My first try to India: By Tudy Miccolis - 2003

Sunday, October 5, I embarked on a journey unlike any that I have ever taken.  My husband, of course, has taken numerous trips to , over the years, and I have heard, and known of the many wonderful ways in which God is pouring out His love to people who so hunger for Him.  However, this was my opportunity to see first hand the people of , the schools, the churches, the heart of an amazing country.

The journey was long and tiring, but the great company of the team made it happily interesting, as we talked about what lay ahead.  I had had the privilege of getting to know four wonderful ladies, as we met and prayed in the months of preparation for the trip.  Our hearts had already bonded in the hope that God would use us for His glory.  My friends Vera Surey, Rosemarie Quail, Karen Stowell, and LeFeuvre each brought unique gifts and blessings to the trip.

There are so many things which strike you as you enter a land that is so different and so far from what we call home.  As I think back, I remember arriving in and not being met by the person scheduled to escort us through customs.  As women, we gathered to pray right there and then, and the Lord really answered our prayer.  All our suitcases went right through without any difficulty.  Later, we learned that the man who should have met us, had just lost his daughter.  She died shortly after giving birth to a beautiful baby girl.  This was an immediate and tragic example of the vast gap in medical care and resources between home and .

As we continued our journey, there were many more striking and memorable experiences.  Arriving at our first overnight lodging, we saw people wading through the streets, knee deep in dirty water because the monsoon season had just passed. What a sight!  We retired early, and the next day, prepared for a visit at the blind school.  On our way there, we stopped to pick up eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, and whatever food we could buy.  For the first time, I laid eyes on this impressive school that I had heard so much about.  It was so moving to see so many beautiful little ones whose eyes were dimmed although their voices sparkled and their smiles danced with excitement. We had the privilege of sharing a meal together, and then a rally in the auditorium.  It was beautiful.  They sang for us. We sang for them, each sharing our heartfelt gifts with one another.  What a joy to put a stuffed toy, some candies, and a new pair of shoes into their hands.  I still remember how special their reaction was as they would take the toy, rub it into their hands, stroke it against their face, and then bury it into their necks… Rarely have I seen such appreciation for a new toy!

It is nearly impossible to put in words the numerous experiences and impressions you carry from a trip like this.  I can wholeheartedly say that God truly blessed our time in , and we saw His love and compassion for these who are so dear to His heart.  I was deeply impacted by the fervency of the believers in the churches who fasted and prayed in preparation for our meetings. Over and over again, people surrendered their lives to God as they understood the miracle of His great love for the first time.  I believe God poured out His Spirit in answer to their hunger and thirst for Him.  I am so thankful for the opportunity to go, and I know that I speak for all of the ladies on the team when I say that we received far more love than what we gave!
