Class news & updates

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

We had a rhyming of a time celebrating Dr. Seuss'  birthday on March 2nd.  We designed our own red and white striped hats, just like Dr. Seuss' hat.  We read many of his books, took Accelerated Reader quizzes, and even made Dr. Seuss hats out of vanilla wafers, icing and gummie life savers!

Build a Bear Workshop

Our trip to Build a Bear Workshop was a fun and informative way to start our Functional Writing Genre.  We learned the steps to make a bear and even took bears home with us.  After we practiced building our own bears, we wrote our very own Functional Writing pieces on How to Build a Bear.

Welcome back to a new year at ARE! We are expecting great things out of our students in 2012!

As we close on 2011 and begin 2012, we are continuing to blast off to college preparation.  It is imperative that your student is at school, every day, on time and prepared to learn.  Continue to read with your student at home as we are striving to read One Million Words for our reading campaign.  Our literacy day was a huge success on December 14th and we hope to keep the reading momentum high.  As always, it is a privilege to teach your student and please feel free to communicate via the student agenda, email, or by phone.  Happy New Year!

Thanksgiving

Our class had a wonderful time during the few days before Thanksgiving.  We began our persuasive writing genre by writing a story "Don't Eat Me".  We pretended we were turkies and persuaded our family not to cook and eat us for a Thanksgiving Feast.  We read books based on Indian tales and completed AR quizzes.  Also, we made a turkey and wrote what we were thankful for on his feathers.  The students will bring home with them the "Turkey Ran Away" song book and "Pilgrim, Pilgrim" story book.  Students were asked to underline the words off of our word wall.  This is an excellent way for the students to study their sight words over the Thanksgiving break.

I hope you have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving and I am thankful for my students and their families!

Diamond D Ranch

We had a wonderful time learning about nature and animals at the Diamond D Ranch.  The students were able to ride ponies, pet a bull and miniature horse, feed the catfish, goat and cows.  The day was topped off with a jump in the bounce house and an outdoor picnic.  The pictures are on the Pictures page of our website!

First Two Weeks of School

What a GREAT first two weeks of First Grade!!!!!  I had an amazing time learning about your students through their All About Me Bag Presentations.

A few things to remember:

1. If transportation changes please send me a note.  It has to be in writing for us to change it. This is for the safety of your students.

2. Tuesday talk goes home every Tuesday.  This houses important information and announcements.  Please send back any important information and the folder Wednesday.

4. Homework goes home every Monday and is due every Friday.

5. Your student brings home a Student Agenda every day.  Please see that it is signed and returned every day.

I look forward to working with all of you this year!  Let me know if you have any questions.  You can reach me at higginss@duvalschools.org or 904-630-6550 ext 2176.

Welcome to First Grade!

The 2011 - 2012 school year will be one filled with critical thinking, hands on experiences, and passion driven learning.  I want each of you to come to school prepared to be a part of a N.O.W classroom!  To make sure that you are prepared for GREAT LEAPS, be sure to keep up with your summer reading.  You can find a link to the Summer Reading List K-2 under the Curriculum tab.

I am looking forward to meeting all parents and students at the Meet and Greet on August 19, 2011 at 9:00 am. Enjoy your summer and make it a BLAST!

Operation N.O.W.

What is Operation N.O.W?  It is a school wide initiative enforced to increase our student's sense of urgency, promote a positive change in attitude, ensure a greater sense of responsibility, and inspire a greater sense of effort.

What does Operation N.O.W stand for?

No OPPORTUNITY Wasted! We want our students to understand that the choices they make right now impact their future.  We are preparing our students for college and setting high expectations inside and outside of the classroom!

More information coming soon.
