Suggestions needed on finding the BIG girls
It's not unusual for state record size bass to be caught from small lakes, the SD record 9.3 came from a small pit lake.
It's not unusual for anglers to exaggerate the size of the bass they catch, it's part of fishing in general. Few bass anglers get the opportunity to catch and handle big bass and most would over estimate a 7 lb bass to be 10 lbs before weighing it.
I don't believe small lakes that freeze over for 3 to 4 months have a good population of big bass, the forage base may not support the growth. There is always a possibility that a few big bass live in any lake,  it's survival of the fittest.
WRB
How long can bass live out of water???
Bass survival is almost directly proportional to the temperature of water.

I remember as a child having a ~5lb smallie out of water for at least 15 min, and it swam away after some reviving. It may have (and probably did) experienced delayed mortality, but it was alive when we released it. This was in the dead of winter.

Late Fall Pattern Help?
You should be able to pick up some fish on the ends of the points. Fish tend to group up there before they move out deep. You might want to try slow rolling a jig down the point just fast enough to keep it off the bottom and light enough to keep it slow. I have caught tons of fish with this technique this time of the year. Make sure you are out in the deeper water so that it runs all the way down the point. This will help to pin point where the bass are using the point to help narrow your efforts with other presentations when you find them.

The shaky head will get you some bites on Smith Mtn, no doubt about it.

A lot of those fish were also bed fish.

I think almost everybody was catching spawners except for KVD. He was throwing swimbaits, shaky heads, jerkbaits, crankbaits, topwaters, you name it. He recognized that the shad spawn was on and capitalized on something that nobody else paid much attention to because of the bass spawn going on at the time. KVD was fishing for actively feeding fish while the others were plucking bucks off the beds.

That was one of the tournaments that KVD's pure fishing ability and decision making really shined through. He took the situation at hand one step further than anyone else was willing to go and he carried home the big $$.

Words of caution

Removing Hook from Fish
Yes, i think pliers are a must when you are fishing crankbaits.

Also the article Roadwarrior mentioned is VERY VERY helpful. I seem to get gut hooks often and with using the technique that he mentioned it comes right out!

If you remember that article of getting the hook out i dont think you should ever kill a fish just by catching it.

Fearing the health of my spot
But really? What is the risk? Typical pumps hold roughly a quart of oil, or if a two-stroke this size looked about a gallon tank of mixed. If a quart of oil or a gallon fuel got into this 10acre lake what is the risk?

There is a quarry in amall town south of here. The story goes, to provide cover for his fish, the owner sank 2 old broken down dumptrucks (before you boys freak and start calling BS, it gets better). Well the old boy didn't drain the tanks on either contaminating the quarry for, I have heard, 5 to 15 years depending on the storyteller. This quarry is 90 feet deep at it's deepest and there has not been a fish caught in years. Of course the caveat is he was a mean old dude who NEVER let anyone fish there. The property has recently been sold to a nursery. I am going to ask them the next time I am at their more local offfice if anyone has been fishing there and if any luck.

I know this is a terrible situation and owners and authorities have been notified. How bad is it going to be, it was a great spot.

Thanks for the understanding - Twitch
Where do the "spots" hang as compared to smallies?
Gregory,  I don't think the DNR could state something like that in an article without the poop hitting the fan.  Once spots are in the lake their really is no way to get them out..  Alot of the north GA lakes used to be primarily Largemouth lakes.  Now many of them are 90% spots 10% largemouth.  Even some of the famed Largemouth Lakes like West Point are quickly becoming known as spot lakes.  IT will more than likely trickle down the Chattahootchie towards Eufaula and Seminole.  Everything on the Coosa already has a significant Spotted Bass population.

Mike
What's wrong with this bass - 2??

me and my fishing partner fish a small pond (5-10 acres) and it has a great population of shad, bass and bluegill.  we do great catching bass when the sun is high and bright but as soon as the shadows hit we can't get a nibble.  mostly catch them on lipless cranks and shallow running cranks.  any suggestions, i'm running out of stuff to throw.

max depth- 8'
moderate stain, 1-2' vis
trashy bottom with leaf decay and black bottom, scattered brush around the edges but little middle cover or structure.
water temp today was 68-69 deg.

