Grocery deals

I have to share my most recent shopping trip deals. I normally try to get to Rainbow foods on Wednesdays because they double coupons up to $1 (so $2 off), up to five coupons per transaction. I went this morning and spent $23 on $70 worth of groceries. Mainly I get things we would get anyway (like cereal, laundry detergent, etc), but when I find a good deal I can get things we like to get but never do because of the price (like Naked Juice, Tide laundry detergent, and salad dressing).
Here are a few coupon and deal blog sites for those interested:

Tuesday Ultrasound

We had an ultrasound on January 19th and found out we're having a boy. We also found out we're probably about 18 weeks along, so the due date will likely be June 20th. Maybe he'll be born on Mat's birthday, the 22nd? Peter is excited and we are too. We're busy coming up with names. See him on an ultrasound makes it a lot more real.

Amish Friendship Bread or "Herman" Recipes

I've got some recipes for those Amish Friendship Bread lovers out there. In my cookbook, Amish-Country Cookbook Volume III, it is called Herman. Here's one for Herman Cinnamon Rolls that are smelling so good in our oven right now:

Human Playdough

Mat came up with a new game yesterday. He sculpted Peter into human play dough. Peter then had a few turns and made lots of interesting creations out of Mat. I never knew his boy moved like that until Peter forced it to. There is a picture in its own album above. Mat is great at distracting Peter when I need to get dinner on the table or something like that.

January 2010

As some may have already made resolutions, here's mine:

1. Don't gain as much with this baby as I did with Peter.

2. Keep up this site more (I need a lot of encouragement on this)

3. Memorize Bible verses with Peter

Finally

Well, I've had some troubles uploading and got frustrated and stopped a number of times. I've finally plowed through the process and gotten most of our pictures up, not only from Cambodia, but all the pictures since. I still have to sort through a bunch of pictures from the Siem Reap part of our trip, so hopefully those will come soon.

First Installment

Our first installment of pictures of Cambodia has arrived. They are labeled for your benefit. Hopefully you will get a little idea of what each picture is from the name given it. Future installments will arrive soon.

Kitty

No, we didn't get a kitten, but I wanted to post a quick random post about a day Peter and I had. I woke up to a cat meowing almost constantly. We got ready for our day and then were off to the park for a picnic. We came out the back door and found the cat next door was the one making noise and loved the attention we gave it through the fence. After getting to the front I realized I forgot the keys (like I normally do), so we went back upstairs. We came out and there was a cat in our backyard. It was the same cat, but I was not sure if it really was the neighbors or had just been hanging out in their yard. It followed us around as we gathered materials for our time at the park and came into the garage when we got the tricycle. The cat in Cambodia (Cookie) would always meow a lot when it was hungry, so we got it a little milk and pet it for a little while before heading of to our picnic day.

After a few hours at the park, Peter and I came home and who ran up to us when we got there? The kitty of course. We played a little more, then Peter was off to naptime. When Peter woke up, all he could think of was that kitty, so we headed out to our back yard (I had compost stuff to bring out anyway). The cat was still there. So we spent probably an hour with the cat. It even found a way to get into our home when we got it some more milk. It must have followed us in. Finally we saw one of the neighbor girls and asked it was her cat. It was.

We walked back to our yard after giving her the kitty. Peter had his head down low and said in the saddest voice, "I really want my kitty back." I'm sure we'll be seeing kitty again. She's been staying indoors lately though, so who knows if Peter will ever get his kitty back. The request for a pet has started in our home.

Cambodia Prayer Letter

I can't seem to add our prayer letter very easily due to character restrictions, so if you have not received our prayer letter and would like to, please do let us know.

As of late...

Well as you can see not a whole lot has been published. I haven't taken much for pictures. It's just an unpublished season in our lives, but I think that's ok. We are in a waiting season right now and I think that has helped us to gain patience and grow closer as a family.

We are still waiting to see what is happening with Cambodia. Many are out of the office in the summer and so we haven't heard much about our schedule or what to prepare. The Petersen's mentioned to go through the book Peacemaker by Ken Sande. Other than that, we just know we're going. Please pray that we would be ready for what God will prepare for us in this trip.

