Another great week! The children have been working hard to earn the surprises inside our balloons. They've earned a popcorn party, sidewalk chalk at recess, and a craft day so far. Monday will be their craft day. Your child is welcome to bring an art activity from home, coloring books, watercolors, etc. (Please don't send anything too messy.) We will also have some craft activities here for your child. Just a few minutes of art as a reward for good behavior!!!
We also enjoyed our High Touch High Tech field trip this week. The students got to see some live insects such as a millipede, tarantula, scorpion, and a hissing cockroach. They even got to pet the millipede. They loved it! It was a great way to end our insect/arachnid unit.
This week's wonder question topic is plants. Have a great weekend!
What a great week we've had! We are finishing up our animals study and will move on to learn about plants after a few more days on insects. We are also moving on from How To stories and will begin writing All About stories next week. The children are enjoying being "Tiny Teachers" during this unit of writing. This week's wonder question topic: Arachnids.
Next week, upper grades will be taking the CRCT. Please note this will mean a schedule change for us. Our lunch will be at a new time and we will be eating in the classroom.
On Monday, we are beginning something special for the last days of kindergarten. Such a bittersweet time of year!!! We are going to blow up balloons (one balloon for each day of school left in the year) and hang them in the front of the classroom. Inside each ballon, there will be a special surprise/activity. Examples include Bubble Day, Ice Cream Sundae Day, Board Game Day, etc. At the end of each day, we will choose a balloon to pop and find out what we will be doing the next day. Please be on the lookout for emails during this time...we may need your help with a few activities! For example, students are allowed to bring their favorite board game to school on Board Game day. Thank you in advance for your help! The children are very excited!!!
This week we have been learning about living and non-living things. We went on a discovery walk around the school to observe living/non-living things in the world around us. We explored reptiles and amphibians through books, videos, and the internet. We even had a few visitors in our classroom this week (lizards, water lizards, and even tadpoles)! We are working to create a discovery board in our hallway of various animal groups (reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and mammals). Next week, we will explore birds. This week's wonder question topic is oviparous animals (animals that hatch from eggs).
Next week, we will have an oviparous egg hunt on Thursday at 2 pm. You are welcome to join us if you would like. Thank you to everyone who sent in egg cartons and eggs!
We will take our spring individual pictures and class picture on Wednesday the 28th of next week. We have a morning picture time in case you want to send a change of clothes.
Have a wonderful weekend!!!
It feels great to be back to our normal schedule! The children's community projects were amazing! The children created their own little town on Monday morning on long sheets of butcher paper. They included roads, parks, schools, churches, hospitals, etc. and then added their own businesses to the town. I will post pictures soon! If your child's project is too big for the bus, please stop by when you can to pick it up. Thank you!
Next week, we are going to begin a unit on animals. We will start by learning about reptiles. Please have your child's wonder question be based on reptiles.
I hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing weekend!!!
Be sure to check out the wonder page for our latest video. :)
We've had a VERY busy week!!! Community was a success!!! Thank you so much for all of the help and support from our wonderful families. Tina and I are so thankful for you all and feel so blessed this year. We couldn't have made it through this week without you all!
We enjoyed some more visits by Mr. Nicol, Mr. Hogan, and Mrs. Lowrie. Thank you for visiting and sharing your jobs with us. We celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday today and enjoyed a special guest reading and snack by Mrs. Lackey and Mrs. Sampers.
Next week, we will be learning about American Symbols. This week's wonder question is based on this topic. Please remember your child's Community project is due on Monday.
I hope to see everyone at the carnival tonight!!!
Hi everyone! We've had a great week! We have begun February with a mission: to show an act of kindness to someone each day. Each day, we will pick an act of kindness out of a jar (each act will be written on a heart) and we will all try to show that act of kindness that day. Examples are: give someone a hug, ask your mom or dad if there is anything they need help with, write a note to someone, tell your mom or dad thank you, etc. The children are very excited about this!
Conferences are quickly approaching! Conferences are February 27th and 28th. This is a Monday and a Tuesday. Please send me your top 3 choices of a day and time. If you are not able to meet on these two days, I am also available to meet on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday morning. I could also meet the week prior to this if you prefer. I'm open! Please see the attachment for available times. Thank you!
Kindergarten Community is coming! Please open the Community attachments for more information about this wonderful learning opportunity for the children. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have volunteered your time or contributed to Kindergarten Community already. Thank you to the wonderful team of moms we have organizing all of this! Tina and I appreciate all of our parents so much. Your support this year has been overwhelming. We are so thankful for you!

