article Date: 11/19/2008
Your boat’s greatest enemy may be its fuel. There are a number of reports in the press about the negative effects of ethanol in marine fuel tanks -- this is a concern for boat owners.

The problem began when many areas began banning the use of methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), replacing it with ethanol blends. This ”new” fuel, referred to as E-10 (10 percent ethanol, 90 percent unleaded gasoline), was not designed with the fuel needs of marine engines in mind. Unlike fuel tanks in autos, boat tanks are vented to the air. Ethanol attracts a significant portion of its weight in water, especially in warm, humid climates. When this occurs, the ethanol and the water separate from the fuel and settle at the bottom of the tank. The result is goo in the fuel systems, clogged filters and stalled engines. If that isn’t bad enough, ethanol has negative effects on fiberglass tanks because the ethanol dissolves fiberglass.

Ethanol will attach to water and that combination will sink to the bottom of the tank, separating from the gasoline. When the engine is started it will be operating on only ethanol and water. In fuel systems where oil and fuel are premixed, no lubrication is supplied to the engine. Without lubrication, engine failure will be immediate. In older two-cycle engines that use premixed fuel, the ethanol has a tendency of cleaning the oil off the cylinder walls resulting in wear and overheating.

Newer outboard motors are calibrated for ethanol gas; however, older outboards could experience problems. Ethanol can reduce the octane numbers by as much as three percent. This can result in pinging or poor performance. Be sure to inspect your fuel filters often. When you are running your boat regularly, be sure to keep the tanks full. This will reduce the amount of air flow in and out of the tank with changes in temperature. At the present time there is no practical additive that can correct the separation issue. The only real solution is to keep the water out of the tank. If you are going to put your boat up for any length of time, completely drain the tank. If that is not possible, fill it as full as possible and do whatever is necessary to keep air out of the tank.

Some of the plastic/butyl/composite hoses, o-rings and gaskets that can be found throughout the propulsion system can be affected by the properties of ethanol. Keep a close eye out for any premature deterioration in these items. In addition, clean and/or change fuel filters regularly. In fact, some boat owners have added a second filter in their systems for protection