I did publish a few pictures. Some old favorites and funny ones from May. May was trying to be the music man or something. And Peter loves his new tie from his cousin Benjamin. We are so blessed by those Deans. Peter definitely owes his good taste in clothes to them.

Then we have an album from this last weekend. It was Sham's graduation. Friday night we watched her walk across the stage and today (Sunday) we went to the Eritrean church her family attends and celebrated afterward. We arrived at 10:30am. Church got over at 1:00pm. I've never been to such a long service, but was not bored even though I didn't understand a word of it. Sham translated some for us. Merhawi played keyboard. Even they're brother Mose preached a bit. We'll have to go again soon, but I think I'm going to steal a spot right next to Sham next time that way I can hear the translation. After the service we joined in a wonderful meal. The food is pretty much like Ethiopian food. Even Peter did well. He made some new friends. It was a great day.

Cambodia Update

We received medical clearance for a trip to Cambodia this summer. We also received some possible dates that have been confirmed today (July 16 - August 14). So we're trying this again and it isn't too far off either. Please pray for the opportunity and the preparation.

April

There was lots going on this last month. Easter, birthdays, outings, housing, lots of calls for people that want to see an apartment, Mat starting a new job, starting seeds in the garden, and looking into a trip to Cambodia.

I've added four albums of pictures that cover much of our month. We had some good family time at como zoo and got some 3 year pictures of Peter. Can you believe he's three now?

We've also got a birthday album of things we did on Peter's birthday. He's in his birthday suit planning what he wants on his cake. Then we've got a birthday lunch with Grandma Mena, yeah and he has a kleenex in his nose too. We let him pick what he wanted to do for supper and so we went to the rainforest cafe. Then we topped it all off with a birthday cake at small group.

Our Easter album includes a trip to Aitkin for the weekend. It was nice to spend time with the Lanhams, Al and Violet and Emma, and our newest family members Sham, Merhawi and Yosief. We had an egg hunt, colored eggs, and some great fellowship around the dinner table. I don't have pictures of our time with resurrection eggs and Easter morning celebrating the risen Christ.

Then comes Peter's birthday party. This last weekend we enjoyed some wonderful weather in Como park. We had great family and friends time and had a lot of yummy pot luck food too. And even though we asked for no gifts, what do you know, we came home with a load. Peter is enjoying the new fun though.

No More Nuk Party

Peter had a "No More Nuk Party" Thursday night. He was super excited about it. The plan was to make a cake and put his nuks on top, then he could lick them off and throw them in the trash can. It sounded like a good idea, but it has not averted grief about the loss of his treasured nuk. He cried a good amount last night and didn't take much of a nap today, but it has helped that he received a present from his Bapa Dick and Grandma Marilyn. It's a little monkey named Vines. Peter especially loves it because he comes with an online code just like a Webkins. So now instead of a nuk addiction, we have an online gamer.

Peter is sure growing lately though. He's been quite nurturing lately. He loves to tell me I look like a princess and that I look like Cinderella (he has a Chinese book from the library about Cinderella right now and supposedly my long hair looks like princess hair). He also has been taking care of a pretend baby all day, his first teddy bear. It's quite sweet to see his developments and I may even like this stage more than his five month stage that I thought was great. Anyway no more babbling, but if you see Peter congratulate him on being such a big boy.

Florida

Yeay again for free plane tickets via getting bumped off of a flight back in August.

Mat had spring break last week and so we planned a last minute trip to Florida. Mat had been thinking of going for some time to visit ECHO (http://www.echonet.org/). We were definitely impressed with our visit to this organization. Mat is working with ECHO to possibly finish his coursework requirements with them. Mat is also interested in their internship program. This would be separate from his coursework but would bring him plenty of practical knowledge. Check out their website.

As for the rest of our time in Florida, we spent lots of time at the beach since Peter could not get enough. We flew in Tuesday and checked in to a hotel then we were off to Ft. Myers beach. We dug up a crab hole and made some holes in the sand. We also saw a dolphin swimming a little ways out. The next morning we got things packed up, checked out and drove around. We found an interesting nature preserve and had a fun walk around there. Then we headed to a ferry that would take us to Cayo Costa State Park.

