Bull fights, cock fights and eating guinea pig is the way Peruvians celebrate anniversaries.  Sunday was the 39th Anniversary of a local community.  All day there were food stalls selling cow hearts, guinea pig, barbecued ribs.  There were cooking contest, dog shows, bull fights and chicken fighting!  The finale was a huge concert of typical Peruvian music.!  It was a great time.

These are just a couple of photos I took at the market.  These girls were SO cute.  They were using what they could find to play with in the street.  The girl in the orange hat was 'hammin' it up and didn't want me to quit taking pictures.  The smile on her face says it all!

These latest photos were taken in the local market.  I did very little post processing on these photos.  I'm still experimenting with my camera so the tint of some may seem unusual.  However, I still like the way they turned out.  The fun part was getting the shots developed and giving them away.  It was like Christmas.  They were so happy and appreciative.  These people have very little money and I'm certain there are minimal photos in their homes.  The ones of the children were most appreciated.

Here are some photos I took at the Santa Catalina Monastery in Arequipa, Peru.  A wikipedia description follows...The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is a cloisters convent located in Arequipa, Peru. It was built in 1580.  There are approximately 20 nuns currently living in the northern corner of the complex; the rest of the monastery is open to the public.  The tradition of the time indicated that the second son or daughter of a family would enter religious service, and the convent accepted only women from high-class Spanish families. The convent once housed approximately 450 people (about a third of them nuns and the rest servants) in a cloistered community. It was opened to the public in 1970, when the nuns opened their doors to tourism to pay for the installation of electricity and running water, as required by law.

Well, I have my new Nikon D80 and I've been reading and shooting and am trying to understand the machine.  It's really forcing me to learn which is exactly what I wanted.  I'm frustrated but I know I'll be better for it once I get a handle on things.  I'm optimistic!

Duenos are the owners of the bulls. They stood in the middle for about an hour drinking beer together.

I saw your comment on Andy & Jenni & Celia's blog.  Thank you so much for making contact.  And we appreciate prayers from Peru!

 

Tim and I are living in Columbus now.  We saw Bruce this fall at our OSU tailgate.  I think he was with Paul MacKenzie, but now I can't remember clearly.  I hope your family is well.