Your shad are more than likely threadfin shad that feed on phytoplankton. The phytoplankton rises during the bright sunlight hours near the water surface and the shad follow their food source. The reason this is important is to understand why shad school in open water during the mid day to feed and hide in cover during low light and dark hours.
In a small lake predator prey activity is intense, survival of the fittest; the bass eat every prey fish available; shad, bluegill young bass and crawdads.
Threadfin shad have low tolerant to water colder than 45 degrees and die off in colder water.
Look for the bass to be tight to brush cover during low light hours and roaming the lake during bright sunny day light hours and being active this time of year during the mid day and afternoon period.
A wide variety of lures should work.

Been keeping notes since the ice broke last March.  I fish one lake so that elimiates a lot of variables and I can pretty much establish some conditional patterns with my data.  Kinda fun.

If a person were to keep records for more than one lake, I suppose it would be easy enough to keep a separate notebook for each lake, or place of fishing, say maybe a single subject spiral bound notebook for each lake??  That way any data you get will only apply to the one place, and any similar data on a different lake with different results won't conflict with the first, but could be easily compared so you see if one lake is similar to another or if the same conditions in a different place create similar or different results.  Just an idea, but I've never kept records on fishing.  Think I'll start now though.

Lost a bass from drag not set right. What do you do?
Since I started with egg beater reels when I set the hook with my bait casters I automatically put my thumb on the reel spool pretty hard. I can get a good hook set and keep a lighter drag setting.
Just Wanted to Share My Thoughts about Bass Resource
Great post Blee. I agree 100%.
I'm done! Can't take it any longer!
Hopefully this makes u feel better, its a true story.......the largest bass I caught this year was only 3 lbs. 2oz. And I put a lot of time in from march to october. The up side is my total # of fish is much, much higher than last year. There is a big fish out there somewhere, hope you find it. Good luck.
If you were to track your bass fishing what is relevant?
That is a great log. totally missed it up there. Thanks for the ideas guys.

I am trying to use my inner geek to help me a bit. I think i can code something real quick and my thought was to push data into a database and do some fun analysis for trends. I figure. I do not want to recreate a day per say but to see if i can capture as much data during a period as possible and determine trends.

Find a way to merge my inner geek with my fishing geek.

A lot of this comes from fishing patterns on my home lake. They just do not seem to make sense sometimes to me. I think what it is, I am missing a variable somewhere that I do not take into consideration. I mean I have gotten a LOT better at finding the fish, but not good enough for my taste yet.
How do you hold your fish?
From Today's Outing, I found this Community Pond right off the freeway in my hometown. Pulled over, 5th Cast in grabbed this guy. Lipped him as usual.

Yep, it sounds like a war zone every Saturday in the Fall.

Crankin' clear, weedy lakes
The 'ghost' colors seem to dominate clear water for me (ghost minnow, ghost perch, etc.) during sunny or mostly sunny days.  During heavy cloud cover or while deep cranking I use your usual opaque shad or perch colors, due to the lack of light penetration.  I preach a faster retrieve while also periodically ripping your crank with a quick sweep of the rod (I do this in stained water as well).  The bait that instantly came to mind when you mentioned the conditions you fish is the Lucky Craft BDS 1 in ghost sunfish.  I guarantee it to work.  It can be a hard color to find though...Tackle Warehouse sells out frequently.

Here is the larger BDS 3 in the ghost sunfish color...

Brackish Water
Tidal fishing timing is extremely critical, tidal fish move a lot but can be very predictable. When you catch them pay attention to time and tidal level and get you a tidal chart. Some spots are good on high tide, some on low tide, and some spots are good in between. Your job is to determine when a spot is best and then to duplicate the timing in the future.

Low tide positions fish on the outer edge of cover while high tide positions fish farther into cover.

Re: Attracting new members
Another thing we might do is consider running an ad in the local paper.
Re: Attracting new members
I think the Youth Tourny would be a good idea because not only would it be a good community service, it would get the younger generation interested in fishing. The young folks are where the future is at. It's much easier to get a 16 yr. old interested than a older fisherman that has gotten burned out. We might could have the youth tourny one month instead of our regular tourny. That would give us somewhat of a break in the middle of the season. I personally will probably be fishin somewhere most of time but I do know that with our 9 tourny per year schedule, folks seem to get burned out. We might consider just going on a fishin trip for a weekend one month instead of a tourny. We could still have 6 or 7 tournys for the competition part of the club. Maybe 6 regular season tournys and a classic. Just a thought. I'm game for most anything.   RT
Attracting new members
We had a succesful year in 09.  However, our tournament participation has dwindled.  We need to be thinking of ways to attract new members.  Some suggestions are: (1)Youth tournament  (2)Buddy or Pick-a partner Tournament.  Other thoughts?

