MEMBER's choice Win at www.Pictures2win.com

Just discovered that my action shot of Hassan Sunny was the MEMBER's choice winner for "Your Best Action Shot" competition on 16-Jun-2011.
A plesant surprise for sure...... been pretty "dry" with competition wins recently, really struggling a little to find the time to compete, just a little too many photography projects taking up my time.
You can view the win here SAVE.

MENTORGRAPHY's second on-line Interview

Photoshoot for Naumi Hotel, Singapore

Was commissioned to shoot a small 40 rooms boutique hotel called Naumi. Naumi wants to build up their stock image library through this shoot.

Naumi Hotel, Singapore is located at 41, Seah Steet which is actually very near to the Raffles Hotel. It was the first time doing such a shoot and it was fun. I have not uploaded any shots yet on this site but you can access them through this link to view them in my Flickr site:

Bangkok Photo Highlights on FLICKR

Bangkok is such an enjoyable city, I just did not have enough time to visit more places of interest and to do more street photography. Still I took over 800+ photographs and my final tally was 714 photos.

My FLICKR portfolio (you can see different images from the 2011 Bangkok Highlights album in this site) is larger and has more images. You can access my FLICKR 2011 Bangkok highlights portfolio here:

I will be there from 13th - 16th May with a couple of photographer friends and we intend to really exercise our camera's shutter release to the maximum. So watch out for Photo Of The Days (POTD) from Bangkok.

Published in The New Paper on Sunday - 01st May 2011

Shot of Tampines Rovers celebrating their first goal against Balestier Khalsa was published in the Tampines Rover's 5-0 win article in The New Paper on Sunday. I was fortunate, I was at Jalan Besar stadium to shoot the match just for fun & practice. Andi from FAS marketing approached me and asked me if it was ok to send them my action shots. Well I guess the good deed was repaid.

Red Bull Speed Street along Orchard Road - see new images

Singapore Tourism Board was kind enough to help me get media access to photograph the action in the 2011 Red Bull Speed Street event. An 800m stretch was closed from Ion Orchard all the way to the end of Meritus Mandarin. David Coulthard driving the Red Bull Racing (RBR) running showcar was the main attraction with a fantastic support event were former F1 driver Alex Yoong was driving the Audi R8 LMS sports car. Refer to this link for the images captured.

TIPS on how I captured the FIRE BREATHERS

Capturing them is not as straight forward as it seems (capturing without flash). One has to deal with the movement, the temperature of the fire, how large the fire is, etc. So go to my TIPS page to get some useful tips on shooting these awesome guys. MENTORGRAPHY Interview by Photo Weekly Online

Not the latest news but still an important milestone (at least for me) to be recognized and interviewed by a Canadian Photography website. This interview was published on the website www.photoweeklyonline.com in November 2010.

Another feather in my cap (yes, this is NOT huge , not like I was interviewed by National Geographic....but....) that makes feel honored and thrilled. Why ?.....well I am confident that through my photography I have influenced at least 1 other person in this world. You can read the interview here : http://www.photoweeklyonline.com/an-interview-with-andrew-jk-tan/

Manny Librodo Workshop in Singapore

Had the most wonderful time 02nd & 03rd April 2011 while participating the Manny Librodo Ultimate Photography workshop. I had the opportunity again to photograph the lovely Kharunisia Jazmin and this time wearing fabulous fashion creations by world class fashion designer Rocky Gathercole who is based in Dubai.

We were shooting from 2pm - 5pm and it was such a hot day , yet the group still managed to produced some fantastic creations. I did pretty well with two shots in Manny's "WOW" group and one of those two shots ended up in the Top 15 images of the entire workshop which had more than 30 photographers. You can see some of my shots in the Glamour_Portraiture Set. Enjoy .......

Oh and the next Manny Librodo Workshop in Singapore is in July 2011 for those interested in Manny's style of portrait photography.

Fuji Finepix X100 Digital Compact Camera

I have been using the Fuji Finepix X100 for close to three weeks now and have found it to be an excellent compact camera. Though it comes with a customized fixed 35mm f2.0 lens (35mm equivalent), this camera oozes quality. The Fujinon f2.0 lens is an excellent performer even wide open and is extremely capable when stopped down another 1 to 2 stops.

