My favorite parenting resources

The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander:  From Preschool to High School- How Parents and Teachers can Help Break the Cycle of Violence by Barbara Coloroso (available at the SoCo library)
This book has a great section on looking for warning signs of a child who bullies or is bullied.  She also discusses a concept from another of her books on the three types of families- brick-wall, jellyfish, and backbone.  Coloroso also gives many good suggestions to raise your kids with social awareness.

Emotional Intelligence with Daniel Goleman DVD (available at Parents' Place or buy it at PBS.com)

This lecture style DVD is a really interesting look at how the ways we talk to our children and ask questions help to build emotional and social intelligence.

Screamfree Parenting by Hal Edward Runkel (available at the SoCo library)
A good resource if you are a floppy fish parent to start with, lots of good reminders and lists of things to do with your kids. He also discusses different parenting styles and how to be calm.

Sway:  The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior by Ori Brafman and Rom Brafman
(available at the SoCo library)
Though not a  parenting book at all, there is an excellent chapter "Compensation and Cocaine" about how giving rewards or holding a carrot in front of our kids affects a different area in their brains than doing something for good reasons like altruism.

The Misunderstood Child: Understanding and Coping with Your Child's Learning Disabilities by Larry B. Silver M.D.
(available at the SoCo library)
The primary focus of the book is to explain learning disabilities and what you can do for your child.  Silver explains the process for coping with each type of learning disability, and spends a good amount of space on ADHD in an honest way.

Welcome

Welcome to Mrs. Terrell's classroom site! Here you'll find pictures of the students and information about our class activities. Visit regularly to see what's going on.

This is my sixth year teaching at Maria Carrillo High School and my sixteenth year teaching.  I have taught a range of classes here, from senior survey English to honors 10th grade English to freshmen English.  This is the third year our school is offering an English support class.

A little bit about me...I have been married for 4 years to my husband, Simon, who is also a teacher.  We have two mini doxies at home, and a recent major accomplishment for me is that I finished my Master's of Liberal Arts at Stanford and walked at graduation in June 2009.  I attended classes and wrote my thesis while working full time, but I enjoyed every minute of the challenge!

My husband and I adopted our 5 year old son in November 2009, and I am loving being a new parent!  Our experiences as parents definitely continue to shape who I am as a teacher.

I'm looking forward to a great year!

Findings about reading and engaging with your kids...

While the title is kind of insulting, the article brings up some interesting points about reading with your kids and engaging withe them every day...

Materials and supplies you will need for the school year

a binder for English with tabbed dividers,
spiral bound journals or notebooks,
pens of any color for writing (no pencil),
green pen,
green and pink highlighters,
a water color paint tray and brush,
a blank unlined sketchpad or sketchbook,
an agenda, planner, or calendar of some kind for homework and important dates

Need make-up work?

I post each day's agenda on the calendar tabbed section of the site, so you always know what you missed. See me at advocacy for additional questions. Handouts are in the make-up binder on the counter.

Donations welcome!

With the budget in crisis, we teachers have even less money to buy school supplies for our class rooms and students.  Any help from parents and family is much appreciated.  I can always use:
boxes of tissue, stamp pads of any color, index cards of any type, heavy duty staplers, book cases, books in good shape that a teenager would read, card games or board games that have to do with words, language, etc., used ink cartridges to recycle for office supply credit
