Ice Skating

Today, Daniel asked if we could go skating. I immediately thought of the Jones Center over in Springdale. You used to have to make reservations to skate. I called, and found out it was first come, first served. Not that it mattered, there were the three of us, and two skaters who could actually skate, on the ice.
On the way, Dan asked where we were headed... as we were not going the direction he expected. I told him, the Jones Center to go ice skating. He was incredulous. "Ice skating? I was asking about that roller skating rink we saw with Chris when I asked about going skating!" But both boys were more than thrilled with ice skating. (It was cheaper too, $2.00 per person!)
I haven't been skating since right after Chris was born... sometime in early 1980. This time, I strapped on my plastic skates... stepped onto the ice... and fell flat on my back... most of my (considerable) weight landing on my elbow. It still makes me nauseous to the touch, but I don't think it is broken. Fat 49 year old women probably should not try ice skating without more padding.
The boys fell several times, but none too seriously. I plodded around the rink four times during the first 20 minutes... then abandoned my skates to take pictures. Sam is in the striped shirt, Dan is the gray. Before we left, Dan was actually doing spins. ("NOT ON PURPOSE", he says.) He was quite graceful for a first time skater. I wish I has been a more capable photographer!

Grandma's Perspective: Kimber's Birth

The time at my daughter, Becky's house was mostly quiet and relaxing. We went to town three times- once combined a visit to her midwife's office, a trip to the Abilene Zoo, and shopping. Another time, we hit antique shops and a flea market. Mostly, we were at Becky's house trying to get the place knocked into shape for baby's arrival. Like me, she lives in a place too small for all the "stuff" she has. We were trying to make room for baby items and just CLEAN. It is hard to keep things clean out there. They live 3 miles from a paved road- dust is everywhere. Or, in the week I was there, thick, sticky mud. It dries in rock hard clumps. The clumps break to powder... and disperse over every surface.

Becky had several times we were 'sure' she was in labor. Contractions every 10, or 6, minutes for hours on end. Only to stop cold and be without a twinge for the next couple of days. The 19th was a day of contractions 6 minutes apart. They actually went on most of the night, into the wee hours of the 20th.

But that morning, Becky wasn't having so much as a tiny contraction. Stephen (My son in law) offered to have someone else go get the load of sheep and goats he had committed to haul, but said once he had them loaded into his trailer, he HAD TO take them. As there were no contractions whatsoever, Becky told him to go on. She laid down for a nap, Stephen left, and I went next door to Nola's house (Becky's MIL) to use her computer. I visited about 45 minutes, then headed back to Becky's, in case Ty (my 27 month old grandson) woke from his nap before Becky did.

As I went through their gate, their dog set up a ruckus. I tried to go quietly into the house, but Dog was having none of that. Ty was crying as I walked in, and Becky was just coming up the hall to check on Ty. She soothed him, and I asked if she was having contractions yet. She said yes, she had had THREE since she saw me coming in the gate... less than 5 minutes before.

I started timing. The contractions had started at 2:50 pm, and were coming every two minutes. That was from start of one to start of the next... discounting the duration of each contraction. After about 20 minutes of timing, I told Becky I was calling Carol, the midwife. She lives 90 miles away, and with CTX 2 minutes apart, I figured she needed a heads up!

With Carol and Nola notified, Becky wanted to get as much last minute stuff done as possible. There were birth supplies gathered, but had to be laid out and prepped. We got the kitchen cleaned and the floors swept and vacuumed. Once we had done all we could, Becky wanted to walk. We began traipsing the property. Carol called and let us know she was to the county road, so we headed the 3/4 mile to the inner gate, on foot.

CTX were "rolling" by then, one just finishing when the next began, but Becky could talk through them. Becky opted to walk back, rather than ride, after we met Carol at the gate. By the time we got to the house, Carol was set up, and checked Becky. She was 80% effaced and dilated to 3. The CTX were still every 2 minutes. Carol guesstimated Baby would arrive between 3 and 5 am the next morning. Since birth wasn't imminent, Carol left to check another patient who is due on the 30th, living some 15 miles from Becky.

Becky tried to relax. CTX kept getting stronger and stronger. About dark, she was having trouble talking through them and getting antsy. She was fretting about the labor pains taking all night, as it had with Tyrel. I tried calling Carol, but our cells were both out of tower range. We could get a bit of a word here and there, but no real communication. She finally borrowed a land line and I asked her to please come back to Becky sooner, rather than later.

On Carol's return, Becky was to 5cm. That was some discouraging to Becky. Nola and Carol and I tried to keep her distracted, but every other minute, Becky stood up, walked to the hallway, and leaned out each CTX, swaying and gently moaning. At 11:00 PM, she was near tears, still worried about hours and hours of pain ahead of her. Carol checked her, and she was at an 8cm. Becky said it had taken 2 hours for the previous 2 cm, so maybe the last 2 would only take 2 hours. Nola, Carol, and I looked at each other- none wanting to make false promises, but all of us sure the last 2cm would take less than ONE hour, probably a LOT less.

About 15 past 11:00, Becky's contractions were so intense that her mild moans morphed into a song, it seemed. It was so incredibly beautiful, like wind in the treetops, or like angels singing her through each contraction. It gave us goosebumps to hear her. After five or six of those contractions, her breath became "pushy" and we could hear Becky struggling NOT to push with the contraction. Carol let her do three of those contractions, then told her she was probably ready to push, if she wanted.

During labor, Becky had decided she didn't want the huge "audience" of her three little sister in laws, but at this point, she told Nola they could come watch the baby be born. Nola called next door for the girls to come over. Meanwhile, Becky had continued to have the "pushy" contractions, but not yet begun to push with them, as we were busy getting set up to catch the baby.

The girls (17, 12, and 9) arrived and were given minor tasks, like setting up a mirror, tearing paper towels from a roll, standing by with a camera. Just then, Bill and Glynna (my son and his wife) arrived outside. They had asked if Becky minded if they came down from Oklahoma to visit for their anniversary (the 21st), and see baby, if born, or just hang out if baby hadn't arrived.

Becky wasn't even in labor when she agreed, but had talked to them enroute, so they knew she was in labor. They did NOT know she was to "PUSH"! when they drove up. I sent one of the girls out to tell Glynna she could come in, if she was quiet.

Poor Glynna. She thought she was just invited back to visit the laboring Mom. She comes bursting and bustling into the room, loudly declaring hello's and her arrival and such, and is met with six loud versions of SHHH! Shush! Quiet! She backed out, half offended and starting to declare she had been INVITED... and was shushed again... before she finally realized Becky was pushing the baby out!

Once she began pushing, it was about four pushes before the bag of water began bulging out. Unlike her mother, Becky makes very tough bags of water. Carol turned briefly to find a clamp to break the water bag, when it tore open on its own. With the water, we could see long black hair streaming out... baby had hair a good two inches long! Another push, and baby was born.

Carol passed baby up to Becky, who immediately and none too gently flipped over the wet little thing to check on the "plumbing".

"It's a GIRL! I got my Kimber!" Becky cried.

That was at 11:48 pm.
I got my birthday grandbaby, but just barely.

Becky called Stephen immediately and let him know it was a girl. He was due home at about 4:30 am, but pushed hard and made it home by 3:30. Before we laid down to sleep, I had had Becky call Stephen again- I knew he needed to hear how "well" Becky sounded. He said it really relieved him to hear the strength in her voice.

It was so awesome.
