Dear Mia,

You say the funniest things! I say it all the time, but really! You make me laugh constantly.
One night during nighttime prayers, you made your Nasty Bear pray to Jesus. Now, I can't remember everything you said, but you said something like:

Dear Jesus, I know my mommy loves me, but I can't be good all the time, but I listen to Mommy when she says the ice cream truck is coming. In Jesus's name, Amen.

It was SO hard not to laugh out loud, but I was good and just said, "Amen" at the end.

You ask me funny questions like, "Are raspberries called raspberries because they have razz in them?" And you are so descriptive. Your feet fell asleep and you said, "I don't want my feet to sparkle."

You like to make up words and you even thought you made up the word "thrice" and you were so disappointed when I told you that it was indeed a real word. You even used it in the correct context!
You're big into pretending. You watched the second Tinkerbell movie and you've been wanting to be the lightning bug. You say, "Buh-tend you're Tinkerbell and buh-tend I'm Blaze." And then I'm supposed to act like Tinkerbell and you're the lightning bug (which basically just consists of you not talking and making little noises like the character in the movie.) Sometimes you say, "Buh-tend you're the teacher and buh-tend I'm the class and buh-tend we're in preschool." Those days are the best because when we're pretending that I'm the teacher you listen to every word I say! hehe.
You want a dog SO bad. I'm afraid that I'll have to be the bearer of bad news and be the one to tell you that we are NOT getting a dog. We do not have room for one. That doesn't stop you from trying to steal other people's dogs. Whenever you see one you go nuts. Sometimes you say things like, "What a cute dog! She wants to come home with me!" That always seems to amuse the dog's REAL owner.
You told us your first joke! You asked, "How do turtles swim with their feet?"
And we asked, "How?"
You answered, "With their legs!"
We looked at you with a puzzled look and you said, "Everybody laugh!"

Okay, so it wasn't funny at all. But at least you understand that a joke has a question and a punchline! We just have to work on your punchlines.
You entertain us to no end. You are bright and beautiful and just so darn funny. You make me laugh all the time.

Dear Mia,

Well, I have probably spanked you more this last month than I have in the past year. You are just pushing your boundaries and trying to find out how far you can push me. (The answer? Not very far.) You are still mostly good, but you just relish in being "just a little bit bad." Yes. Those are in quotes because those are your words.
You exercise your imagination every morning when you play "The Saggy Baggy Elephant (Little Golden Books) Show." Or sometimes it's "The Saggy Baggy Elephant Party." It used to be the Dino Circus, but I don't know what happened with that. Anyway, now you do a little show and you have your Littlest Pet Shop animals as the audience. And instead of playing Dino Families with Eemo, it's Dino School and they run Dino Errands.
You also like to pretend to be a puppy. A puppy named Fluffy. You walk around on all fours. Eemo is usually the owner (sometimes I get to be the owner, too) and I have to ask permission to pet her dog. Or you like to be Lucky the Cat and I'm the owner.
You started in AWANA this month. You seem to be enjoying it and you are doing a fine job of memorizing your verses. You get to spend even MORE time with Grandma since you go all day Wednesday and then she takes you to church in the evening. You are one lucky little girl.
You are a wonderful and smart little girl. I hope you always know how loved you really are.

Dear Mia,

So, the absolutely worst thing happened this month... Now I'm not sure if this is definite or if it's just some weird phase, but... I think you might be done with napping during the day. Oh, I KNOW. It's devastating. Look, you may not need a daytime nap anymore, young lady, BUT I DO. I need you to nap. It's not that I don't love you, but those two hours were kind of keeping me relatively sane. I sort of knew it was coming because your naps were getting shorter. But it's still a bit of a shock.
You like to be oh, so silly... Almost all of the time. If you're asked a question, you like to answer it with the opposite answer. If you're singing a song, you like to sing words at the wrong times or make up words to the songs. The one that makes us laugh the most is when I'm singing "My Bonnie" and you like to sing VERY LOUDLY, "My BUNNY lies over the ocean." And in "Ring Around the Roses" instead of "a pocket full of posies" you like to sing, "a pocket full of CORN!" And if someone asks you to smile, you give them a big frown.

