This "Back to School" Powerpoint was shown to your child the first day of school. It outlined our rules, consequences and procedures for dealing with those consequences. Feel free to look at it again with your child to review our classroom behavior procedures at home! Here are a few slides to preview :)

Our Classroom Rules

On the first day of school, we all discuss the different "rules" that we should follow as students in a 5th grade class. Using a Circle Map, the students brainstorm everything they believe would help to make our class run smoothly. The students inevitably come up with ideas such as:
   No running
   Don't talk back to the teacher
   Turn in your homework

Once all of the rules are given, I show the students the 5 main "umbrella rules" that would cover a majority of the other little ones. Our main rules are:

1. Follow all rules the first time they are given.
2. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking.
3. Keep your work area and floor space clean at all times.
4. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
5. Work quietly, using a 3-inch voice.

The students then work together in groups to take all of the small rules they brainstormed and, in Tree Map format, categorize them under our 5 main rules. This exercise helps the students to see that every rule they can think of falls in some way underneath the main rules that I instituted. It is a way we all can have a part in creating our classroom rules.

Consequence

When a student chooses to ignore the classroom expectations, he or she will be asked to "turn a card". There are five cards, each one varying in degree of consequence.

   Green =   Great Day!
   Yellow = Verbal Warning
   Blue = 20 Minutes Away from Class
   Purple = Phone Call Home and Loss of Recess
   Red =   Principal's Office

A serious offense (physically or verbally assaulting another) calls for immediate referral to the office.

Recording Behavior

When a student "turns a card", he or she will record their infraction on a label located near the behavior cards. On the label, the student will write his or her name, the date, card color, and reason for the card change. At the end of the day, these labels are then placed in my "Behavior Log" and kept for conferences.

For students who have more major, or continued, violations of the classroom rules, there will be an "Incident Report" that they fill out and bring home that day. The report will include what infraction was made, and what better choices can be made in the future. These cards will be sent home at the end of the day to be signed by you, the parent, and returned to me the next day. There is a space for you to request a conference if you wish so that we may discuss the behavior in person as well.

Procedures, Procedures, Procedures!

Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures for eating in the cafeteria, getting off a bus, playing soccer, and attending a movie. The reason we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient ways other people do things.

There are procedures in this classroom. These procedures establish our classroom culture.

To help the students better remember these procedures, I have created a "Procedure Manual", which the student keep in their desk as all times. Periodically, we review this manual, so as to keep the procedures fresh in their minds.

Please discuss with your child all of the procedures we have in class. It will help to keep them on target!
