What is SASI?

The Student Athlete Summer Institute, also known as SASI, is a leadership camp for student athletes who demonstrate leadership potential and have an average or above average academic record.  Although all regions of SASI share common goals, Mountain SASI is different in that camp is held at Springmaid Mountain Campground rather than a university.  This environment creates for a natural scene of our beautiful region and allows students to feel relaxed.  At camp, coaches conduct sessions teaching students about sportsmanship, leadership within your school and community, alcohol and other drugs awareness, peers empowering peers, and being a positive influence and role model to others.  Students are involved in a variety of team-building activities including a ropes course and ice-breaker activities.  Throughout the upcoming year following camp, students are expected to carry-out "game plans" put together during camp with their coaches for their school, including a community service project.  Students reunite with their fellow camp members at the Golden Corral in Hickory to share the progress of their game plans and discuss upcoming events they may have scheduled.  Graduation is then held for students, their parents, and coaches to receive SASI certificates and share information about their successful year.

Refer to 'Favorite Sites' on the left of this page for the NCHSAA's description of SASI.

2010 Camp Overview

Mountain SASI 2010 was a success for coaches and athletes alike! We had new coaches and new students this year and as always, everyone made friendships to last a lifetime.  Teams began arriving and became aware of the the campground.  As mentioned above, this is how Mountain SASI differs from other regions in the state.  We are at a mountainous campgroud retreat where we get to enjoy a lot of our natural environment.  Executive Director and Coach Linda Pitman then discussed with everyone why they were here and what camp was about.  While coaches and staff met, JCs took new participants out for some ice breaking activities.  We all met back in the bunk house where everyone participated in the ATOD Round Robin games.  We gathered for school team meetings to begin brainstorming ideas for our "game plan" action plans.  Color Teams chose a topic and began brainstorming ideas for their skits to be performed on the last evening of camp.  Towards the end of each day, students met to process the day and discuss what they had learned throughout each session or activity.  Students harnessed in as they began looking at the ropes course they were facing.  Some conquered fears and some learned the essence of teamwork as they completed the towering high course.  After completing both low and high level courses with their color teams, some students mixed to see how fast they could get through the course again.  Some coaches even went through 3 times or more as they thrive in challenge-driven environments and wouldn't dare let their athletes think they were older than they really were.  To wash off all the hard work, students and coaches loaded up with an intertube and began the adventure down a local river.  World known cyclist, Chris Boone, then came to speak to us about reaching goals and that the journey is the beauty of the battle.  We also had another guest speaker who works with the SBI (State Bureau Investigator), Chuck Vines, JR., speak about the devastating effects of drugs and alcohol.  Horseback riding came next as we ventured the beautiful trails of Springmaid on a hot summer day.  Discussions were given individually by coaches about hazing and trash talking, sportsmanship, and leadership.  Color team skits were performed and we wrapped up the last evening of camp around a bonfire discussing what we were going to take back with us to school and in our personal lives.  We signed shirts, shared stories, signed the SASI contract, gave camp evaluations, and finally said our goodbyes until we meet again.  Needless to say, every student, coach, and staff was fortunate in that they learned about one another and came out with a new outlook on how to be an effective leader both on the field and at home.  Memories and friendships will never be forgotten!