Rez Rules - sent by Randy Thomas

Ya’ll may have already seen this but this is what is posted on the    http://www.therez.ms/Regulations.htm  site.    I  don’t think this is anything new……maybe they intend to enforce it differently. I suppose the question for us is…..Does the Leake Co. Bass Club fit under part 4.2.4  ?

4.2 Tournaments, Contests and Rodeos.
4.2.1
It shall be unlawful to promote or hold on the waters of the Reservoir any fishing tournament, contest, rodeo or other fishing event without first registering the event with the General Manager of the District on forms prescribed for such purpose (including name of sponsor, fees payable to sponsor and others, copies of promotional material, date and times of event, areas of Reservoir involved and other relevant information).
4.2.2 Additionally, it shall be unlawful to promote or hold on the waters of the Reservoir any fishing tournament, contest, rodeo or other fishing event involving fifty (50) or more boats without first securing written authorization therefor from the General Manager of the District, payment of a fee to the District in the amount of four dollars ($4.00) for each boat involved in the tournament and providing a satisfactory certificate of public liability insurance. Authorization is discretionary.
4.2.3 For events involving fifty or more boats, written application and payment shall be received by the General Manager of the District no later than sixty days in advance of the event. For events involving fewer than fifty boats, written application shall be received by the General Manager of the District no later than thirty days in advance of the event. No event will be scheduled until receipt by the District of the complete written application and, if applicable, payment of the permit fee and delivery of certificate of insurance. Events will not be scheduled more than one (1) year in advance.
4.2.4 Bona fide local civic, charitable, cultural and governmental organizations not operated for profit for federal income tax purposes who verify in writing to the District that one hundred percent of the funds payable from participants, sponsors and others in the event will be paid to the organization and used in sponsoring the event and in furthering the tax exempt purposes of the organization, are exempt from payment of the permit fee but are subject to all other provisions of this section.
4.2.5 Fishing tournaments, contests, rodeos and other fishing events shall be scheduled to encompass any weekend of the month unless the Board of Directors has declared certain weekends closed to such events for public health, safety or welfare as designated in the minutes of the Board from time to time.

Thanks for the info.  Barney says Wheel-In is the only place in Carthage that sells gasoline without ethanol.
Ethanol in your boat moter

Ethanol Gasoline in Marine Engines

By: Lakes Online
Article Date: 11/19/2008
Your boat’s greatest enemy may be its fuel. There are a number of reports in the press about the negative effects of ethanol in marine fuel tanks -- this is a concern for boat owners.

The problem began when many areas began banning the use of methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), replacing it with ethanol blends. This ”new” fuel, referred to as E-10 (10 percent ethanol, 90 percent unleaded gasoline), was not designed with the fuel needs of marine engines in mind. Unlike fuel tanks in autos, boat tanks are vented to the air. Ethanol attracts a significant portion of its weight in water, especially in warm, humid climates. When this occurs, the ethanol and the water separate from the fuel and settle at the bottom of the tank. The result is goo in the fuel systems, clogged filters and stalled engines. If that isn’t bad enough, ethanol has negative effects on fiberglass tanks because the ethanol dissolves fiberglass.

Ethanol will attach to water and that combination will sink to the bottom of the tank, separating from the gasoline. When the engine is started it will be operating on only ethanol and water. In fuel systems where oil and fuel are premixed, no lubrication is supplied to the engine. Without lubrication, engine failure will be immediate. In older two-cycle engines that use premixed fuel, the ethanol has a tendency of cleaning the oil off the cylinder walls resulting in wear and overheating.

Newer outboard motors are calibrated for ethanol gas; however, older outboards could experience problems. Ethanol can reduce the octane numbers by as much as three percent. This can result in pinging or poor performance. Be sure to inspect your fuel filters often. When you are running your boat regularly, be sure to keep the tanks full. This will reduce the amount of air flow in and out of the tank with changes in temperature. At the present time there is no practical additive that can correct the separation issue. The only real solution is to keep the water out of the tank. If you are going to put your boat up for any length of time, completely drain the tank. If that is not possible, fill it as full as possible and do whatever is necessary to keep air out of the tank.

Some of the plastic/butyl/composite hoses, o-rings and gaskets that can be found throughout the propulsion system can be affected by the properties of ethanol. Keep a close eye out for any premature deterioration in these items. In addition, clean and/or change fuel filters regularly. In fact, some boat owners have added a second filter in their systems for protection
