I recently had the distinct honor, along with five other Miss NC 2009 candidates, of being chosen to be on the North Carolina Azalea Queen’s Court! We all had an experience of a lifetime! The week was a whirlwind and we were met with excitement every minute of the day. All of us became extremely close during the week and our friendships will last forever.
I would like to thank The NC Azalea Festival Committee and Mr. and Mrs. Bell for taking such good care of us all week! Also, I fell in LOVE with Salon Beyond Basics and Day Spa of for all the pampering, hair and make-up for the week. We were all certainly treated like “” the entire week! I would also like to thank my escort, Mr. Daniel Fitzgerald, Senior Summerall Guard from the Citadel. He and all the escorts were superb gentlemen all week. Having the Citadel Cadets involved had special meaning to our family, as my maternal grandfather is a Citadel graduate. He had a blast giving all the cadets a hard time, and they loved hearing some Citadel yarns from the fifties. We all learned that times had certainly changed!
I do hope you enjoy the photographs! They say a picture is worth a thousand words…however in this case, it is so difficult to really capture the true essence of being a part of the NC Azalea Festival. I still have not come off of my cloud!!

Since the Summerall Guards were created in 1932, they have proudly represented The Citadel at all major events throughout the nation. Composed of sixty-one members of the First Class, the Summerall Guards represent the ultimate achievement in the military phase of cadet life. Selection for membership in the Guards is rigorous and only those who demonstrate the highest military standards are chosen. The intricate maneuvers performed by the Guards, the Citadel series, is completed without any verbal commands, and many hours of practice are required to achieve the peak of perfection. Our escorts performed at last year's Festival and have just turned over the job to the rising seniors. Their presentation at Airle was their first public performance and the parade thier second. I found them captivating as they marched and performed thier I found them captivating as they marched and performed their maneuvers so gracefully yet with such a strong presence.

I would like to thank Mrs. Connie & Mr. Keith at Isabella Grape of Wilmington for providing the Queen’s Court with the lovely pink beaded gowns we wore in the 2009 Azalea Festival Parade. I will certainly be using this dress at Miss North Carolina!
She and Keith are so gracious and caring. Each time I have visited their store I have been given the “Queen’s” treatment! I highly recommend Isabella Grape to anyone looking for pageant, prom or special occasion apparel. Please patronize the businesses that support the Miss NC Pageant, they are such an important part of its success.
Thanks for your generosity Mrs. Connie and Mr. Keith, and God Bless.

Mrs. Harley Vance, then president of the Cape Fear Garden Club, introduced the tradition of the Azalea Belles participating in the North Carolina Azalea Festival Garden Tour in 1969. Seven young ladies, five of whom were daughters of club members, wore hoop-skirted antebellum dresses that year as their costumes for the Confederate Ball.
Since then, the Belles have grown from that original seven, with over a 100 young women serving as ambassadors for the City of during the Azalea Festival in 2005. They have come to symbolize the Festival season as much as the flowers they represent.
The Azalea Belles enhance the beauty of several activities during the Festival, but their primary duty is to act as hostesses in the gardens featured on the Festival Garden Tour.
Azalea Belles must be sponsored by a member of the Cape Fear Garden Club or the Azalea Belle Committee. Priority is given to daughters and granddaughters of the Cape Fear Garden Club, followed by high school seniors, juniors, and sophomores. A lottery drawing is conducted if there are more belle applications than spaces. The number of spaces varies from year to year, based on the sizes of the gardens. Priority is also given to girls who reside in or attend school in .