Cayo Costa was pretty great. We got there about 4pm and headed straight to the beach. Peter was quite brave in the small gulf waves and had plenty of fun "swimming" as he calls it. He went under once because he tripped. He didn't get up right away, so Mat pulled him out. He hadn't swallowed water and none got up his nose and the first thing he said was "I swimmed." He loved digging holes and watching the waves take them. He also loved throwing shells out into the deep. We camped there for the night (it was 60 at night and 80 during the day). The next day we had until 3pm, so we headed to the beach again, there wasn't a whole lot else to do and we really enjoyed our time out there walking around and finding interesting shells.

It is amazing to see all the unique shells. Only a God like ours could imagine such interesting creations and designs. Sand bars are also quite the wonder and so much fun. We walked out about 75 yards, Peter on Mat's shoulders. Mat found some sand dollars out there and I ran back in to try and get a picture.

As for the rest of the day, we saw some more dolphins up close on our ferry ride back to pine island and then checked into our koa campsite (where we slept for the remainder of our time). Unless you are in an rv or cabin, this is not the place to be. We were placed next to the water treatment (which smelled like sewer) and there was a streetlight on our tent all night. We had great sleep there though. We sure tired ourselves out each day. After checking in, we got some ice cream at Matlacha Island (check out google maps and click on satelite view if you want to see what these places look like). The ice cream was from a small Ft. Myer's company and it was good, especially since we decided to mainly eat pbj's and breakfast bars for the trip. Yum.

Friday we woke up and headed right to ECHO. It is difficult to describe our experience there. We did get a tour of their nursery. They do a lot of research for different farming regions (monsoon, hillside, rainforest, arid, lowland, and urban). They talked about the problem solving they do and how they assist missionaries and the poor farmers of the world). Here's one interesting thing about urban farming (for those that have no land): they took a long piece of carpet and covered it with a layer of dirt. Then inthe middle, they clear a space for a 5 gallon bucket. In the lid a pencil sized hole is drilled. It's filled with water then tipped over, then just enough water saturates the bottow and they are then able to plant vegetables, etc. We would like to go again one day.

As for the remainder of Friday, we went out to Sanibel Island, and we can see why it's so touristy. We really enjoyed the beach there too, more seashells than any of the other beaches and lots of sandbars. I think the amount of people was a little overwhelming, but we enjoyed it. Then we went out to eat. Since our main meal was pbj's this last week, we loved the food. I splurged and got the Island Cow's "Holy Cow" which was enough to feed all of us. It was every kind of seafood fried in a sweet batter. Wow did I like the snapper, calamari, and clams. The shrimp was also excellent. Fresh seafood can't be beat. Mat got some grouper and though it sounds boring after my experience, I think he was the wiser for it. However, I did dream about my food all the way home on our airplane the next day.

So that was our trip to Florida. Grand and fairly cheap. If we ever go back (the only reason being echo), I would definitely visit the Island Cow again. Yum.

My favorite time of day

My most favorite time of day is when I can hear Peter and his daddy playing. Normally I'm getting supper finished or cleaning up the kitchen. I laugh to myself the entire time.

Today they had a lot of play time since Mat is on spring break. Mat taught Peter "Goin' on a Bear Hunt" today and, as usual, they wrestled quite a bit.

Soon I will have another favorite time of day... time to play outside. I love the changes in seasons! 54 F today.

Tuesday test run

Last Tuesday we decided to try out a curriculum for Peter's preschool years. Someone we know let us borrow their copy. It is called Five in a Row. Basically we'll read one book each week. The same book each day and then focus on a different activity/subject that day. We read Ping. Peter loved it. We had actually scheduled our day much like a school day. He's not ready to do it every day, but he liked it for that day.

I was so proud of his when we had chore time after our lesson time (on buoyancy). We folded clothes and he folded every wash cloth perfectly (at times with frustration) and then sorted the socks, the big ones were Daddy's, the middle sized were Mommy's and the little ones were Peter's. What a great helper that day!

I look forward to more days like this.

