We've had quite the eventful 2009, full of lots of good times, as well as sad times. We have definitely not been bored!
Taylor and Brooke started the year playing Upwards basketball. It was Brooke's second year and Taylor's first. Brooke loves basketball, and Taylor really enjoyed her first year. Also, they both continued to participate in Awanas and church choir, and in the Fall Taylor joined "the Bridge", the pre-teen class for 5th-6th graders. It's hard to believe our little girl is almost a teenager! How time flies! Also, Taylor and Brooke both continued in gymnastics, and Taylor took guitar lessons.
For school, both Brooke and Taylor were home-schooled by Dana for the 2008-2009 school year. It was a productive and exciting year for them, and hard work for Dana! This year, Taylor returned to public school, starting 5th grade at Rogers Middle School. She has adjusted nicely back and is doing very well. Her favorite subject is English, and she is also participating in the before school fitness club twice a week! Dana has continued to home-school Brooke (and Evan!). She has joined up with some friends in the neighborhood to form a home-school group, teaching Texas history and also with the kids working through a rigorous writing education program. Brooke is also learning a lot and doing very well, and helping out with Evan.
Evan started a mother's day out program twice a week, and loves his "big school." He is also learning his letters and numbers, and learning how to draw and write the alphabet in his "home school" time. He loves golf, and Diego, and has really gotten into "Wii" this year. He also participates in his church choir, and loves his buddies at church and in our neighborhood.
We've done lots of fun things as a family this year as well. We've gone to San Antonio and Seaworld twice, and to Gulf Shores AL for a week in July, with a stop-off in New Orleans for the afternoon. We've gone to Rodeo, and to NASA Space Center a few times. In June, Taylor and Brooke went away for a week of camp at Pine Cove Campground in Columbus, OH. It was their first "summer camp" experience, and they are excited to go back again this year.
Jeff and Dana also had some nice times together this year. In June, Dana came with me to my conference in Portland, OR. What a beautiful place, and we had a great time! We also celebrated our 15th anniversary this past July! I feel so blessed to have this wonderful woman in my life! It has been a great first 15 years together, and I look forward to our future together!
We enjoyed great times with family and friends as well. In July, we also traveled to Alabama for Nancy and Puddin’s (Dana’s parents) 50th wedding anniversary celebration! It was a nice celebration of their faithfulness and love for each other! We also hosted Jeff’s sister Tina and nephew Carlo for a fun visit, plus Meme and Pop-pop Teddy (Jeff’s mother and stepdad) came for visits, as well. We visited Dana’s Aunt Polly up in Marshall, TX, a few times – she continues to do well. We also hosted Jeff’s college friends Pam and Dave Cassel and their family for a wonderful visit.
We also had some very sad times this year. In late August, Dana’s great aunt Minnie Lee passed away. She was 102 years old, and full of life! We will miss her. In June, we lost our sweet doggie of 13 1/2 years, Prancer. Dana and I got him in early 1996 in only our second year of marriage -- Prancer was our first child, and was a constant part of our family through the years. We loved him and miss him dearly.
After a few months, we got a new puppy, a Havanese. He is part chocolate Havanese, so we named him “Hershey” in honor of the wonderful chocolate factory in Pennsylvania. He is an energetic little guy, and loves to “zoom” around the house and yard. When he is in one of those moods, we will say he is having his “Taz time”, since he looks like the Tasmanian devil of the Bugs Bunny cartoons zipping around like that.
We have had a full year this year, with lots of activities and a lot going on. It is a challenge during these busy days to keep perspective, and keep our lives balanced, but we are thankful for our friends and our church in helping us stay grounded. At church this past fall, we had an “iLife” program where we learned about living intententionally as God intended us to. I think Dana and I both have grown spiritually and learned new insights for our lives through this program. We are thankful for all of the blessings in our lives, and pray that our lives bring glory to God.
We pray the same for you and your family this Holiday Season, and wish you a wonderful 2010!