So far in any classes we've done together you do not like to follow directions. AT ALL. I am already worrying about school and how the first parent/teacher conference will be the worst ever!
You like to give us (and get) belly zerberts and make kissy faces. You love to give us kisses all of the time, even when we're not expecting it. You love to give us "Eskimo Kisses" and "Butterfly Kisses" and "give" us gifts before bedtime. "A present and a cake and a Little Red Claw (dinosaur) and a magic star and a leaf and cake and strawberries." And then you say, "And I've got something *special* for you!" And when we ask what it is you reply, "I don't know... You'll see! ... (pause) It's a choo-choo train!!!"

You do this every night. EVERY SINGLE NIGHT you have this little silly routine. You also like to be a baby animal of some sort. Sometimes it's a cat or a dog, sometimes a bee. You tell me that I'm the mama (insert animal here) and that you're the baby (animal) and that you need me to keep you safe and warm.

While you do enjoy going out and having fun outside, you are a homebody. You love to be home or when we're out, you love to come home. You tell me that you feel safe and warm at home. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised since you come from a family of homebodies. :)

You really enjoy your routines. With Daddy, every day you need to play "Dino Circus." Ever since we took you to the circus the first time, you've been obsessed with it. So, the big blue Brontosaurus (Yes, I'm still calling it a Brontosaurus) is your "Circus Master." (Not a Ringmaster; it has to be called the Circus Master.) And you line up ALL of your dinos to watch "The Greatest Show on Earth."

With Eemo you have to play "Dino Families" where you group the dinos by type and then you tell her which one is the mommy, the daddy and the baby.

I have never actively taught you your letters or to count or even your colors, but you seem to pick these things up. The other day you counted to 39. You asked me what came after 29 and I told you 30. And then you just deduced that after 30 came 31, 32, 33, etc. I'm so glad that you're learning these things by yourself because I'm afraid I don't make a very good teacher.

Now you're obsessed with the number 30. Instead of 20 now, you want to say 30. And just now you told me that you're 30 years old. You also love the number 4. You will count things and yell, "FOUR?! YAY! THAT'S THE NUMBER OF THE DAY!" If there's 5, you will count, "1, 2, 3... 5, 4... YAY! THAT'S THE NUMBER OF THE DAY!" Sometimes when people ask you how old you are, you put up four fingers. You just love those two numbers for some reason.

You are completely uninterested in art... or even coloring. But the other day you were very carefully drawing the letter V outside. I thought it was going to be a spaceship or something (the only thing you'll scribble) and you informed me that you were drawing a V.

We went to San Diego's Wild Animal Park and you thoroughly enjoyed your time there. You especially loved the Dino Mountain exhibit. You were ooohing and aaahing over all of the large animatronic dinosaurs there while other kids are crying because they were so big and scary. You were running up to each one and asking me to take your picture with them. It was like how some people treat celebrities. You were just in awe and had the best time. I am going to take you back again before they take the exhibit down in September.

As well as you speak, there are still a few words you don't say properly. For instance, "gruffles" (waffles). We are making absolutely no attempt to correct you and in fact, we call them "gruffles" ourselves. The other day you called jumping jacks "jacking jumps." And you can bet that I won't be correcting you for saying that either. I guess because you've been talking so well for so long that I enjoy the little mistakes and the little things that remind me that you're still only 3 ... even if you did sound like a teenager the other day when you told me, "UGH... WHATEVER."

You are mostly a good girl, as you so often like to remind me. ("I was bad a little bit, but I was good a lot.") You were good for your Eemo when your dad and I went to San Diego for four days. And when it was your Halmuhni and Harabuhji's Anniversary and we let you pick the cake, you wanted the chocolate cake, but you chose the fruit cake because you thought that they would prefer that one. (And you were right!) You are a sweet girl and sometimes even if you're just a little bit TOO silly, I wouldn't change you for anything.

Dear Mia,

You are just growing up so very fast. Whenever I ask you to do something that you don't want to do, you say, "but moooom..." I didn't think I would have to deal with that until you were at least 6 or 7, but here you already, already protesting every little thing.