Jesus is the Boss

Last weekend, Mat and I went to a marriage retreat. Very great. My parents were willing to take Peter for the weekend. Peter has been a little bossy lately, so while we were getting ready to leave we asked him, "Who is the boss, Peter or Grandpa and Grandma?" He thought for a little while and you could tell he didn't want to say Grandpa and Grandma. Finally, he stated very mater-of-fact, "Jesus is the boss."
I'm glad he's been listening. Thank you Bethlehem for great teaching in nursery.

Sunday Footblaah

No, I don't hate football, I just have a story to tell. We went to Fergus this last weekend to be with my family and help at a Relay for Life fund raising garage sale. They raised a lot and our Lefse helped raise some money too. Peter is happy to go to Bapa Kim and Grandma Cindy's, but he was crabby all weekend. It wasn't all that fun, but we had some good time in the snow. On Sunday we decided to come home a little early so we could go to a Super Bowl party with our small group. Peter was melancholy all the way to the cities (not common for Peter, especially in the car). He refused a banana and a graham cracker (some of his favorites). He didn't even want to eat when we got there. He agreed to go potty with me. I asked him what was wrong and then we prayed for the Lord to help him whether he was just sad or if he felt sick. Then we went downstairs to join the fun. He picked up a sour gummy worm we had brought and tasted it. "Icky," he says. Then two steps later, thankfully not on any food, blaah. He vomited. Now we know why he was crabby and melancholy. The Lord answered our prayer almost immediately. He was perfectly happy after that. Hopefully no one else gets sick.

Back to school

Well, it seems a long time since I actually updated the site. Over a month now. December is normally a busy month, so I have some what of an excuse. Mainly I've been hanging out with Mat and Peter though since Mat had a good five weeks off of school. He went back today. Sounds like he's going to have a light semester, but sounds like he's going to enjoy his courses. I'm excited for him. Peter was a little bummed to see his daddy off to school again, but I think he will be better after a few days of realization.
I've put some new pictures up too. Some from December, some from January and then our Christmas at the Nix home. I'm not sure what happened to our pictures of our time at my parents for Christmas. I'll have to find them on our computer - some funny ones on there. Also, there's a great album of some first time sledders. We had our friend Laxmi from Jaipur, India up to the farm and Sham, Merhawi and Yosief originally from Eritrea (see earlier news piece) were also there. I believe they were all first time sledders and they had a blast. It was a joy to see Sham scream down the hill and Laxmi get a face full of snow (though not as funny at the time). I've got some video, so hound me to get it up if you would like to see it.
Also, I am working on a 2008 in review site of some favorite pictures, so hope to have that up soon.

Thanksgiving

Ok, so I forgot the camera, but Mollie just sent me some pictures of our time at the Dean home Thanksgiving weekend. Actually, most of the pictures are from Friday after Thanksgiving. I had gone to Gerta Okerlund's funeral in Fergus Falls with my Dad and Grandma Carol. Since Peter would have tons more fun with his cousins than sitting in a car, he stayed with Grandma Cindy and my brother Gabe's family. He had a blast. He didn't want to leave. We enjoyed our time talking with the Deans, Aunt Jan and cousin Charlie. We also played in the backyard both days. It was great to spend time with Natalie, Kayla, Benjamin and Megan and get to know them better. Kayla sure can run. They all have such unique personalities. So that was our Thanksgiving. Time well spent.
Now we await the end of Mat's busy semester. He has until next Wednesday, then finals. I will be glad to see him again. He has another all-nighter tonight. I think that's three in the last two weeks. He's gotten about twelve hours of sleep this week. We've had a few hours with him. He really is doing well at meeting deadlines though. I am proud even though we miss him greatly. I look forward to him being home for almost a month with no classes. Yeay.

Last Week

I added a few pictures today. We went to a water park with the Lanhams, Al, Violet and Emma, and Bapa George and Grandma Mena. We had some great family time and the kids loved getting in the water all weekend. Peter loved the big bucket and can't stop talking about it. We keep making block towers with a big bucket at the top now. It was a blessing and I think brought the family closer together.
I also added a few pictures of our month so far. Peter is growing a ton lately, I think his emotional growth spurt is the biggest thing right now. He's happy then sad, then crazy then sweet... He also received a gift from Grandma Cindy and Bapa Kim. There are a few pictures of him playing with the little people nativity. Each year they have expanded his set. He loves playing with them. I think in one of the pictures you might see that he has hid all the animals and people. He is getting quite the imagination.
We don't have any pictures of our time at Trini Riordan's birthday party (I forgot the camera), but that was also a special time this last week. Peter loves to play with Trini and Earah. They are fun girls and he enjoyed going to Underwater World with them.
We look forward to Thanksgiving and the Christmas season to come. We have a new advent calendar this year. I will pull out a verse or two a day from the Old Testament of the prophecies of Jesus' coming. If you would like a list of the verses, I have them in my email, just let me know. Lots of love.

