Our story...
The story behind Madeleine Fairchild Designs really began, unknowingly, 25 years ago. After moving into a new home, with our first child on the way, and very little money for new furniture, an idea came to mind for our much needed kitchen table. My Dad, who had been retired for many years, kept himself busy by making "special order" wood pieces of furniture for my sister and I. So, when I came to him with my idea for a tile kitchen table and four chairs, he unquestionably got to work and took on the new challenge. He was a man who worked with his hands his entire life. Born just before the depression, his life was shaped by a kind of self-can-do attitude. Within a few months, the table and chairs were finished.
I still use that same kitchen table my Dad built. It served my family for every meal, at every holiday. It was the table where homework was completed and school projects were assembled. It survived the move to four different houses, always remaining the one constant of our family's "home" for 25 years.
So, it is with my Father's great influence, and my background of 10+ years in furniture and design, that this line of tile tables finally came to be. We have worked hard to carry on my Dad's certitude that things be built to last a lifetime. My wish is that our tables carry on that same tradition. To my Dad...
Construction notes...
Each table starts with a 3/4" solid wood base. Tile is applied over a waterproof, anti-crack membrane and additional substrate for exceptional strength and durability. Colored grout fills in the space between and around each tile. Sealer is applied to grout and unglazed tiles to prevent staining. The table top is than edged with a smooth or reeded solid hardwood trim, such as maple or oak.
The tile top can be used with wood legs or an iron base. For some tables, I've selected solid wood legs in maple, alder or oak, to compliment the style dictated by the tile. The hand-made, unique design of each leg is finished with 4-5 coats of a high quality stain. Polyurethane is than applied for added durability. Aprons on tables with wood legs are corner blocked.
I've used iron bases with powder coated finishes as another design option for the tile tops. These bases are hand made by skilled artisans combining age-old blacksmithing techniques with new technology and the finest quality materials. Custom finishes are available.
And, of course, the tile is what makes each table extraordinary. Each tile has a story of it's own. It's durability as a table top...well, let's just say it will last a lifetime!