We just celebrated your 3rd birthday at the "monkey zoo." Your family and friends were there to help you celebrate and you had so much fun. I couldn't believe how mellow you were at your party. I expected you to be crazy and running around, but you mostly just sat and ate and hung out with people. You were friendly and polite. I wasn't sure what happened, but I was glad that you were so very good. :) It's not that you're a bad girl... It's just that when it's the two of us, you behave beautifully. You don't whine, you do what you're told, you're perfectly happy. But for some reason, get an audience around you (even if it's just one other person) and you just have to put on a show. You get completely silly, you don't listen to a word I say... you just have to show off. So I was very glad that you behaved so well at your party.
I did feel bad because Grandma informed me that you told her that when you got to the party, I'd be too busy to even say hello to you. Well, for the record, I'd like everyone to know that while I was quite busy, as soon as I saw you, I gave you a big hug and kiss to greet you. I even picked you up EVEN THOUGH YOUR SHOES WERE DIRTY AND I WAS WEARING WHITE! See? I love you! I'm never too busy for you!

Last month we got you your very own library card. Even though you have thousands of your own books, we figured it couldn't hurt to see what else is out there. You love going to the library. The entire upstairs is dedicated to childrens' books and outside there's a little park to round around in.
Most of the time, the only books you ever seem to want to get are dinosaur books and shark books, but we find other books for you to look at, too.

You did get your first real boo-boo that will probably scar at the library, though. Several weeks back you fell while running around in the gravel and your arm got all scraped up. Well, about 2.5 weeks later, we were back at the library and you fell again. You were doing the same thing and you landed the same way when you fell. It's all better now, but the skin is a different color. Hopefully you won't fall again! We decided that you were only allowed to wear long sleeves when we go to the library.
Most of the time you are very humble and when your grandma tells you that you're such a cute girl, you insist, "No! I'm just a girl!" Or when she tells you that you've got pretty eyes, you tell her, "No! They're just eyes!" But sometimes I will tell you that you're lovely or beautiful and you reply back matter-of-factly, "Yes, I am." That always makes me laugh and you just look at me with an expression on your face that seems to say to me, "What? I am."
On your birthday, Auntie Jeanette emailed me this:

Three years ago today you were in labor with Mia.
I wonder if you knew how much you'd love her today... or in how many ways she has changed your life for the better. :)

I didn't reply back to her about it then, but I'll reply here.

Three years ago, I was in labor with you.
I knew I'd love you, but I never ever knew how much love I'd be capable of. Every day I love you more. And you brighten our days with your infectious laugh and silly ways. You are our shining star and I love every moment we share.

Dear Mia,

This month was pretty big for you! You went on your first vacation! We took a week long cruise to Mexico and you had the best time. You're still asking me when we can go on vacation and ride the big boat again! You got a great opportunity to bond with your harabuhji and halmuhni.
You have been obsessed with genders lately (without the curiosity about body parts, thankfully). You are constantly asking me what all of your family members are.

You ask me, "Is Daddy a man?"
"Yes, Mia. Daddy's a man."
"What are you, Mama?"
"I'm a woman."
"What am I?"
"You're a girl."

Your obsession led you to say something super funny to me. One day I said, "You're so grown up!" And you replied, completely serious, "Yes, I'm a woman."

You still love animals and bugs. One day we were going on a walk and you saw some ants. You bent down and said, "Hi, ant!" to each of them and then you reassured them, "Don't worry! I won't squash you!" And you proceeded to step around them all.

Another time we went on a walk, you pointed and yelled, "AH! MONSTERS!" at people walking toward us. Oops. I tried to get you to stop before they got in hearing distance of us, but I was unsuccessful. I foresee some rather embarrassing moments in our future.

Especially after our cruise, you have been loving sea creatures. Sometimes you insist on being called "little fishie." And after I've called you "little fishie" you respond with a "glub, glub!"

