Interesting Quotes

Allow Events to Change You: You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you. You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth: the openness to experience events and the willingness to be changed by them.

Bruce Mau, designer  (from ''An Incomplete Manifesto for Growth'')

How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment, we can start now, start slowly changing the world! How lovely that everyone, great and small, can make their contribution toward introducing justice straightaway... And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness!

Anne Frank

Holding tight to only one methodology not only limits what a teacher can do but limits who can be successful.- Kylene Beers

The best teachers I know never feel like they've mastered it, and so they keep trying to figure things out. The beauty of a job like teaching is there are so many opportunities to learn and change.- Kathy Collins

Curriculum should be rooted in children's needs and experiences. Whether we're teaching science, mathematics, English or social studies, ultimately, the class has to be about our student's lives as well as about a particular subject. Students should probe the ways their lives connect to the broader society and are limited by that society.- p.4 Rethinking Our Classrooms (1994), Bigelow, Christensen, Karp, Miner, & Peterson (eds.)

Teachers- not programs- are the critical element in student's success.
- Kylene Beers

Any person who is intellectually alive changes his ideas. If anyone at a university is teaching the same thing they were teaching five years ago, either the field is dead, or they haven't been thinking. - Noam Chomsky

The beginning teacher focuses on his own teaching; the competent teacher focuses on the connections between teaching and learning...; and the advanced teacher is reflective and analytical, inquiring into teaching by deeply considering student learning and helping students to make connections. This continuum moves from isolation to collaboration, from teaching lessons to a coherent program of teaching relationally over time.- Sheridan Blau (former president of NCTE)

It is important to offer a balanced literacy program, as no one component will be able to teach everything necessary for deep comprehension. Each piece complements the other.