Halloween

Just a note about our Halloween experience. Thursday evening we went trick-or-treating at Bapa George and Mena's. There's a video below of Peter perfecting his roar.
Friday morning we were off to Bapa Dick and Grandma Marilyn's home. Peter got about a pound of candy (which he is so graciously sharing with his mom and dad) a box of triangular crayons and a car which he loves. More than that we were able to spend the whole morning with his great grandparents and had a wonderful time running around behind their backyard. It was wonderful. Please see the posted pictures.
I didn't bring the camera with us that night, but we went to the Mall of America and visited Chipotle for our free burrito (yes we dressed up like a burrito). We also enjoyed going to all the vendors and Peter would roar instead of say trick-or-treat. They all loved it and so did we. Peter didn't want to leave, but a few hours later we finally went home to rest.

Our week.

Just writing a note about our week. Not a whole lot in pictures though because I keep forgetting our camera. Last weekend we went to another pumpkin patch in the Andover area. We spent some time with the Deans (Gabe, Mollie, Natalie, Kayla, Benjamin and Megan) that day and in the morning went on a hay ride, saw some animals, went through a corn maze and just plain ran around. We were able get some good quality time in with the Deans, which I enjoyed immensely. Usually we only gather with them on occasions, so there are other people and plenty of things going on. This was nice because it was mainly just us and them.

Mat has been very busy with school work. He leaves here most days at 7:30am and arrives home around 6:00pm. He's been keeping up for the most part and is still enjoying what he does. Today he had a field trip from 7:30am - 12:30pm. He left here at 6:30am. He really enjoyed it. He and the other students planted 6,000 shrubs and trees. He loved the hard labor. I always enjoy hearing about what he's been up to as well.

Peter and I have been busy as well, but had some good time at home this week. Once a week we go to nursery, I believe I have already written a note about this. When we go on Wednesdays we're in a room full of boys. There are seven in all (including Peter) and five of them are 3 1/2. It's been interesting for me and I think it will be quite the learning experience. We didn't have "school" (ECFE) this week because of break, but went to Loring Park instead. We rarely get there now since we have two other parks we can walk to here. Peter loved running around the whole park, his old stomping grounds, once again. We'll have to get up there more often.

Peter has also been learning a lot lately. He's able to recite more songs and can do most of the abcs when I sing along. He still loves having pretend birthday parties and invites all his stuffed animals. Pretending is one of his favorite things. We are quite into puzzles ever since we visited Joshua Lee, the King of puzzles. He also loves banging on his new drum set that we found on craigslist for $10. I believe I put pictures of that on the site as well as a video.

Last night Mat sold an apartment while I was at the Women's Mission Gathering. I enjoyed my time and was quite amazed by the speaker. I have written a separate note on that. It's missions focus time at Bethlehem now, I think my favorite time of year. When we hear testimonies from those living life and getting dirty in ministry, it's such a real time and encouraging. I've also been trying to be proactive about my time with Peter. We've been focusing on letters lately. Our focus on A included apples, apple crisp, acrobats (including a time for our own acrobatics - I tried to teach him to sommer sault, he's still a little young), and airplanes (since we just came back off a trip from airplanes). We've gone through a bunch of letters so far.

Friday morning we brought Laxmi to the airport. She will be heading to India for a month to visit family, celebrate a holiday, and get her visa stamp. Suleman, her husband will be coming later. They had hoped he would be coming home at the same time as Laxmi, but now there are some issues with his visa that need to be worked out. We hope to see them together again soon. They have not seen each other since April, too long.

Well, I think I've written enough so far. I'm going to do what I told my mom I was going to do now. I'm gonna go plan some meals for the week. This week I'm trying my hand at making Ethiopian food. I hope it turns out well.

