Mrs. Moorman's Class - Math
Welcome to the Math Section of our website. In this section, you will find links to many of the things we use and are learning during Mathematics Instruction. You will also find pictures of the students' work, as well as explanations of the current standards.
Our Math Block
Math instruction takes place daily from 10:35am - 12:00pm
The block is broken up as follows:
10:35 - 10:45am Calendar Work Time (I pull one small remediation group during this time)
10:45 - 10:55am Homework Review
10:55 - 11:15am Rotation 111:15 - 11:35am Rotation 2
11:35 - 11:40am Lightning Rod
11:40 - 12:00pm Calendar Review
Math Rotations
In order to best meet the needs of the students in my classroom, I have broken up the direct instruction portion of the block into two sections. Using semi-homogeneous groupings, the students are broken into two Rotation groups, Rotation 1 and Rotation 2.
During the first round, Rotation 1 is "rotating" through a menu of math independent tasks. They are as follows:
1. Finish calendar
2. Get Lightning Rod test
3. Do Skill Work (which is usually a practice sheet or problem solving activity related to the lessons that week)
4. Math Choice (this is a choice between a project, game, practice skill, or math fluency practice. They may do any of the choices available, but must stick with it the entire time)
While they are rotating, I am meeting with my first direct instruction group. They learn the lesson for the day.
Once the lesson is over, the two groups switch and the process starts again.
Conducting the math lesson in this manner allows me to have more of a hands-on approach to math as well as be more in tune with the individual needs of my 30 students.

Calendar Boards
I didn't have enough space for a dedicated board this year, so I put the pieces on two poster boards instead!

Lightning Rod
Students drill their multiplication and division facts each day using a program called "Lightning Rod". Starting with the 1s, the students progress through 44 problems at each level of multiplication first (including cumulative reviews after each whole number is passed) and then through the same in division. Students have 2 minutes to pass the test at 100% accuracy. Once they have gone through all the levels, students go back to the beginning, but with only 90 seconds for the second round. The third round (which doesn't happen until much later in the year) had only 75 seconds to pass each test.

These sheets are assigned when a student does not pass his or her Lightning Rod for the day. It is a great motivator for students to study!
