Born in Fontana California, Joe's illustrious soccer career started at Damien High School in La Verne, California, where he was coached by Al Mistri. In his sophomore year, his high school soccer team reached the CIF finals. Franchino went on to play at Cal State-Fullerton in 1994 and 1995, and was named to Soccer America's All-Freshman team. After his sophomore year, Franchino transferred to the University of Washington, where he played in 1996 and 1997.
In 2007, he made only three brief substitute appearances before suffering an ankle injury and missed the rest of the season.
In 2008, Franchino was acquired from the New England Revolution in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, returning to the LA Galaxy, playing along side David Beckham before retiring at the end of the 2009 season.