A letter I wrote on behalf of the Littles

Hello,
I'm not sure if any of you were at the Missions Meeting last night. It was great. I was so amazed at the courage of Colleen Little, a missionary to Russia with the Navigators. She and her family are currently in the US and have been here about a year. Her husband will be returning to Russia from October 27th - November 7th and she could really use a meal or two during this time or anytime. They have been having a time consuming year working with their twin adopted girls (15 years old) and would be greatly blessed by a few meals.

They are at the South campus and I can get you more information if you'd like. Thanks.

Another note about the Littles, If you feel led, they are in need of help with one of their daughters. She has attachment disorder and is abusive to her parents. It sounds like, from other adoptive mothers who were at the meeting last night, that a specific program would help them. This program deals with attachment disorder through story. It would not only benefit their own daughter and family, but most likely their ministry to Russia as well. They would like to do this, but the program cost is $2000. Ministry costs, health costs, etc, have been building up for them lately, and so they will not likely be able to do this for their family and ministry unless the Lord provides financially. They did not ask for this, but I’m sure it would bless them if we would show them some financial support. If anyone is interested, you can send them support through the navigators (designating it for them of course) or maybe we as a moms group could take up a donation.

Thanks,

Katie Nix

Cambodia Final Report

We heard from OMF today and will not be going to Cambodia. The man who gives medical clearance would like us to wait until next April to apply again. We have already talked about going next summer or possibly even next December if that will not work. Please pray for us that we might have some guidance in this. Thanks.

One more quick note

We still have not heard anything for medical clearance on Cambodia. We are expecting not to go this December due to the time crunch. It is two months away from when we would have left. We will continue to update you all.

North Carolina again

On September 23 and 24 we made last minute plans for Peter and I (Katie) to go to North Carolina again to visit the Petersens. Since we had our free roundtrip tickets it could be done. Baby Caleb's baby shower would be that Saturday and I thought we might be of some help putting meals in the freezer and whatever else. I think I was of some help, though it was hard for Peter to be away from his daddy the discipline giver. We put around six meals in the freezer for the weeks to come or for when baby Caleb arrives and one or two meals in the fridge for the following week. Now we only have to wait about seven weeks to see the little guy.
Joshua and Peter had some good times. I enjoyed seeing them all and meeting many of Veroniques friends at the baby shower. I am glad to be home though. It is not easy living in someone else's home for ten days. We arrived home Saturday night. Peter passed up a playground at the airport because he knew he was going to see his daddy. When he saw him through the clear glass sliding doors, he ran as fast as he could to hug him. I clopped behind with our bags and a car seat only to meet my husband and some beautiful sun flowers waiting for me. Homecomings are super.
It will be nice to see the Petersens again, but next time we're going to bring the whole family and maybe plan it a few days or weeks in advance. That way we might be more of a blessing.

Late Entry on our visit to the Pumpkin Patch

On the weekend of September 22, we went to Fergus Falls to visit family, mainly my mom and dad. They brought us to garage sales and later that day to a pumpkin patch right outside of town near broken down dam. It was great and Peter couldn't stop talking about it, especially the piglet he was able to pick up. He loved his time with Grandma Cindy and Bapa Kim. He loves to run in their big yard and kick a ball around. He also loves playing down in the toy filled basement and finding new things. The spiders had started coming indoors and so he saw plenty and had to look at each one. Mat was able to get a little homework done, though I think being gone two weekends in a row put him behind a bit. I just love being with family. Please look at the pictures we will put up.