Most importantly the low light High ISO noise performance is extremely impressive. The customized APS-C (1.5x crop factor) does a stupendous job for night scenes. I have no issues at all shooting at ISO2000 with this little camera (and I am judging the performance to the highest standards.

Check out the Fuji X100 album if you dare.......

POTD Comments

@nobody n, I shot this for a client. Other than converting to B&W, I did not do much else except prob crop. Great observation !!! Honestly I would maybe lighten the shadows slightly......so in the end what I do really depends on the client requirements.

POTD -08 Nov Capture date: 05th Oct 2011 Natural ant antics captured at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. The lighting conditions were not as bright as shown in the shot. If you look at my camera settings, you may be asking why use such a high ISO of 3200 ? Well, firstly I had to shoot hand-held, so I had to use a shutter speed that I could handle, next I knew I wanted an aperture of at least f8.0 to provide me with a reasonable amount of depth of field (DOF). The photograph is now on sale on GETTY Images and has sold pretty well to european customers. Settings: ISO320, 1/80s, f10.0 Lens: Sigma 150mm f2.8 APO Macro Focal length:35mm Camera: Nikon D3

POTD - 09 Oct Capture Date: 24th Oct 2011 The fantastic Shakira in her 1st performance in Singapore. This was her maiden concert at the 2011 Singapore Singtel Grand Prix. What a fantastic performance. I really like the way the Formula 1 grid patterns adds to the background and helps in the composition of this shot by creating a sort of leading line to Shakira, I was shooting from outside the LG fan zone, yeah it was pretty far away but my Nikon D7000/Nikkor 200-400mm did a really good job. POTD - 05Oct Capture date:02nd Oct 2011 The Indian Festival of Lights at Little India , Singapore, This shot was captured with a 0.5s exposure which would normally NOT be the shutter speed I would use to capture night motion trails. However I decided that with the inconsistent traffic movement which was congested, 0.5s to 1 s seemed to be a good shutter speed to experiment with hand-held (arms were resting on a fence). Took multiple shots and this was the best. I liked the combination of sharpness and partial motion trails which creates nice layers and interesting details about the traffic congestion. POTD - 27 Aug Capture date:24th Jan 2011 Must a sports action shot be totally frozen ? Must it be pin sharp ? In most cases the answer would probably be yes, but there are occasions where slow shutter speeds can be used to create motion in an action shot. It has been a while since I have explored the undeveloped areas of Singapore....so I decided to go visit Pulau Ubin and I was definitely not dissapointed. POTD - 29th Jul Capture date: 28 Jul 2011 Capture of Team Captain & founder of Singapore all female Karting Team CTMC2. Here she is driving pactice laps at Kartright Speedways. The lighting at Kartright speedways was pretty poor and due to the nature of the bumpy tracks, photographing these lady karters were not a walk in the park. Selecting the shutter speed to use is of extreme importance, too high a shutter speed to handle the bumpy tracks will not provide a good panning effect, whilst too slow a shutter speed will provide a nice panning effect but will not help in maintaining a sharp enough portion of the composition to help in achoring the image. POTD - 11 May Trust me capturing a goal is very very difficult, so eventhough this shot may not look spectacular, I value it. The action isn't great as all the players are just looking at the ball flying into the net, but being able to capture the moment has become so valuable. This was the 1st goal by Albirex Niigata which opens the floodgates for a 5-0 trashing of Woodlands Wellington.

Yes, a little different and the challenge was for me to shoot this with a fixed short focal length camera, so I am pretty happy with the result. I used f2.0 and it was intentional to have a shallow depth of field(DOF) Hope my viewers like this. Lens used: fixed 35mm f2.0 lens Settings: ISO200, 1/125s, f2.0

The 2011 VANGUARD Select Award by a Flickr group called GGA (Gun Girls Action). Not a serious award in any way , just a fun thing by a very active Flickr group which did a selection on the best images submitted to the group in 2011.
There were some some great images selected and there is this chap with a fantastic photostream of Movie Poster standard images http://www.flickr.com/photos/elevendy/with/5976690585/
, really very very high standard.

