Classroom Economy ~ How It All Works

When the students enter the room, they begin to earn classroom cash for performing their job as a student. Just as I earn money to teach (although I do love it, I also get compensated for it), the students earn money for getting to school on time, turning in homework, being on task, and performing classroom jobs. They also earn money for proper behavior (in the form of getting green cards, table points, etc...).

In turn, students will also lose money for being off task or neglecting their student duties.

Classroom Jobs

The main way students earn classroom cash is by performing Classroom Jobs. There are many different jobs in class, all of which are designed to help the class run more smoothly. Below is a listing of all the jobs available, as well as a description of them. Be sure to ask your child which job s/he has this month.

President Classroom monitor, Flag salute leader, cafeteria monitor, attendance monitor, emergency pack, line leader.

Vice President Classroom monitor, President Fill-in, cafeteria monitor, attendance monitor, attendance cards (in emergency), line leader, pass out uniform tickets.

Property Manager Unlocks and holds door open when class is entering/leaving, turns off/on lights, “all clear” in emergency, daily classroom clean-up check, answers phone (if Mrs. Moorman is unavailable)

Controllers Records and returns all behavior cards at the end of the day, distributes Lightning Rod.

Table Captains Collect and turn in papers from table, help pass out HW folders, make sure all table members are on task.

Distributors Distributes HW and other papers to go home at the end of the day, distributes all papers throughout the day.

Equipment Manager Selects ball for recess and lunch

time, responsible for ball during breaks.

Librarians Oversees book check out, cleans and straightens library and books daily.

Justices Maintains order on the yard and cafeteria, tries to solve disputes, write unsolved disputes in the Justice Journal.

Playleaders Helps lower grade class play the games on the yard, shows them how to play, responsible for order in the game (DOES NOT TAKE OVER THE GAME....IS MORE OF A TEACHER)

Bankers Responsible for collecting and distributing all classroom money. Oversees all monetary transactions, makes change, fulfills paychecks, collects fines.

Merchants Sells all items at the General Store. In charge of all replacement items sold during the week, as well as the Friday store opening.

The salaries earned each week for the jobs listed above depend upon the difficulty and responsibilities of the duty itself. Below is a listing of the salaries each job earns.

Each month, the students fill out a "Classroom Job Application" for each job. They must describe their qualifications for the job they are seeking, as well as list the reasons why they would be and excellent candidate for the job.

What Is the Money Used For?

Just as in real life, there are debts to be paid in the classroom. Students must "pay" each month to rent their desk, chair, and pencil box from me. They also pay a text book "fee" at the beginning of the year. When students need new pencils, glue sticks, folders, or any other school supply, they can "purchase" these items using their classroom money.

There are also privileges that may be purchased. Once a week, during Payroll Pay Day, the merchants open "Mrs. Moorman's General Store." In the store are items such as Homework Passes, Bathroom Punchcards, and Computer Use Passes. There are also small treasure chest items that may be purchased as well.

At times, students may be fined for inappropriate behavior. Students who do not turn in their homework, are misbehaving, or are generally off task, must pay. Students who wish to use the bathroom, may pay to do so.
