Class News and Updates

Only Five Weeks of School Left!

In these last five weeks of school, the seniors are finishing their research papers. The juniors will be taking their EOI tests next week. The writing tests will be on Tuesday, April 23, and on Wednesday, April 24. The reading test will be held on Thursday, April 25.

It's time to begin our junior research paper!

English III students, it's time to start the research paper!  Choose a career that truly interests you, and you will investigate all aspects of this career. I will help you step by step, and I KNOW you can write a great paper!

What a week!

Our student body worked so hard on their homecoming floats and skits this week! It was great to see the camaraderie, and I appreciate all of the parents who came out to help.

Academic Team Tryouts

Tryouts will be held the week of Sep.4-7 for any high school or junior high student who wishes to participate.  First, students will complete a written test.  Then, students will compete using the buzzers as we would in an actual academic team competition.

Welcome back to school!

Welcome back to Cordell High School! What an awesome group of students I have this year!

Only Six Weeks of School Left!

I have such a great senior class! Let's finish the year strong and not let "senioritis" keep us from doing our best these last six weeks of school. We still have more to learn!

We have been working on our career research papers for several weeks now, and the final 5-8 page paper is due Friday, March 9! This is an absolute deadline! No late papers will be accepted.  If you are sick on Friday, you must have someone else bring the paper to the school for you.  You can do it!

January Plans

I am excited about the new year! In senior English, we will be studying British literature written during the Renaissance.  In junior English, we will continue reading the first American short stories. In 8th grade English, we will read the play version of The Diary of Anne Frank

Let's Get Started!

All of my classes have writing assignments due the first week of school.  I can't wait to read my students' papers!

Seniors-Outline, Thesis Statement, and Works Cited Page Due Friday, April 1!

We have been working hard this week on completing our outline, thesis statement, and works cited page in class this week.  However, many students have been absent for baseball, speech, and soccer.  Be sure to keep up with your deadlines! If you need help, just ask.

Junior Research Papers Are Due This Friday, March 11!

Juniors, you have been working hard on your research papers, and I am proud of you.  However, I must remind you that NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED!  All papers are due this Friday, March 11, no later than 3:30 p.m.  If you must be absent that day, have someone hand in your paper for you.

Only three more weeks until the junior class research paper is due!

It's crunch time!  Fifty note cards are due Friday, Feb. 25, with the final paper due Friday, Mar. 11! You can do it!

It's Research Paper Time!

The juniors have begun their career research papers.  The deadlines are posted above. I know you can write a great paper! Meeting the small deadlines is the key to finishing the paper on time.

Accelerated Reader Points Are Due Oct. 20!

Off to a Great Start!

The first two weeks of school have flown by! I have great classes and bright students. Our first literature tests will be held next week.

School Begins on Thursday, August 12!

School begins at 8:25 a.m. sharp on Thursday, August 12! See you there!

English III-Junior English

American Literature

English III focuses on American literature, and the material will be covered chronologically starting with colonial America. We will also work to improve our English language skills:  reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.  Special emphasis is placed on improving students' ACT English scores.  Students will be required to writed a 5-7 research paper during the second semester.  Also, students will prepare to pass the reading and writing sections of the English III EOI test which takes place in April.

English IV-Senior English

British Literature

English IV focuses on British literature and the further development of English language skills:  reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.  Students will be expected to do much writing throughout the year to prepare for college composition classes including a portfolio project during the first semester and a 7-10 page research paper during the second semester.

7th Grade English

Welcome Parents/Guardians and Students! My name is Mrs. Leppke,  and I am excited to be your child’s English teacher this year. I strongly believe that students must be empowered to excel in anything they do. The main goal of the curriculum is to help students develop literacy appreciation and to improve their ability to express themselves through oral and written language. Please keep communication open and feel free to contact me or to visit our classroom. You may e-mail me at aleppke@cordell.k12.ok.us.  You may call me at the school at  (580)832-3420 ext. 217.

Accelerated Reader Requirements

30 Points Per Nine Weeks/Only 15 Points Required for 7th Graders

At the end of each nine weeks, I count AR (Accelerated Reader) points as one test grade. You will need 30 points each nine weeks to earn a test grade of 100A+.  If you read a book worth five points and pass the test, you will earn a grade of 60D. Eighth graders are only required to read 15 points per nine weeks.

Comments

What are Caught 'Ya Sentences?

A sentence or two from an ongoing, funny story will be shown from the overhead projector four times per week.  Each sentence is laced with errors that students must correct.  Each sentence also contains one challenging vocabulary word.  Students are expected to copy the sentence(s) into their notebooks at the beginning of the class period. I will give immediate feedback on their work, helping them to correct the errors. Students will earn a perfect score each week if they complete the sentences with all grammar errors corrected. I have found in my eighteen years of teaching that this is a very effective way to teach grammar and vocabulary!