You are so very silly and we enjoy you every single day. :)

Dear Mia,
You are so funny whenever you see a camera. You say, "smiiiile" and crinkle up that tiny nose. Your face is all scrunched up, but it's so funny that I just humor you and take the picture anyway.
Speaking of noses, you keep pointing to my nose and telling me that I have a tiiiiiiiiiiny little nose, but that you have a big nose. You also love to give me Eskimo Kisses. And then you tell me you want to give me Butterfly Kisses, too. But you always give me an Eskimo Kiss on my face. You give everyone else real Butterfly Kisses, but you like to hear me laugh and say, "That's not a Butterfly Kiss! That's an Eskimo Kiss on my face!"
You love to sing all.the.time. You make up melodies and words and you can sing for long periods of time. You sing to your dinos, your stuffed animals, your toys... It never ends. You especially love to sing at bedtime to your animals.
So... I think I may have forgotten to mention this, but... you're potty trained! There were times when it was kind of hard, but I guess looking back, it really wasn't. Well, relatively speaking, anyway. One day you just decided that it was time for big girl undies and that was that.

You are just growing up too fast. Sometimes I just wish you'd stop.

Dear Mia,

Oh, I have been slacking with the monthly updates! And so much has been going on, especially with the holidays! Last month, you got to spend lots of time with Charlie and Little Jimmy and you had the best time with them. You especially liked running around inside Uncle John's home with them screaming about monsters and such.
It's funny when you have actual conversations with your friends, real or imaginary. You are such a little chatterbox, not only in person, but over the phone, too. Your favorite person to call is Grandma (of course!) and you almost always start your conversation asking where her cat is. You string your sentences together with the word "because." And you make some very long and complex sentences with that word. It doesn't always make sense, but you are trying. :)
I love when you tell me that something is "interesting" or when you respond to us with an emphatic, "indeed!" For some reason, those two words always make me chuckle. Another funny thing that makes me laugh is when you're declining something that's been offered to you and you reply, "No, but thank you, though!" I don't know why, but it just tickles my funny bone.
You also make up words. And use funny little voices. Sometimes you'll fake-cry and want me to tell you not to cry in this weird high-pitched voice (that, for the record, I've never used before). One time instead of using the high-pitched voice, I used a low voice and that made you laugh so hard. Now it's a running joke between us. You also use that low voice for random other phrases such as: "That fish has a mustache" (catfish) or "Look at his eyes! He's trying to look at me!" (anything you think is cute that you believe is looking at you. hehe.)
You get obsessed with books. For a while, it was One Snowy Night. Then it was the "Bear" books by Karma Wilson and also, the David Kirk Little/Biddle books, which you actually have memorized. You enjoy "reading" them back to us at night for your bedtime story. The Miffy Library you got for Christmas is pretty high up on the list as is your current favorite series: The Octonauts. You love books so much. It's no wonder with all the books that we have here!
I told eemo that I was going to make some C-A-K-E and you said, "I want some, too!" I asked you incredulously, "Oh, yeah? What do you think I'm making? What do you think you want?" And you replied back to me, oh, so matter-of-factly, "cake." You took me by surprise with that one word answer. :)
You love to drag your little plastic pantry toys out to make "picnics" and have "snacktime" with Daddy. Every day the two of you sit down and eat the fruit and veggies you've brought out to share. You also like to make "birthday cakes" out of nesting boxes. Sometimes you ask me to sprinkle "honey" on top of them.

You have such an amazing imagination. You make up new words every day like "fa fa." I have NO idea what that means but I hope that when you're older you'll be able to tell me what you're saying.
You had a wonderful time during the holidays. Daddy took us to see Handel's Messiah (you didn't want to sit still inside, but outside, you enjoyed the music through the television screens that were projecting the live performance). We also took the train down to San Juan Capistrano to the petting zoo. And the big Christmas gifts you got! You love your big dino that you can ride and the kitchen set at Grandma's and your Halmuhni and Harabuhji got you a real digital piano! That's not including all of the other gifts you got. You are certainly loved.

But I hope that you know that even without the gifts, we love you immensely. And that we couldn't have asked for a better gift than you.