This week we began a unit on space. We will continue to learn about objects in the day and night sky such as the sun, moon, stars, planets, etc. We celebrated the 100th day of school yesterday in many ways. Our favorite activity was making self-portraits of ourselves at 100 years old. The students also used their imaginations to turn the numerals in the number 100 into a picture. We enjoyed a 100s day snack, made 100s day masks and hats. We attended a school bus safety puppet show and enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Hunnicutt (my mom). :)
Next week we will continue our unit on space and come to the end of our small moments writing unit. This week's wonder question is also about space. Check out our wonder work page to see what we've learned so far!
Sci/Tech 2012 is February 2nd. This exciting night begins at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria with the amazing science magician, Arthur Atsma. Over twenty scientists from the greater Atlanta area will be visiting our school for hands on workshops and investigations. You can expect to hear from astronomers, archeologists, doctors and more! Doors open at 5:30 for your child to choose 2 events he/she wants to see and get one "mystery" ticket for a special presentation. See you there!
This week we completed an inquiry unit on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We learned about his life and beliefs through stories, videos, and websites. After learning about Martin's dreams and vision for our country, the students thought of ways they could help our country. The students came up with their own dream for our country and wrote/illustrated about it in their own dream-shaped paper. Today, we made a discovery board displaying everything we've learned about his life, dreams, and beliefs. We've displayed our information about his life on a life-size cutout of Martin that the children illustrated and our information about his beliefs in a dream bubble. It is hanging in our hallway. :)
In math, we worked on number words to 10, writing numbers to 20, and graphing. In reading, we are working on sight word recognition and identifying capitalization and punctuation in stories. We also had a visit from a wonderful children's author named Carmen Deedy. In writing, we are coming to the end of our small moments unit. We are working on having a beginning, middle, and end. We are also working on using describing words in our stories.
Next week, we will celebrate the 100th Day of School on Thursday! Please remember to send 100th Day projects in by Thursday. We will also begin a unit on the day and night sky. This week's wonder question is about Space.
*Please note that the deadline to buy your tickets for Bingo Night has been extended until Monday! Remember, tickets will not be sold at the door.
Here is a list of all of the skills we will be working on this nine weeks. Your child will be assessed on these skills at the end of the nine weeks. Please work on these skills at home. I have also added the attachment to the section called "Helpful Hints for Kindergarten" in case you need it in the future. Thanks so much!
Happy New Years everyone! We had a great first week back! In writing, we are continuing on with our small moments unit. In reading, we are continuing to work on making connections, exploring pictionaries and dictionaries, and reading sight words (especially our number words and color words). In math, we are working on many skills. We are working on number words to 10, recognizing and writing numbers to 20, counting to 75, and identifying seasons. We kicked off our inquiry studies with a unit on winter. Next week, we will begin an inquiry unit on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
This week's wonder question is about Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There is a wonder homework sheet under "Helpful Hints for Kindergarten" if you would like to use it as a recording sheet.
More info about wonder questions: Your child needs to decide on a question they would like to research about Martin Luther King Jr. or Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They will look for the answer to their question in a book, in a magazine, on the computer, or by asking an "expert". When they discover the answer to their question, they need to write the question and answer on a piece of paper or the wonder homework sheet. They may also provide an illustration if they would like. Please have your child practice reading their question and answer so that they can share what they discovered with the class. These are due on Thursday.
This week we began to learn how children around the world celebrate the holiday season. We learned that some children celebrate Hannukah. We will continue to learn about other cultures around the world throughout the next two weeks. The final week before winter break, we will use a "passport" to travel to other countries (other kindergarten classrooms) to learn more. We will visit Mexico, England, Australia, Italy, Germany, and China. This week's wonder question is about Holidays Around the World.
We previewed Holiday Lane this week. Please remember that our shopping day is Tuesday if you would like your child to shop.
Next week will also be our in-school field trip. High Touch High Tech will be teaching us about "Fabulous Forces".
Please remember the pattern ornaments are due by Monday and wonder questions are due on Thursday.
Have a wonderful, restful weekend!!!
This was a great week! We finished up our Veteran's Day unit today. Chase's dad came in who has served in the Navy for 7 years. Each child had the opportunity to ask him a wonder question. It was so neat to meet a soldier in person and hear about his experiences. Thank you Mr. Coy for coming in! We look forward to interviewing Alek's dad next week (who serves in the army). Be sure to check out the interview on our pictures and videos page. (Sorry for the rough start. I was having some technical issues. :) )
We continue to write small moment stories in writing workshop. We are using booklets now and are learning how to write a beginning, middle, and end. We are also learning how to stretch one tiny moment across several pages by writing more details.
