I didn't realize how long it's been since I've posted. My goal for the New Year is to make sure I post weekly! And, to get all these pictures I've been taking up!
Everyone did such an amazing job at the Christmas concert yesterday! I can't wait to hear the songs again next Monday (Dec. 19) when we go visit the nursing homes!
Speaking of nursing homes, I sent home a green letter regarding our trip. I am unsure what nursing home we will be visiting yet. We'll be leaving at 1:45 and getting back at 2:45. Please let me know if you have questions, or would not like your child to participate. The students have been coloring some snowmen and snow women to hang on the doors at the nursing homes. They look terrific!
This week is Ms. Eisen's last week. She's been a student teacher who comes comes on Tuesday and Wednesdays. She's done a great job helping our class with stations, projects, and classwork. We'll miss her! The students wrote her a letter today wishing her good luck and thanking her for her hard work! We will be getting a new student teacher starting in January. Ms. Waranowski is going to do her full take over student teaching in our classroom! I think she'll be a great addition to our classroom. Look for more information on her at a later time.
Today, the students started an in class social studies project on geography and landforms. After they learn about mountains, river/water, desert, and plains communities your child will be working in a group to design a travel agent powerpoint. We may not get time to start this until after break.
I sent home the study guide tonight for the fractions test that your child will have on Thursday. We've been practicing fractions for a few weeks now. Finding equivalent fractions have been kind of tricky for some students, so make sure to fit in some extra practice when you can.
I have to say, I'm super proud of this class lately. They've been doing such a great job on their reading and spelling tests. Overall, our classroom environment has become so much better than at the beginning of the year! Hats off to you 3-5!
One more thing...there will be no spelling list or story next week. We'll be doing some Marzano's vocabulary activities, 12 Powerful words activities, and some reader's theatre.
Have a great rest of your week!
I hope everyone is having a relaxing day off!
It was so nice to meet and talk with most of you during parent teacher conferences this week! If you missed your conference, please give he school a call, or email me so I can find a time that would work with you!
On Monday is our Halloween party from 1:45-2:45! Don't forget that at Eastlawn the students don't wear or bring their costumes :( But, just think, you'll get to wear them that night!
Since I had time the last few nights, I took down our Halloween decorations in our classroom and started hanging up Thanksgiving decorations - can you believe it! Which reminds me that on Wednesday we'll be watching a live webcast on the Activboard on a pilgrim house. This will be like a field trip for the students without leaving the room! How fun! We'll also be watching another one the following week on what a Wampanog Indian village looked like.
We've been busily practicing subtraction in math, including subtracting across the mid-zero. I may be sending some extra practice home with your child if I feel he/she needs it. We're almost done with subtraction, so expect to see a study guide coming home soon for a test. Next up will be multiplication...whooohooo!
You'll also notice that we are practicing geometry in the afternoons. We've been using Twizzlers to practice, so it's been a lot of fun. Your child has learned points, lines, rays, vertex, parallel lines, intersecting lines, perpendicular lines, right angles, obtuse angles, acute angles, and degrees so far!
We finished up a community poster project last week in social studies. Next week we'll be starting life cycles in science, which will be a lot of fun!
Have a great rest of your weekend!
Mrs. Waugh
I hope everyone has had a great weekend!
A couple things to remember for this week:
1. The blood drive is Thursday. If you have any willing donors, please send the information with your child. I believe they still have times open. We're neck and neck with another 3rd grade class for the pizza party. I'd love it if we won!
2. This week is spirit week for homecoming. I'm super excited! Monday is PJ day, Tuesday is crazy hat day, Wednesday is sports shirt day, Thursday is miss match day, and Friday is blue and gold day. I'm ready to take some good pictures of our class this week!
3. Also, don't forget that our school is collecting box tops through October.
4. The money design project is due on Friday. I'm excited to see what these creative students come up with!
I'm pretty impressed with our class. It's taken a few weeks, but I think everyone has our routine down. Everyone is doing a much better job with directions, self control, and following expectations. Way to go 3-5!
I'm ready for another great week. In math we've been practicing addition meanings. These can get kind of tricky, so I'll keep reviewing them with your child. We're going to move on to some addition strategies and rounding this week. In social studies, we are wrapping up maps. I'm going to give them a mini-quiz on Monday on labeling the continents and using a map to find places. We'll be starting science this week too. We'll be working on living things and life cycles. Expect to see some experiments and projects starting in science.
Have a great week!

Hello families!
I hope everyone has had a great weekend. I'm so excited because my one and only sister got engaged over the weekend! Now, I'm ready for wedding planning mode!
I'm ready to start another great week! First things first...don't forget that our school open house is Tuesday night from 6-7. I'll be reminding your child the next two days. I'd love to meet some of you either again or for the first time.
This week my goal is:
1. To finish topic 1 in math. We'll be reviewing counting money and making change. Also, making an organized list. If your child is struggling with money, I'll be sending some extra practice home.
2. Our spelling pre-test will be Monday, and regular test on Friday. We won't be able to use the computer lab for the next 2 weeks due to MAP testing.
3. We've started learning about maps. We'll be studying those this week. The students will have a map project hopefully on Thursday. I'm also requiring that they know how to label the continents, so we'll be practicing those as well.
4. Ms. Eisen (our student teacher/helper) will be teaching a few lessons this week. We can't wait to see what she has in store.
5. We'll also be moving desks, and believe it or not...cleaning them! I can't believe how messy some desks are already!
6. Wednesday, your child will be bringing home "Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday". It's a super cute story that I hope everyone enjoys.
A few reminders...
Remember to read, read, read! Only 15 minutes a night for 5/7 nights a week.
I hope we have a few more blood drive donors. Let me know if you need another form!
Have a great week!

Happy Sunday families!
What a beautiful day this Sunday is! I hope everyone is enjoying their 3 day weekend without the heat!
I hope families are checking this site as much as possible! Please let me know if there is anything you'd like to see added. I have pictures to post...now if I can only get a free minute at school to do it!
Last week was kind of crazy! With the 2 early dismissal days, it left our class with not much time to get things done. We're going to spend some extra time on Tuesday finishing up with work that wasn't finished...wheew!
You and your child will start to notice our schedule falling into place - especially now that the heat is hopefully gone so we'll be at school! I always give your child plenty of time to finish any work that hasn't been done - they have seat work time, time in the morning after finishing their math, and study hall. If your child has not finished the previous days work, I ask him/her to come in at recess to get caught up.
Also, please remind your child to be a good listener and good at following directions. Most of the students are doing a good job with keeping themselves under control when it comes to talking out and any other distractions. Other students are taking this learning process slooowwwllly. But, hopefully they will get on track soon. Your child will hopefully feel that the learning environment in 3-5 is positive and under control.
Next week, remember on Wednesday the story will come home for homework. The spelling pre-test will be Tuesday, and the regular spelling test will be Friday. Remember to pass the pre-test your child has to get all words correct. Friday will be our reading test. Friday will also be our journal writing time. Please take a few minutes to read what your child has written about. They also love to read letters back, so don't forget to write them back.
Have a great week! I'm really enjoying this class, and I can't wait to see what the year brings.
Mrs. Waugh
Welcome back to my students and their families! I'm excited for an awesome year!
Today I sent home the school handbook and some information the office needs filled out. Please do this as soon as possible.
Tomorrow I will be sending home the class handbook with information about our class. Please check that out as well!
I can't wait to spend the year with your child! Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have questions or comments - or if you'd like to see anything added to the site.
Happy 2011 School Year!
