Some 4S students are having a difficult time meeting the READING COUNTS individual reading goal of 10 points a month. (I mentioned this at parent teacher conferences.) Therefore, I am instituting a HOME READING LOG for all students in 4S. It will require students to read an average of 20 minutes a night for five nights a week. This will total 100 points a week and be entered as one weekly reading grade.
This log will be sent home every Friday in the Friday folder. It will require you to initial each 20 minute session. I am hoping this activity will improve fluency and READING COUNTS points.
TO LEARN TO READ, YOU HAVE TO READ.

Check with your child about his/her homework, assignments, or school work. If they say we did nothing in class today, you may want to rephrase the question! Your child should not be spending an excessive amount of time doing school work. 4th graders should have approximately 40 minutes of homework. If your child did not complete the assignments in class, they will probably have homework. Please let me know via a note/email/ or phone contact if your child has problems with an assignment. I will be more than glad to explain the assignment again.
Studying the multiplication facts and spelling words for 10 minutes apiece and reading a Chapter book for a book report/Reading Counts is already 30 minutes.
Each student in 4S has an agenda. On Monday morning, we preview the week and enter important school activities and also test(s) for the week. Everyday, I post on the board, the material we have covered in each class, plus any other work they may need to complete. If this work is completed, we've discussed 'marking' it in the journal to show it is completed. If it isn't maked, then it becomes homework.
We've discussed how important it is to let parents know what we are doing in class. This is how I teach one part of responsibility. I know some of you would like to view my website as a place to get all assignments for the week or so. For me, this is time taken away from teaching/working with the students.
If you feel your child is having problems with the use of the journal, contact me and we will find a way to make it work.
PE is on Wednesday from 9:30-10:15. Students should wear PE shoes Wednesday or leave a pair at school in their cubby. Students will not be able to call home for you to bring PE shoes to school.
MUSIC is on Thursday from 9:30-10:15.
LIBRARY will be every Monday.
COMPUTER LAB is scheduled on Tuesday and Friday for TTL (Type to Learn) and other projects. We also have access to laptops that we will be using in the room. We have four computers in the room for student use at all times.