Our weekend and my Tuesday at MOMS

We went to the farm this last weekend and as usual had a great time. Next weekend we are going to Fergus Falls to see my parents and grandma and whoever else we see. What a blessed bunch of people we are. We now get four days off a month from our apartment management position which means we can enjoy more time away if we so choose. I don't think we'll be going to the farm and Fergus every month due to gas prices and the fact that we make less than we spend currently, but we sure like to have that option.
Last weekend we were able to see the Melinda, Steven, Nicolas, Caleb, and Rebekah and we saw Al, Violet and Emma. It was great to see the Lanhams garden and just enjoy their family. They're always so exciting. We also saw Emma walking which is so fun. She had a look of proud excited enjoyment the whole time. We also had a good talk with Al and Violet while the kids were sleeping. Thanks to Mom and Dad Nix for hosting and for the excellent food. You can see pictures in our album.
Today I started the year of MOMS group nursery. Peter was my big helper as I did the team leader position in the beginners nursery. Our kids are currently 20 months to 30 months old. It will be fun to watch them grow. I did this last year as well and it was such a great time. I think I'm even more blessed than the moms that actually drop their kids off so they can have their time together. It is lovely. Last year the kids I watched were younger, so I think this year will be a little "crazier", but hopefully the transition will go smoothly and that all the kids will enjoy coming and look forward to their time as well.  Next week Peter and I will be doing nursery for Bible study. Please pray for us if you think of it.
More updates next week. If you haven't noticed, I switched everyone to a weekly notification of site updates. If you would like to have more frequent updates (assuming I put things on here more often sometimes), you can edit your member preferences to daily. If you would not like to receive updates, you can edit your preferences so that you will not see these in your email box. That way you can come to the site when you would like to. Enjoy your week.

Gotta love Grandparents

It's so great to have both sets of parents close by.

Life in General

I just wanted to post on a few things. One being a short note on how life is going here. Two, an update on Cambodia. Three, a few things about the site.

We're doing well and been pretty busy lately. Mostly we've been keeping ourselves busy, which is a nice change of pace and for the most part welcome. Peter is talking a ton now and running all over as usual. He's also mostly potty trained. We're still working on outings and bedtime. We're all very happy. Mat’s back at school and enjoying that a whole lot. I’m enjoying his classes as well (second hand anyway).

About Cambodia, we're still in the process of getting medical clearance. Mat recently sent blood tests and labs for review. The last time we sent to this particular person it took about two weeks, so that's what I'm expecting again. If we are confirmed, all things will roll pretty quick, but we don't know any details now. We'll keep you updated as we find out.

And about this site. I just wanted to let you know you can edit your own profile and adjust how often you receive updates from this site. You can even choose not to get updates at all by email and just look at the site when you choose. You can add your own photos and comments (thanks to those who have). I think you can even add videos. Well, poke around and we'll continue to post when we have time and motivation.

North Carolina

I think about blogging often, but do not want to overload you and do not want to overload my schedule. Today I finally got the pictures on here from back in August when we went to visit Ben and Veronique, our longtime friends from college. We explored their favorite places in North Carolina and then hung out at home with them. We went to the "Marbles Museum", to the beach (don't ask me which one), to Treasuring Christ Church, out to eat a couple times thanks to a wonderful gift from George and Dena Nix, had ice cream at a local shop and lots of other things. If you look at the pictures, you'll see our lovely attempts at making penguin cupcakes thanks to my library loan called Hello Cupcake. Overall we had a great time. I think the best part was all the time we had in our separate cars, guys in one, and girls plus the kids in another. Sounds like Ben and Mat had some great talks. Joshua and Peter absolutely loved each other, though they were often tired with the schedule we kept. My favorite part of them in the back seat was when Monkey started dancing. It was also wonderful hearing them talk so much. Veronique and I also had a great time. We had some great talks and caught up a little on life.
Cool thing is we might be able to go again soon. On the way back we got bumped and received two roundtrip tickets each (Peter too since he's over two). So we each have two trips we can take anywhere Airtran flies. One of those trips will definitely be to North Carolina. Let us know if you have any other great offers or destinations for us! Our time with the Petersens was much needed and so so refreshing. We came back so happy and I think motivated to keep on.

New Pass Time

Yesterday during Peter's bath, he found a new way to entertain himself. He probably did this for 30 - 45 minutes. He was sitting on the side of the tub and all of a sudden, slid down. He used to do this on his belly, but now it's on to the backside. Peter has a new water slide. Mat took over after awhile and then Peter started laying down for awhile after he would slide. What fun. We posted a video below to show off.

Busy Month

It's been quite the busy month. We welcome the change of pace this summer and have enjoyed being on the go.

