Madlax U13 Orange boys went 4 -3 at the Tri-State Tournament while playing the toughest schedule of any team in the bracket. The team played 5 of the top 6 teams at the tournament in 7 games. The boys played great in all of the seeding round games ending up 3-2 with only two overtime losses against the top seed and the 4th seed at the tournament. In our first game Friday against the #4 seeded Gladiators 7 different players scored in a 7-4 win (Jack Cassidy was the MVP of the game). The second game was a 3-2 OT loss to the 3rd seeded Long Island Express (Korwan) team, Emmet and AJ scored the goals for Madlax in this game. Game three was another defensive battle against #5 seeded Long Island Express (McManus) this time the boys from Madlax won 2-1 after a last second shot hit the left post as time expired. Will Oliver scored and Riley Larson tallied the game winner on an assist from Nick Gallagher on a broken in-bounds play. Game 4 against #1 seeded Team 91 Orange opened up with a flurry of goals and a 3-1 halftime lead for Madlax, but Team 91 inched back during the second half and eventually tied the game at 3. Overtime was again heartbreaking as the top seeded 91 team scored on a shot from the slot to win the game 4-3. John Colucci scored the game’s best goal on a feed from Connor McCulloch. Will Oliver and AJ Nieves also tallied in the game. Shane and Austin Lizama were incredible at the defensive end. Game 5 of the tournament against 13th seeded Team Long Island felt like a much needed break after the grueling schedule on Friday and Saturday morning. Madlax was easily able to win this one as Noah Clemente scored his first Madlax Goal in a 6-1 victory. At the conclusion of the seeding round a couple of OT losses prevented Madlax from gaining the #1 seed and a seventh place draw in the playoffs led to a hard fought 5-4 victory over Tri-State Black where Coleman Bishop scored two key goals in the game, and Shane Corcoran was incredible down the stretch in the goal. That victory was followed by a rematch from the NPYLL season and an eventual 6-0 loss against the Breakers. Even though the team fell short of its goal of bringing home the Tri-State Championship for the Madlax Program, the boys played tough against some of the best competition in the country, and they should be proud of their efforts. Next stop Hershey, Pennsylvania! GO MADLAX!
Madlax U13 Orange boys went 3 -2 at the Madlax Capital Classic Tournament. In the blistering summer heat of the last Saturday of June, not even a state of emergency could keep the Madlax Orange from showing up and showing off both a high powered offense, and some of their best defense of the year in the first two games of the tournament (9-3 over Finish Hard and 7-3 over local competitor Next Level). Shane Corcoran was great in goal and in the clearing game all tournament and Colin Shreves was solid on ball, and excellent off ball with several key slides. The scoring came from all over, but Zach Johnson stood out at the midfield with several hustle plays on both offense and defense, and Nick Gallagher on attack was aggressive on the dodge all weekend long. Saturday ended in a 6-1 loss to the Patriots 8th grade team from New Jersey. The boys played hard and the score was 2-1 at halftime, but the summer sun and the smothering defense of the Patriots took the energy out of the orangemen. Sunday’s 2:00pm game against Leading Edge from New Jersey was essentially a playoff game to make it to the championship game and another shot at the Patriots. Madlax was up to the challenge and prevailed 5-3. Gavin Legg and Jack Cassidy dominated the game at long stick defense in a close defensive battle. Matched up against the Patriots again in the championship game, Madlax played a much stronger game, and with the exception of a few minutes in the 3rd quarter, outplayed the Patriots in the rematch. Jackson Smith, Emmet Kemble and John Collucci won key face-offs and Will Oliver and Riley Larson transitioned the ball very well in the final quarter. Facing an 8-3 deficit in the fourth, the play at the midfield and the loud and positive cheering from the parents inspired a come-back of 3 goals in the game’s final minutes. The final score 6-8. Even in the loss, the boys knew that they had played some great lacrosse, and could hold their heads high. Next stop Princeton New Jersey! GO MADLAX!
Madlax U13 Orange boys went 3 -1 at the Green Turtle Tournament. Off to a slow start against Battlelax in the morning, the boys managed to pull out an 9-8 victory in the waning seconds of the game. Team Captain AJ Nieves led the scoring with 4 goals in the game. In games 2 and 3, Madlax won in dominant fashion against both the Mavericks (10-5 victory) and Fearless (11 – 6 victory). The defense led by Eric Lane and Gavin Legg looked sharp and the offense was bolstered by some incredible play from Austin Stewart and Connor McCulloch. Congrats goes to Jack Peele who scored his first Madlax goal in game 3 against Fearless. A double overtime 8-7 braveheart loss to the Crabs was the only blemish on the record of the young men in orange and blue, but anyone who was in attendance can attest to the incredible effort and intensity that the boys poured into the game. Although it was a disappointing loss for all of us, there were many bright spots in the final game of the day. Madlax dominated the Crabs at the face-off X. Emmet Kemble scored twice on face-off fast breaks immediately after the Crabs scored to squash any momentum they could muster, Emmet also added a 3rd fast break face off goal on a scoring run of our own. Jackson Smith also won several key face-offs in the contest. John Colucci, Timothy Saunders, Austin Stewart and Connor McCulloch all had touches on a flag down possession in the box that lasted about 2 minutes, finally ending in a goal. Coach Maddux’s comment on the play, “that was one of the greatest possessions I have ever seen ”. In 4 minutes of overtime, the Crabs did not possess the ball once in our end of the field. The ride pressure created by our attack (especially Nick Gallagher and Coleman Bishop) and the middies was some of the best I’ve witnessed. I am confident that this was the last one of these…in the next one, WE WILL BEGIN A NEW STREAK OF DOMINANCE over the bushel basket boys that will last the rest of the summer and beyond. GO MADLAX!
Coach Maddux Game 5 Summary vs Arden:
Coach Maddux Game 4 Summary vs Breakers:
Tough loss Sunday. The boys showed a lot of heart and mental toughness coming back from 0-3 early in 1st quarter and really controlled the tempo of the game for 3 quarters! The loss will make us hungrier and better in the long run. We need to win the remaining games to earn a possible home game for the playoffs. Jackson Smith was outstanding on face-offs and Gavin Legg was excellent at LSMid. We controlled the middle of field and team defense was the best effort of of the year in 6v6. Our clearing needs major work. Offense was dynamic and balanced against a very good defense. Connor McCullough finished key fastbreaks off feeds from AJ Nieves to give us a chance to win.