So it was nice that one of my invited images (yes I did not intentionally submit) was selected as Best of 2011 by the GGA Panel.

10 Jun 2011 1st place in the "Reflections" competition at www.pictures2win.com Noon lighting is normally NOT the type of lighting that photographers like to shoot their subjects with because of the harsh lighting....but I do like to use noon lighting to when trying accentuate textures in my subjects. This shot of a pelican & it's reflection was captured during the harsh noon lighting. I spot metered on the pelican & underexposed further to capture the details. The shot does have an attractive symmetry to it and pretty cool details but it is a little flat.

These beauties were photographed at the Singapore Zoo.

Lens used was a 300mm f2.8 with a 1.4x TC attached giving me 420mm focal length and an effective aperture of f4. As there little guys were moving fast, I shot hand-held with a shutter speed of 1/125s.

@Kok Weng, Good always good to shoot. One can never practice enough. Also do not forget to practice post processing as it is an integral requirement in digital photography.

@Joseph, yeah the Nikkor 200-400mm is damn SOLID !!!!, it better be because it costs me a BOMB !!!! the autofocus is faster and more accurate than the Sigma but the price is more than 3x the Sigma !!
5/12/2011 5:34:40 AM - 004000796879
how is the lens?solid?
5/6/2011 1:46:21 AM - 003099421330

@joseph, my targeting (focus) point always on the players face.

At Jln. Besar yesterday (05 May), I was using

- standard settings for color (finetuned , increase sharpness & contrast by 1 division)

- White Balance set to Auto but finetuned further to be slightly on the warm side , about 10% warmer.

5/5/2011 5:06:59 PM - 004000796879
i pretty curious where you place your focus pt on the players to get the skin tones correct?
4/17/2011 1:12:04 AM - 003099421330
@joseph, should join at least once and yes , Kharu's face is world class, she does NOT have a "weaker side".

I used the Fuji's panoramic mode and panned the camera from left to right , hand-held. The X100 automatically stitches and produces the final output as seen. I just did my usual post processing on the resultant file...Andrew

Is this a combination of few shots or you moved the camera from left to right and captured this great image?

TIP of the Week - Shooting Tennis

TIP of the Week: Shooting Tennis

TIP of the Week - Shooting Tennis

Tennis is one sport that I especially like to photograph. Is it easy to shoot tennis ?..... well I would say YES relative to the other sports like soccer, badminton, table-tennis and even swimming.......but this does not mean that getting great tennis photos is a walk in the park.

The tennis shots of Thailand's tennis ace Udomchoke was captured while he was playing the semi-finals at the recent 2012 Singapore ATP Challenger.

Following are my tips on capturing tennis action successfully:

- Set you camera autofocus mode to Continuous tracking or the equivalent on your camera.

- To freeze tennis action, set to 1/500s shutter-speed as a minimum. Best to set above 1/800s shutter-speed to be able to freeze the action as the top tennis players have incredibly fast swing speeds. Now of course you have to keep in mind the overall exposure for the shot.

- As in all sports that has a ball in play, in this case a tennis ball try your very best to capture the ball. The nearer the ball is to the racket, the better in my opinion.

- To capture the ball in the image and at the right moment is the most difficult requirement in my opinion. You need the right timing and a little bit of luck. My advice is to start shooting continuously as the ball rises (after the bounce) before the player's racket actually makes contact with the ball.

- Keep the composition tight if possible. Of course this would depend on the swing action and the focal length you are shooting at. For the Udomchoke shots above, I was using a 300mm f2.8 lens. In general to get a tight composition, shooting at 300mm-400mm focal lengths are recommended.

-choosing the appropriate focus point is important to focus & follow the action and getting the desired composition. To do that you also need to decide on the stroke that you are trying to capture (forehand or backhand or.....). For cameras that have very few focus points, would be better to stick to the center focus point and not frame too tightly when shooting the action.

-focus on the player's head / face if possible.

- shoot in continuous mode and at the highest frame rate that your camera allows.

- shoot more and occasionally check if you are getting the results you are aiming for.

Hope the tips above helps.....and have fun shooting.