Dear Mia,
You are so much fun! You say funny things like, "I sure do like candy!" And you say sweet things like, "Don't be sad, Mommy." Or, "I'm so proud of you, Mommy!" And there are the demands, "Mommy. You come here and bring me water!"
You talk so much and you say the longest complex sentences. The talking never ceases... except to sing. You also like to sing EVERYTHING that you're doing. So, for example, if you're taking a bath, you'll sing this to an unknown melody: I'm taking a baaaaaath and the toy will go theeeeere... and come baaaaack. And then Mommy and Daddy will come take it ooooout. And I'm swiiiiiiming in the oceannnnnn.
You love to talk on the phone. You have different, specific things you say to each person. But at the end of the conversation, regardless of who you're speaking to, you always run away and yell, "Good Night! I love you! Byyyye!"
Unrelated to the phone, you do this quirky thing where you'll say a phrase and then expect one of us to repeat what you've said. I'm not sure if it's your way of making sure we're listening and paying attention or if it just tickles you that you can make us repeat everything you say.
Most of the time, you're walking up the stairs unassisted now... I mean, without even the railing. I get so scared that you might trip and then tumble down the stairs, but so far, nothing bad's happened. *Knock on wood.* You're getting faster and faster when you're running around.
You are so silly and you love to play and laugh. You're always quick to give someone a smile and your heart is so big, it makes mine feel full.

 Dear Mia,

The other thing you are always telling us is that you need to do things "all by myself." You get upset if I do anything for you. It seems that you're growing up to be quite an independent girl.

You love dinos. You played with your toy dinosaurs for about 6 hours one day. We took you to see Walking with Dinosaurs and whenever there weren't any dinosaurs on stage you yelled, "DINOSOH'S!" Only two and already heckling people. Oh, I'm so proud. Your favorite is the triceratops ("ceratucks") and when you saw the ankylosaurus you yelled out, "That's one fat dinosoh!" You have such a funny personality.

Dear Mia,

I think I forgot to mention this last month, but you love to sing now. And you make up your own melodies and lyrics. Your favorite lyric seems to be, "and I don't know what to dooooo." I have NO idea where you got that from, but that pops up in about 90% of your songs.

Your 25-month birthday was this past Sunday. Your dad and I were in San Diego and you spent 3 full nights at Grandma's. According to Grandma you did very well there, even if you did miss us. And I know that you DID miss us because after we got you home, for a full 24 hours, you were proclaiming your love for us. You haven't told me that you love me in so long, but you have been telling me over and over again. Not only that, but every time your father and I left the room you'd come running after us telling us that you were going to miss us.

Apparently, I need to leave you more often. hehe.

The Terrible Twos are in full effect. You are beginning to assert yourself... well, you always have, but it's getting more frequent. And it's actually less assertion and more screaming-bloody-murder-for-about-ten-seconds. Just so you know, ten seconds go by REALLY slowly when you're a spectator. But after those 10 seconds are over, you are normal again.


Sometimes you like to sit down and put on a sulky face and tell me, "I am upset!" And when I ask you why you reply, "I am so sad!" You never tell me WHY you're upset, but you are very quick to inform me that you are upset and sad. Those moods pass very quickly, too.


Mostly, though, you are happy and silly and playful and fun. You love to run away from us. It's like a game with you. Trying to catch you before bathtime, or after bathtime, or anytime, really, can be difficult. But you have so much fun that I end up laughing, too. Even when we're in a hurry.

I still haven't started the potty training yet. The more I procrastinate, the more afraid I become. And now I'm freaking myself out even more because you just weaned yourself off of Nasty Bear. At Grandma's you didn't need him at all and since you've been home, you haven't asked for him OR Pooby (Pooh Bear). You used to not be able to get yourself to sleep until you had Nasty Bear and Pooby. The big things have been so easy on us that I feel like IT'S TIME. There must be ONE THING that is difficult. And I feel like it's going to be the potty training. I think we'll start with the training next month. It's all so intimidating to me. But Grandma keeps telling me to think positive. So, I will try to do that.

I debated about whether to continue doing these monthly letters. You are, after all, a big girl now. But I can't help but think maybe when you're older, you will enjoy reading them. And I really hope you do. I hope when you read these letters you will know exactly how much I love you. When you're silly and happy and sad and mad and bad... but especially when you're good. hehe.