We are doing well and have been greatly encouraged by our recent trip to North Carolina to see Ben, Veronique and Joshua Lee Petersen. We left last Thursday the 7th and came home Wednesday the 13th. We all really needed that. We went to the marbles museum, the beach, to their lovely church, and just plain hung out. Peter and Joshua enjoyed the moments and were depressed to leave each other. I think we were all greatly refreshed. On the way home we chose to be bumped off the flight and each received two roundtrip tickets to be used within the year and a hotel stay. So now we can do it all over again when baby Caleb comes.

The week before that (July 28 - August 1) I helped at a Backyard Bible Club. It's basically like a vacation Bible school with a neighborhood focus. I helped lead a small group and enjoyed getting back into children's ministry. Many of the kids were from our church, Bethlehem Baptist, but about half were from the neighborhood and, as far as we know, do not go to church often. They all were eager to learn and enjoy our time and the great activities we had planned. It was quite a joy.

I will be posting pictures soon. Some are from the uptown art fair that we went to August 2nd. We enjoyed irish music and a thai program. Peter is a sucker for music and stages. He kept wanting to go on stage.

That's about it for now. Hopefully we'll keep updating with pictures and news from our lives as the year goes on.

Cambodia

Just a quick note to say we started working with OMF again this week to go to Cambodia this December. (July 25)

Update: we are still waiting for medical clearance. Many of the OMF staff are out of the office on retreats, vacation, training, etc. We hope to hear soon. If we receive medical clearance, then we would be able to start planning our trip. (August 16)

Mat's Health Update

Mat had a CT and PET scan on Friday and today we learned that Mat's scans went well. There is no sign of cancer or anything. Also, they reduced the frequency of his tests. He will go in for a CT scan every four months rather than three month and he will only have to do a CT scan as long as everything stays clear. We are very happy for this news! Thanks for all who prayer for us these last months!!

July Happenings

July has been a full month. We found out on June 30 that we have 10 days of vacation to use by August 21. Yippee. So off to the Silverness cabin we went. We did Longville turtle races, played at the beach, enjoyed Bapa Dick and Grandma Marilyn and had lots of great food.
After the cabin we headed to Brainerd and celebrated Emma Nix's first birthday. Peter and his cousins found a frog and lots of fun times, they pushed Emma around in her new automobile and watched as she ate yummy cake. Then to Aitkin to visit his cousins and the farm once more.
We celebrated July 4th by going to Powderhorn Park and watching the fireworks. One picture I've added shows Peter covering his eyes. He didn't like them a whole lot. Laxmi came with us for an evening at the park. We enjoyed music and the playground as well.
We also went to the Como Zoo with the Riordans. Peter got scared of the big gorilla, but not too scared. He also got to ride on the train and the tea cups in their little park since the zoo pass we got from our library offers five free ride tickets.
So many other things to tell, but they will be for another day.

Thanks for the pictures. He is growing so fast.  I'm sure he enjoyed his Halloween.  I only had 5 trick or treaters this year and I got prepared for 35, so I brought the extra candy to work.  It always goes around here:)  Thanks again for sharing  Aunt Pat

Bethlehem, October 27 7:30 a.m.

We are enjoying our stay in the city where Jesus was born.  Yesterday we wroshipped with Palestinian Christians, and today we do our volunteer work projects.  (Working at Bethlehem Bible College, in a Christian Retreat Center and picking olives on grounds (The olives will need to be cured and then crushed into olive oil), working in churches, and with ministries to Palestinians.  We are all in good health and enjoying perfect weather. We leave for Tel-Aviv next Sunday after a time of worship at the garden tomb.

For the 21 of us,

Dr. E

It is great to read that God has put everything together for your future. Prayer really works.  I take 18 students on Oct 17 to France-West Bank/Israel-Jordan & Bahrain in transit, Bangkok, Tokyo, and Hawaii. Pray for us as there a good portion of funding for God  to bring in over the next 5 weeks. It is amazing how God does provide in his time.

Blessings,

Dr E

Hi!  I'm glad to hear you had a nice vacation and got bumped.  Clare gets lots of bumps and free travel, as of yet I haven't.  I am glad you got to do a neighborhood Bible time.  I think it really helps you contect when you see these children in the park with their parents.  I best get back  to work, the computer came back up.  Love Aunt Pat