We have moved on to fair shares in math. This week we learned how to share a set of objects fairly between 2-3 people. We are also continuing our work on number words to 10. Please continue to practice these number words at home.
Next week we will begin our Thanksgiving unit. We will be learning about the very first Thanksgiving. Please remember our feast is on Thursday at 11:30 in the kindergarten hallway. Your child will need to wear their costume (Pilgrim or Indian) to the feast that day. Wonder Question this week is on the first Thanksgiving. Be sure to check out our wonderful fall discoveries on our Wonder Page. Have a great weekend!
On November 17th, kindergarten will participate in a Thanksgiving Feast. We will be learning how the first Thanksgiving was celebrated. As a homework assignment, your child will need to research what kind of clothing a Pilgrim or Indian may have worn to the first Thanksgiving feast. Please help your child create a costume reflecting what they have learned. Your child may wear his or her costume to the feast on the 17th. The feast is scheduled for 11:30 and will be located in the kindergarten hallway. Hope to see you there!! (Please see attachment for more info.)
Here is a wonder homework recording sheet if you would like to use it. You don't have to use it! We've had some very creative wonder homework come in and I love it! This is only if you want it. :)
(I have also added it to the section called Helpful Hints for Kindergarten so that you may find it quickly in the future.)
We had a great week! In writing, we are working on small moment stories (true moments from our lives). We are continuing to work on stretching out words, fingerspacing, and using lowercase letters in our writing. In math, we are working on number words to 20 and recognition and value of the nickel. In reading, we are continuing to meet in our guided reading groups and we are also working on the concept of real versus imaginary stories. We had a visit from the tooth fairy, celebrated Red Ribbon Week with many various activities, and had a visit from the cafeteria to teach us about hand washing.
Next week, we will begin a unit on Veteran's Day. So...please have your child's wonder question be about that! We had some fabulous wonder questions this week! Keep up the good work! We are enjoying learning from each other. :)
Don't forget Monday is Fall Dress Up Day! Please see previous note for specific details...
The Publix at Mulberry Village is hosting a Halloween Celebration on Saturday, October 29th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dress up your kids and join them for an evening of fun including chili tasting, music with a D.J., games, face painting, balloon art, trick or treating and more.
Thank you to everyone for your flexibility this week! Testing is over which means our schedule will be back to normal next week. Volunteers may return to your normal times and lunch is at 12:45 again. This week we have been working on numbers 11-20 and reviewing measurement. We have been learning about the life of a pumpkin and nocturnal animals. We are writing small moment stories in writing (true stories from our lives).
Please look for the section on the home page called Links. There is a link called 2nd nine weeks skills. These are the skills your child needs to master by the end of the second nine weeks. Please work on the skills at home with your child. Thank you!

This week, we have been learning about the Five Senses. We loved hearing everyone's wonder questions. It was so neat to see the children become "tiny teachers" and teach the class about the five senses. We continued to study positional words, number words, patterns, and numbers 0-10. We are hard at work on our sight words and on stretching out words. In writing, we worked on pattern books that have a surprise ending.
Next week, we will continue to learn about the five senses. We will also be doing many apple activities. Please have your child bring an apple to school with them next week. We will need them for sorting, graphing, and tasting!
Wonder Homework for this week: Please have your child wonder something about apples. Remember, these need to be kindergarten answers. Your child needs to be able to read their question and tell us their answer. They may write their question on a piece of paper and draw or write their answer. Have a wonderful weekend!!!

In math, we are working on patterns, postional words, and number words. In literacy, we began guided reading groups and worked on family activities. In writing, we have been working on making pattern books (ex. I can read, I can jump, I can swim...). Your child is bringing home their poetry journal today. Please read the poems with your child and return the folder on Monday. It's very important that you return the folder by Monday so that your child can have it for literacy centers and reading workshop. We add a new poem each week. :)
We have been hard at work on shapes, patterns, and positional words. We have been learning all about each other, our friends, and families. We learned about Labor Day and the jobs that people have. The children learned that they have a job too-to learn, listen to your teachers, etc.
We began literacy centers this week. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers for helping out! If you signed up to volunteer in the classroom, you may start coming this week. Please see the volunteer schedule under the volunteer tab for your day and time.
We will begin guided reading groups next week. Please remember your child needs to read their book 2 times and return it the very next day. We will also send Poetry Journals home each Friday starting next week. Please read the poems with your child and return to school every Monday.
Have a fabulous Labor Day weekend!!!
We are working on the picture collages for the children's writing journals. Thank you to everyone who has already sent their pictures in.
