After 18 years of partnering together, the Miss America Organization and Children's Miracle Network have decided to create a national platform for titleholders. The Miss America Organization and Children's Miracle Network will share in a commitment to raise awareness and funds for Children's Miracle Network hospitals across the country as well as the Miss America Scholarship Program. This partnership will create the following opportunities for future contestants and Miss America titleholders:
Children's Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals across North America. Each year the 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals provide the finest medical care, life-saving research and preventative education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries of every kind.
REMEMBER: Monies raised will remain in NC to serve and help OUR CMN hospitals!
Stories like CJ's are just like so many of the children I have had the honor of meeting. Talk to just one child or a parent of a CMN patient and you will feel so grateful CMN is there. Speak briefly or just observe the staff, nurses and doctors and you will know immediately why they are a part of this wonderful organization! It is my prayer that no one I know or love will ever have to be admitted to a CMN hospital; however, knowing CMN is there for all of us, if needed, gives me great peace. One visit and I was hooked on each face, smile and the great courage of these kids and thier families.
People say "two platforms...that's too much to ask." I say, first of all many of the CMN children are there for heart and cardiovascular related problems. Secondly, meet one CMN child, and there is NO question that Miss America, CMN and the four points of the crown go hand in hand. Service, to me, is the most important point on the crown I am so honored to wear! Giving back in some small way to a very large cause is what the Miss America Program is all about! Just think what our world would be like if everyone gave of their time, talents or teasures to a cause like CMN!
On a visit about 18 months ago, I walked into a hospital room to meet a beautiful 9 year old that was undergoing intense chemotherapy. A wisp of beautiful blonde hair was all that remained right at the top of her head. I walked in with a smile, all the while holding back tears as she reached for my long curls falling past my shoulders; telling me I had beautiful hair. It was not long before her tiny fingers reached for my shiny crown. I said a silent prayer of thanksgiving, not only for my new little friend, but for my health and the health of my family and friends. With everything this lovely little one was going through, her bravery was so strong that it lit up the room. She took the autograph I signed with her full name and special message "just between us girls" and held it close to her chest and asked if I would come back one day and see her. Then she told me that I was so beautiful....as I held back more tears, I held her fragile little body in my arms and hugged her as tightly as I could, and I whispered in her ear..."sweetheart, YOU are the beautiful one." I learned that day that beauty inside is the best kind of beauty.
If everyone could meet just one of these wonderful CMN children, they would be hooked for life...I know that I am, Crown or no crown, a CMN volunteer for life!
Jeff Burton, NASCAR driver, CMN volunteer, said it best: "It's all about being a small part of something that is the RIGHT thing to do."
Ok...may I have your name and address PLEASE!
and...the wonderful Director of Music at my Church, Greenwood Forest Baptist!

Heart Failure
The Green Bay Packer’s “Best Fan” has seen his favorite team play the Bears, toured the Packer facilities, and even has a Get Well card from Brett Favre. But Tim and Linda Pfannenstiel of Nebraska nearly lost this fan, their otherwise healthy 7-year-old son, in 2008 when a virus attacked his heart and caused complete heart failure.
TJ had been experiencing flu-like symptoms for a few days, but when TJ started complaining that his “heart hurt” in the Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, an EKG, X-ray and echocardiogram confirmed the worst. TJ experienced complete heart failure in the Pediatric ICU and was immediately placed on an ECMO machine.
Thanks to the highly skilled staff and specialized equipment at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, TJ was able to avoid having heart surgery by having a less invasive heart catheterization procedure. TJ bravely fought for his life and after five days was taken off the ECMO machine, and within 10 days was up and walking the halls of the hospital with a walker.
Although this athlete missed all of his soccer team’s games, TJ received a special trophy at the end of the season for being the “strongest and bravest player” on the team.
